mikae1··on Tinker WriterDeck
Funny, I've basically done the same thing with FreeDOS and WordPerfect. I always thought to myself: why doesn't TypewriterOS exist already? Apparently it does now. :)

That's called reckless driving.

Selfish and entitled behavior like that makes my blood boil.

mikae1··on Experimental release of GrapheneOS for Pixel 9a
Same here, no problems. You can run Google Play Services and Google apps sandboxed using the built-in GrapheneOS App Store. There's nothing like it.

As you say, f32 requires post-processing. What is the most minimal post-processing needed?

> It appears that nothing has changed in the last decade for the Android ROM community.

The exception: GrapheneOS. I installed without hassle over USB via my web browser (!).

mikae1··on I maintain a 17 year old ThinkPad
As I see it, an aluminum slab MNT Reform Next[1] would be a better Thinkpad replacement than a Framework (from a build and reparability standpoint).

They're likely not taking on Gmail, they're taking on Mailbox.org, Proton and Tuta.

> Europe should be making industry-leading apps. Europe should produce software startups that make products that get used worldwide.

I've kind of lost hope when it comes to commercial services and proprietary apps. They're sadly all sooner or later enshittified. We need something different, not by promises but by design (FOSS).

> EU subsidized clones of popular American products feels like admitting defeat.

I think it's a fresh and needed take on the financing of our common digital infra.

mikae1··on Hackintoshing as a sustainable environmental practice
Not saying it isn't good, it is. I still use Silicon Macs at work.

Just depends on your priorities and what you value I guess.

I'm not on board with the iOSification of macOS either. IMO, it's has gotten progressively worse with every version since Snow Leopard. Atomic Fedora distros and KDE Plasma has made me look forward to upgrades again (and yeah, they happen automatically in the background).

With macOS I just stuck around as long as I could knowing that there'd be no upsides to getting the next macOS release.

mikae1··on Hackintoshing as a sustainable environmental practice
I ran a Hackintosh as my main machine for many years. I specced (using info found on tonymacx86[1]) and built it around 15 years ago to make it work well as a Hackintosh.

And work well it did. Incredibly well actually. But now the doors are closing. macOS will soon be ARM/Silicon only and that will be the end of a Hackintosh era. That's the reason I'm not willing to invest the time or energy to do the same again.

Hopefully sometime another era of Hackintoshers will find a way to make macOS run on non-Apple ARM hardware. Perhaps it's already happening? :)

After 20 years of Hackintosh and Apple hardware I eventually lost hope in Apple due to their unsustainable practices (mostly unserviceable and unupgradeable soldered memory and storage) and moved on to Linux (https://getaurora.dev/). Couldn't be happier with KDE Plasma.

mikae1··on Waterfox: Fast and Private Web Browser
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41911352

I'm sorry but this is near unusable since the death of XUL and introduction of WebExtensions. I was a truly avid user of VimFX which did the same thing. Vimium these days does not work when a page hasn't finished loading and it doesn't work on blank pages (about:blank) or any other "system page" (like the preferences or addons). The "o" key can no longer highlight the address bar but brings up a non-native address bar that does not find my bookmarks as it should.

Imagine you couldn't click on another tab with your mouse pointer while the current active one is loading. Yes, it's as terribly frustrating as it sounds.

In the XUL days I could even use vim shortcuts to access every button in the Firefox UI!

Luckily there is a solution for now. VimFx[1] is still being updated and works with the LegacyFox shim!

mikae1··on Waterfox: Fast and Private Web Browser
The really cool thing about Waterfox is that REAL vim keyboard navigation via VimFX[1] has been supported.

The integration is much deeper than what Vimium and the other WebExtensions allow.

mikae1··on Welcome to Ladybird, a truly independent web browser
> We’ve seen a little confusion about the language regarding licenses, so I want to clear that up. We need a license to allow us to make some of the basic functionality of Firefox possible. Without it, we couldn’t use information typed into Firefox to perform your searches, for example. It does NOT give us ownership of your data or a right to use it for anything other than what is described in the Privacy Notice. We’ve added this note to our blog to clarify, so thank you for your feedback.[1]

So, did the internet explode again for no reason?

It's clear that progress is incremental at this point. At the same time Anthropic and OpenAI are bleeding money.

It's unclear to me how they'll shift to making money while providing almost no enhanced value.

mikae1··on Mad at Meta? Don't Let Them Collect and Monetize Your Personal Data
As a Swede, the Amazon comment is funny.

They came here perhaps two years ago and everybody I know agrees they suck and can not compete with our local alternatives. They're not cheaper and the website is an utter mess of auto translations and dark patterns. Order flash storage and pray it's not counterfeit. We use Prisjakt[1] to compare prices and price history between shops.

About Google... Yes, YouTube is hard for me to avoid. I use StartPage for search (which is Google search proxy just like DDG is a Bing proxy). Switching to DDG wouldn't be that much of a sacrifice. I don't have a Google account and YT works well via RSS. FreshRSS is basically my YT frontend.

Facebook is the hardest to leave, without a doubt. Civil society isn't organized around any of Amazon's or Google's services. Parent group for school? Facebook. A group for your neighborhood? Facebook. Local trading of goods? Facebook marketplace. I've made the data takeout and have been hovering over that account deletion button I don't know how many times... But I don't follow through.

So, I respectfully don't agree. :)

My self hosted FreshRSS instance is better than Google Reader ever was.

Just about every website and service I use has feeds.

People/geeks are rediscovering RSS.

I think this might be the golden age of RSS.

mikae1··on UK Weighs Making Netflix Users Pay License Fee to Fund BBC
That's sort of the thing we've recently switched to in Sweden too.

Everyone who pays tax in Sweden also pays the fee for public service. 1% of the income (with a 1347 SEK roof) goes to SVT, SR and UR.

There's historically been a reluctance to making it a tax because public service wants to claim independence from the state. Now it has gone from a mandatory (but escapable) fee to an inescapable mandatory fee. Which is, basically, a tax...
