mikhmha··on Heavy marijuana use increases schizophrenia in men, study finds
I really recommend people interested in Schizophrenia to read the book “Hidden Valley Road”. I saw it recommended in a HN comment previously.

The book follows an American family who gave birth to 12 children, 6 of whom were later diagnosed with schizophrenia in their teens.

It’s interesting because the book gives lots of insight into the historical to modern research on the condition. In the past psychologists thought schizophrenia was caused by the environment and/or bad childhood. But most of the research right now is pointing towards a genetic cause.

mikhmha··on Google DeepMind CEO says some form of AGI possible in a few years
What that’s not how it works. You can be dumb and stil survive if you are better adapted to your environment.
mikhmha··on The days are long but the decades are short (2015)
I think feeling it painful to spend when you have lots of money is not a good thing.

I save money by not buying much stuff in general. So when I do have to spend it’s not a big deal. It’s not like saving $80 by not going to a concert would have some profound impact on my future financial situation. Same with vacations or buying clothes. I don’t do that stuff often, so when I do, whatever. Why ruminate so much on it.

I used to be more of your mindset but realized it was stupid. And you end up missing out on opportunities if you’re too frugal just for the sake of it (rather than necessity). People I’ve met on trips, random books I’ve bought, etc have changed my life in lots of positive ways.

mikhmha··on Problems that attract smart people
The failed Kwisatz Haderach.
mikhmha··on Not by AI
Really? I feel like if you have to ask what plugins to build you’re doing it wrong. You should know what plugins to build by being a user of Datasette and understanding its limitations for your self.
mikhmha··on Reddit is currently down
I’ve actually noticed this as well. I’m not sure if it’s all in my head.

All the big sites seem to load slower and there seems to be more tracking/bloat going on in the background. I think they are desperate for revenue and finally pulling out all the stops. I unfortunately can’t give any concrete examples of this.

mikhmha··on On-demand learning comes at the cost of conceptual understanding
I thrive via an "on-demand" learning approach. But to me, I use this approach as a way to immerse myself so I can reach a better conceptual understanding. I don't use tools or new skills without thinking about how they might work under the hood. I also spend lots of time relating the tools and skills I use to other things I've done in the past. Many times this leads me to learn about the abstract concepts that underpin the tools/skills I use - something I would not care about if it was presented to me without context.

Here is an example. I was interested in real-time 3D graphics programming. How did I go about it? I followed the bare minimum tutorials to get OpenGL set up with C++ and then I just wrote code for several months, trying different things. This allowed me to develop my own intuition around linear algebra, geometry, 3D rendering, GPU pipelines, etc. I knew I wasn't doing anything groundbreaking, but what I found was after this experimentation I was able to readily digest and understand the formal approach to the topic. And it was out of my own interest too. I was watching university lectures, reading about mathematical proofs, etc. Something I thought I'd never be able to do. And I found it much more rewarding as I was able to see where my intuitions were correct and lined up with the formal approach, and also where I was very wrong.

mikhmha··on Ask HN: What's a build vs. buy decision that you got wrong?
I work at a enterprise SAAS startup that uses lambda for backend. I agree with a lot of what you say.

But I also disagree with you. Lambda ends up being very cost effective at the place I work at. Its a payment processor so lambdas are only ever run in response to approved transactions. For this sort of SAAS the economics of lambda work very well. I'm not sure what would be better. Of course if I were running a public facing free web service I would not use lambda, but for something where every user is a paying customer? I think Lambda is very cost effective. And if it ever got to the point where moving to k8's would result in a massive cost-savings, I would just pay a guy like you to handle the migration. At that point its probably not a small startup anymore.

mikhmha··on Rackspace Exchange hosting down ~18 hours; “solution” is to start over on O365
Did they mention the cause of the outage?

This exact same thing happened at my Uni. Reason for it was the exchange server was compromised by ransomware. Solution was to abandon it and fast track O365 migration for all users.

mikhmha··on The clever reason scammers can’t spell (2019)
100%. This article is a popular “Reddit” theory I’ve seen float around for a while now and it’s just not true!

I’ve worked IT help desk before and have seen lots of phishing emails. If scammers tightened up their spelling and grammar skills a tiny bit they would catch many more victims effortlessly. The bar is insanely low. Most users could spot obvious phishing emails. But emails with even just a little more effort put into spelling and grammar were insanely successful. I worked at a University - I’ve seen professors, students, admin fall for these ones.

