mieses··on Heroin addicts often seem normal
just stop all the programs, let the parents self-medicate, and let the kids do what they will. the problem will be solved in 12 months if the governments stays out of it. any solution has a cost in lost lives. some solutions don't keep killing people year after year.
mieses··on Heroin addicts often seem normal
Most doctors truly are quacks. They are afraid and greedy.

Rehabilitation efforts would be more successful if not de-incentivized to expel participants for relapsing, i.e., compared to the rest of the world, US rehab programs are soft. Why?

mieses··on Apple defined ICE as a "protected class" in blocking anti-ICE apps
Should non-citizens also have the right to track federal agencies?
mieses··on ICE-tracking app developers aren’t giving up
I like this tactic - when my enemy is using it.

People vs tyrant thinking ignores the world beyond your bubble (your borders). Elegant in theory but impractical.

mieses··on ICE-tracking app developers aren’t giving up
What is the big deal about apps? Is the app store their cathedral? Why can't they use shady web sites like the rest of us common infidels?

such a rule follower. a normal person would have linked to archive.is.
mieses··on Evaluating the impact of AI on the labor market: Current state of affairs
if you took away the factories, the outcomes for the working class were probably worse. it's easy to form polemics against new things that could have done better.
mieses··on Fewer H-1B visas did not mean more employment for natives (2017)
Rates of immigration in US history were small compared to current rates. Their conclusions are based on small numbers. Small numbers over time can "integrate" into a culture. Large numbers over time may also be called an invasion. A lot of the economic papers lead to the conclusion that infinite Somalis will have net positive effects. We need better research.
mieses··on Fewer H-1B visas did not mean more employment for natives (2017)
The argument makes sense if you value numeric population over culture.
mieses··on Everything that's wrong with Google Search in one image
they've become a shady, low quality search engine. Even Yandex returns midjourney.com as the first result.

mieses··on The H-1B Visa Program and Its Impact on the U.S. Economy
Agreed. And if there aren't enough Americans or if our culture does not value academics then the solution is not more H1B's but to fix the culture. Higher tariffs on foreign labor and products will reduce the debt. The money that would have gone towards debt interest could be spent on domestic needs, including cultural programs.

mieses··on I just want an 80×25 console, but that's no longer possible
The SGI Irix boot console was 80 characters wide and kind of elegant. It worked on different resolutions and looked like a floating window where the margins could be of arbitrary size.

mieses··on Scientists are rethinking the immune effects of SARS-CoV-2
So what? Is there a medical term for the beneficial effects of putting dirt into your mouth as a child? How often does the expression "common sense" appear in medical texts? Therefore "common sense" is politicized garbage!

"Every movement we make damages our muscles" is also a true statement and can be misused by idiots.

mieses··on Quantum Mechanics, Concise Book
As a member of the general audience I was disappointed to find no color illustrations. Faced with walls of text and an absence of enjoyable distraction and marginalia, I began to think (which rarely happens) "wouldn't the relevant audience desire more mathematical equations?". And then I closed the pdf.

Wow, Yarvin must be a serious threat if HN readers are posting "lawliberty.org" articles by a writer who's problem with Yarvin is that he "omits any reference to a loving God Who governs the world through His Providence".
mieses··on Hijacking Trust? Bitvise Under Fire for Controlling Domain of FOSS Project PuTTY
extremely subjective. the damage of allowing schoolmarm types to determine laws based on what they think is parasitic or deceptive is more dangerous than the unambiguous and coherent concept of property. PuTTY owns https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ There are a number of strings in this domain that cause me great distress. Should I be allowed to seize their property?
mieses··on As a Labrador swam by me out to sea his owner said I hope he doesn't meet a seal
interesting and funny. But I do not agree with your premise that it is easier to make an successful AI dog than a successful AI human.

Humans pay more attention to their dogs than to humans, for obvious reasons.

We would not mind a human that acted like an AI - the artificiality simplifies the relationship and is a positive feature. With dogs, we notice the slightest detail and would be bothered by AI limitations. We might act the same way towards music and art. We would spend hours listening to an album or looking at a painting while trying our best to ignore the people around us. The posters that describe the dog "experience" in a simple mechanistic way have probably never owned a dog.

Another way of looking at it - we have to deal with humans. We choose to deal with a dog. Therefore the dog AI has more to live up to.

mieses··on As a Labrador swam by me out to sea his owner said I hope he doesn't meet a seal
Me too. but the essay is pretty good. there will be AI copies of humans but never of dogs.
