mikejholly··on Google Is Building a City of the Future – Would Anyone Want to Live There?
Probably the same people who used to wear Google Glass to social events.
mikejholly··on Utah voting system fending off 1B hacking attempts per day
That's surprisingly high! Although I'd assume the total number of people have IDs is greater than the count of those who have bank accounts since there are multiple activities which require IDs (only one being opening a bank account).
mikejholly··on Utah voting system fending off 1B hacking attempts per day
Let me rephrase: the majority of people in my society would _agree_ that requiring an ID card to vote is reasonable. That is true based on an observation of the status quo. Voting is also a right in Canada. In the US, being an imprisoned felon erases your right to vote. Hence, voting is not a God given grant as you claim.

You're also making an ignorant generalization about my background. I was brought up by a single, disabled mother. We lived below the poverty line for the majority of my childhood. You'd do well to discard your arrogant approach.

This argument seems like grasping me to. How would one function in society at all without an ID? Opening a bank account, cashing a check, driving a car, visiting a doctor, taking a train or plane, going to court. These are all activities which require ID. Sure, there is a tiny fraction of people who can't engage in those activities. But how likely is it that those folks are going to be voting, anyhow?

I found this video pretty funny while searching around: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrBxZGWCdgs

You also need to wear clothes and shoes into the polling station. Are those expenses considered poll taxes as well? Straw man, but requiring ID is not really a direct poll tax. I certainly don't feel like I'm being unreasonably taxed when I vote with my ID.

Voting requires ID in almost every other western democracy, including Canada. The rest of the world see it as very reasonable to identify yourself at a polling station. It's odd that this is so contentious in the US.

mikejholly··on Startup books and podcasts: making the most of a longer commute
I really enjoy audiobooks. A great option if you drive.
mikejholly··on A 2:15 Alarm, 2 Trains and a Bus Get Her to Work by 7 A.M
As a 5-year-long remote worker this seems archaic and cruel.
mikejholly··on The Tao of Programming
Enjoyed the cleaned up format!
mikejholly··on Agile is not a Fucking Noun
It seems obvious to me that he's referring to the dichotomy of management (top-down) versus engineering (bottom-up). I think most people understand that businesses are indeed businesses. The point is that some development methodologies commoditize engineering to such a level that engineering is disempowered. This limits potential for innovation. Innovation comes from both ends. For example, as an executive I can "ideate" a search engine faster than Google. How useful is that vision without being source by or informed by engineering innovation? Conversely, some nerd (endearing usage here) builds a new search algorithm and uses solely it to find episodes of Star Trek where Spock chastises Kirk. Not exactly serving shareholders. In a healthy organization, there's a balance between these units where both see the value the other brings.

I agree with your points about the need for managers to also be experienced (and sometimes elite) engineers. Although I'm not sure I would argue that case for Project Managers, specifically.

mikejholly··on Agile is not a Fucking Noun
> Those were not good developers

Nailed it.

mikejholly··on Agile is not a Fucking Noun
Lemme guess, Scrum Master?

Although those faux titles may be technically wrong, the use of capital-A Agile usually implies association with Agile the brand (the noun), not "agile as in agility".

> That is so catastrophically false that I don't even know where to start.

Doesn't sound like a great argument. The highest performing teams I've worked with were small groups of highly skilled, talented (IQ and EQ) and passionate people. These groups are usually familiar with various development methodologies and able to come to agreement on which processes to adopt and which are cargo-culty and should be thrown out. I don't think OP is arguing for zero process. In fact the opposite is clearly stated in the Agile Manifesto list: "They figure out the process that works for them and for the current problem they are working on."

Here's a much better articulated criticism on Agile that I enjoyed:

mikejholly··on Blue Feed, Red Feed
So WSJ specifically crafted feeds with left and right leaning sources to illustrate what exactly? That political differences exist? I don't think Facebook has much influence over the company you keep in meat space. Your real-life circle has far greater influence on your political leanings.

mikejholly··on Rescuing REST from the API Winter
The reports of REST's death are greatly exaggerated.
mikejholly··on Show HN: Cloudcraft – Create AWS diagrams
This is excellent! Well done.

Would be awesome if it supported non-AWS (more generic) resources as well.

mikejholly··on Former Stanford dean explains why helicopter parenting is ruining a generation
"Lythcott-Haims said many parents ask how they can unilaterally deescalate in what feels like a college-admissions arms race. How can they relax about getting their child into Harvard if every other parent is going full speed ahead?"

Uh, I think there are other schools ... and by the way they all use the same textbooks. Maybe the problem is American credentialism?

Companies aren't about religion, they're about creating products people pay for. Fin.
mikejholly··on How to Become a Great JavaScript Developer
This is bad advice. Theory is vastly more important in computer science and math. Given your logic, one will simply practice their way to linear algebra, machine learning or AI. Good luck with that. There's a giant toolbox of shortcuts that seem like magic to the inexperienced. Becoming a great _user of tools_ (programming languages, etc.) is level 1.
mikejholly··on Last Task After Layoff at Disney: Train Foreign Replacements
"...but what does it really have to do with visas or immigrants."

Everything, actually.

“The program has created a highly lucrative business model of bringing in cheaper H-1B workers to substitute for Americans...”

"Because of legal loopholes, however, in practice companies do not have to recruit American workers first or guarantee that Americans will not be displaced."

If such a loophole exists it puts American tech workers in a vulnerable position.

mikejholly··on What you wanted to know about AI
Agreed. As someone who works in AI (and knows its limitations) it's frustrating to see the layperson getting nervous about AI after watching Chappie and hearing some of these quotes from Gates and the like. Human level AI is way way way out.