Why can’t they spell? Because most scammers are operating from the developing word and don’t have great English. That’s it. There’s no elaborate theories beyond that.

mikhmha··on The Preppers Were Right All Along
No source. I'm not referring to the act of prepping itself. That's not limited to America lol. I'm referring to the "prepper" culture that is most vocal on the english internet. The american prepper who fantasizes about living in some remote bunker stocked with foods and guns.
mikhmha··on The Preppers Were Right All Along
Coincidentally most preppers are American.
mikhmha··on Why Men Are Hard to Help
Is this a natural thing that occurs in other countries? I honestly don't think so. Cross country idea exchange like this usually happens due to geography - the citizens themselves see what works in other countries by visiting them on trips & vacations and they bring these ideas back. Otherwise you can't force stuff like this, the people will reject it as foreign and alien. Simply watching videos or being told how great things are in other countries isn't enough, you have to go there and actually experience it.

I would argue the current anti-car movement in the U.S is a result of more americans going abroad for vacation to Europe and Asia and seeing what works there and bringing those ideas back. But how easy is it for Americans to go abroad? Most can't.

mikhmha··on When cities treated cars as dangerous intruders
Fewer muggings but more deaths from traffic accidents. What a tradeoff!
mikhmha··on Meta Reports Second Quarter 2022 Results
No I doubt it. Why does everyone forget about the “game” portion of the metaverse? You can’t just build it and expect people to join if the underlying game isnt fun. If it’s just some digital hangout spot then that’s boring sorry - been done before and most people don’t care about virtual chat rooms.

I don’t think FB knows how to make games. They know how to make social media platforms and web technologies but making games is it’s own skillset.

mikhmha··on Dell’s XPS 13 Plus is the first laptop certified for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
Yeah, I had 2019 9570 XPS biggest piece of shit laptop I ever owned. It ran so sluggishly, I tried everything fresh windows install, dell diagnostic, bios update you name it. It made so much noise and would hang up all the time. The wifi card was terrible too.

Later I found out that batch of XPS were prone to failure. They do this “power-saving” thing where they never shut down completely. So for that reason you weren’t supposed to transport them - wtf?? I would carry it in a bag sometimes to university and you would feel it randomly turn on with the fans whirringe. From reading lots of dell support threads, it seemed like dell qc was really hit or miss. So much variation between batches.

Anyways that experience gave me ptsd for high end windows laptops and I got a M1 Air few months ago. It’s been a way better experience so far. It does laptop things really well imo. Nice display(huge!), lightweight, good battery life, great performance for everything except gaming(don’t bother). I press the on button and it instantly picks up from where I left off. That’s huge coming from xps, I would turn that shit on and wait anywhere from 1-10mins, with no guarantees that id be reconnected to the wifi. I even got a high end windows 11 laptop from work that’s more expensive then my M1 and it feels sluggish.

mikhmha··on Inflation Has Outpaced Wage Growth. Now It’s Cutting into Spending
I am finding that prices at restaurants are increasing while quality has been decreasing. It really puts me off from going out to eat. A lot of places I frequent have really dipped in quality. It’s a combination of lower quality ingredients and staff no longer giving a shit (i don’t blame them) + turnover of experienced staff.
mikhmha··on Learning The Elite Class
Aren’t the new elites just the party elites? The ones who are not seen publicly and elect the party leader? It seems to me like they get full reign on economic development projects - which they loot to enrich their families. And once the country goes post-communist these same elites remain in control of the institutions and industries they helped set up.
mikhmha··on The DynamoDB Paper
Yeah we make use of streams at my work. Really useful. You can hook up streams to a Lambda and have it process events and flow them downstream to a Data Lake or Data Warehouse for analytic workloads. What works really well is pushing data to an S3 bucket with object versioning and replication enabled.

I think dynamoDB streams and kinesis streams work similar under the hood? But dynamoDB streams are way cheaper, pricing is on-demand compared to hourly for Kinesis.

mikhmha··on As TikTok grows, so does suspicion
I think TikTok will stay for a while but you are onto something regarding the deception. An issue with TikTok is that the shelf-life of its content-creators is pretty short. Usually they hit it big with 1 video that gets picked up by the algorithm. And then all their subsequent videos are them trying to recapture that lightning. You can keep it going for a bit and develop a decent following but eventually it gets boring.

