mike-selmo··on America Isn’t Ready for the Lanternfly Invasion
This is actually a really interesting question. I imagine the complexity of the model to really accurately predict this would be practically unattainable currently.

You are introducing a new element to an environment without knowing how it would react to it. You could attempt to predict based on predators or food sources from its original environment and compare them to closest matches (if any) to the new environment.

This would make so many wild assumptions though that minor errors could result in cascading effects in a direction the model never predicted.

Doing some googling and found that there is the I = PAT equation which is just for human influence and is based on an extremely simplistic model. I think the nuances and details needed for an accurate ecosystem model would be several orders of magnitude more complex.

A model that could connect events like reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone with stopping erosion and other similar effects would be pretty incredible.

mike-selmo··on Ask HN: What skill should I learn next?
So I would suggest two! Learn backend dev or deep learning using python.

I recently started a new job and we use python for machine learning and our backend systems. It was really easy to pick up, but I had a background in PHP backend. Now I am not in the ML team so I haven't learned too much about it - I will peek at the code and understand it a little but I enjoy the backend written in python.

So I would learn 2 at a time, learn how to develop a backend in python. Then you walk away understanding how backend development works and you can apply other languages you may know to the concepts, as well as understanding python more and you can then apply that to other applications outside of backend.

mike-selmo··on Ask HN: Need an Idea for a simple Java project
So for your first project I would do something simple in concept so you don't get wrapped up in feature creep.

Think about what you have learned so far and how you could demonstrate those topics. I don't think it needs to be a fresh new idea.

3 days is pretty short, without knowing what topics you have covered I would pick 3 and think of a way to combine them.

Say you learned a bit of UI, a bit of sorting, and a bit of OOP. Maybe create a todo list app that sorts tasks by priority.

mike-selmo··on Show HN: Ryeboard- a free virtual whiteboard (open beta)
I knew it was probably user error - since the site looked pretty polished and clean. I don't know why I didn't try dragging...I might still be recovering from the fourth of July.

I like the platform, do you have plans for any other tools? I think a freehand marker option would be really nice and make it more of a virtual "white board".

Looks really interesting!

Doesn't seem to work for me in chrome on my Macbook.

Can get to the board but the tools seem to be unresponsive. (Very possibly user error - but I clicked around for a minute with no luck).