How do most users interact with TikTok? through the FYP (for you page) which is the algo curated feed that you can endlessly scroll through. From my observations - FYP starts out by showing you content from creators in your geolocation (drains so much battery cuz it loves to use location services). From there it will try to associate you with trending hashtags in content you are more likely engage with. Most important engagement metric is watch-time. So if you complain that your tiktok is full of porn/horny content then you probably have high watch-time in these areas. It will alternate between showing you vids of high user engagement (1M+), medium engagement (<1M) and low engagement (<1K) in the trending hastags/topics it associates with you.

So the content and trends move very fast. Eventually your schtick gets old.

mikhmha··on Don't use Kubernetes yet
yup this is what we do at my work. There is data and then all business logic / asynchronous processing is done using serverless functions. Ends up being really cost effective and it can scale well. All the data exists (and setup with replication) so you can always migrate ur app to some other platform or architecture if need be.

we have CI/CD pipeline that builds and deploys serverless functions using serverless containers.

not a serverless enthusiast btw. microservices have their own set of issues but they can be the right fit for certain apps.

mikhmha··on Major crypto lender Celsius freezes withdrawals as markets tumble
You could just observe the economy of an MMORPG - no blockchain needed.
mikhmha··on Is social audio already dead?
Social audio isn’t dead - I see it becoming a more prominent feature on existing social networks. Never used or heard about Clubhouse when it came out but recently I’ve been using Twitter spaces and I’ve found it to be very valuable. In financial twitter I’ve joined spaces with some great discussion that I can’t seem to find anywhere else. Big part of it is the drop-in drop-out nature of it. So you’ll have analysts from different sectors joining a space to offer their 2cents and ask really great questions. Really all you need to do is @ a blue checkmark and there is a high chance they will join to weigh in.

I can see LinkedIn adding a feature like this in the future - though I think LinkedIn spaces would be terrible (insane amount of self-promotion ugh). Reddit is already testing it.

mikhmha··on Google says iMessage is too powerful
In the U.S and Canada the dominant chat app is facebook messenger.

WhatsApp seems to dominate in Europe and South America.

mikhmha··on “Play-to-Earn” and Bullshit Jobs
I wonder the same. Played MMOs growing up. Got scolded a lot for wasting time on video games.

But I look back now and realize a lot of my foundational knowledge on economics, programming, networking, teamwork, came from MMORPGS. They are social games where you deal with people - and that is a valuable experience.

Unfortunately modern MMO’s are very asocial games and I don’t think much can be learned from them.

mikhmha··on In Praise of Idleness (1932)
I sorta did this from 2020-2021 after I graduated university. Lived at home for a year while learning topics that interested me. It was one of the best things I've ever done and my confidence and outlook on life improved significantly as a result. I was always in "the system" but I never thrived in it. Felt like I was always doing stuff on other peoples time and penalized for deviating from whatever rigid guidelines they dictated. Being able to do stuff for myself and on my own schedule was liberating. Motivation I lacked for most of my life was present because I actually had a personal stake in my learning.

And with that being said, I have no idea how you unschool as an adult without having significant capital. I wanted to unschool for a long-time prior to 2020 but working/doing school 8 hours a day left me with little energy. I was fortunate to be able to live under my parents roof rent-free in 2020 and the COVID relief money I received from the government was enough to let me purchase the resources I needed (lots of books). If I didn't have these benefits I doubt I could do such a thing. I definitely couldn't do such a thing if I still had to work full-time - believe me I tried many times.

Not to mention there is a lot of stigma around doing this as an adult if you don't have capital. I'm young and don't have any dependents so the consequences of potential failure weren't as significant. But if I did? I think that would create a lot more crippling self-doubt throughout the entire process.

mikhmha··on Twitch source code and customer data has reportedly been leaked
Since when did socialism mean you’re not allowed to make money and get rich?
mikhmha··on Ask HN: What cool stuff do you run free-tier?
https://algot.io

I use the free tier for firebase to store real time trade data. The front-end was built using Next.js and hosted using the Vercel free tier.

mikhmha··on My £4 a month server can handle 4.2M requests a day
i tried to do something similar recently. Your architecture sounds a lot like mine. I did all the thread pool management and JSON parsing using C++ libraries/frameworks.

The real-time data was visualized on a website. Here is an example. https://algot.io/
