midnitewarrior··on Ancient Roman soldier carved a phallus with a personal insult in this stone
It takes nothing to get a can of spray paint and deface a wall with an insult or any crude depiction. Imagine the commitment required to carve an insult on stone. This man was truly angry.
midnitewarrior··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully used LibreOffice for their business?
I was a Libre Office user, explaining to you why I am no longer one. Clients would have problems with my documents and it made their lives hard so it became my problem. I'm a fan now of just using what works, stuck using Google for now, fortunately not needing to write serious documents with it.
midnitewarrior··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully used LibreOffice for their business?
Never had success with it, being 97% as good as Microsoft Office isn't the same as being Microsoft Office. Formatting issues when sharing documents, tables that get blown out, looks kind of amateur sending those messed up documents to others unfortunately.
midnitewarrior··on Vine removal technique foils devastating grape disease
I was viewing a different hacker news article and saw the id=.... at the top and realized it was very close to pi, so I came here, glad I'm not the only one who noticed this!
midnitewarrior··on Ask HN: Why is the PDF format so inaccessible?
It's old, proprietary, modeled after the PostScript printer control language, from an era before XML, and never had the intention of being open.
midnitewarrior··on Show HN: I built a website to find nearby cafes to work remotely from
Active signal blocking / jamming with electrical devices are illegal in the US, but passive devices like signal-blocking wallpaper and windows are entirely legal.
midnitewarrior··on The Reason Young People Can’t Afford a Home
The biggest problem is too many people in one spot. Endless growth is not a guaranteed right, nor is it a law of nature.
midnitewarrior··on The Reason Young People Can’t Afford a Home
This is some real libertarian propaganda, blaming the environmentalists and building codes for limiting the housing supply.
midnitewarrior··on Google Domains is out of beta
Google has a product out of beta? Time to shut it down.
midnitewarrior··on Google will shut down Currents, the work-focused Google Plus replacement
Why would anybody adopt a new Google platform? Very high chance Google will shut it down, I wouldn't bother adopting it because of the heartbreak that will occur in 2-3 years when they discontinue it.

Their reputation for shutting products down is now a barrier to adoption.

midnitewarrior··on Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes
This isn't about being offensive, it's giving credibility to misinformation that undermines public health measures and kills people.
midnitewarrior··on Cuba’s bet on home-grown Covid vaccines is paying off
The majority of the suffering in Cuba is due to being cut off from the world's largest economy. The population is largely happy, but have had to survive on little due to the compounded effects of many decades of US embargo. The people are well-educated, have a rich culture, good medical system, but live in an economy that has been strangled by an outdated US policy that causes immense suffering. The Castro's obviously have problems, but the effects of the embargo are as much, if not more significant.
midnitewarrior··on Colorado county's voting machines banned after security breach
Breaches are acceptable and their detection proves the security system works. Undetected breaches would indicate a complete failure of the security.

Problems are to be expected, as long as the system can detect and deal with the breach, democracy is protected, albeit at greater cost in this instance.

midnitewarrior··on The Coronavirus Is Here Forever
Everybody has pre-existing conditions, whether they know it or not, the cause of death is typically reported to be the straw that breaks the camel's back. People with chronic conditions often does due to acute causes, like contracting a virus. We often call this the cause of death.

If you're living with cancer and not terminally ill in hospice and die 2 weeks later after contracting COVID, you likely died of COVID.

midnitewarrior··on Show HN: Volcano | Co-watch YouTube videos just by adding –-- to the URL
Url is a common place to modify behavior, but this is the domain name, something that doesn't get hacked because the domain name conveys trust.
midnitewarrior··on Ask HN: What is your favourite stocks/options trading platform?
Robinhood is for unsavy traders lured in by (false) advertising for saving money on trading. While they advertise no fees for trading, their poor execution means you get pricing that's far worse than normal trading fees.
midnitewarrior··on One-Shot Free-View Neural Talking-Head Synthesis for Video Conferencing
My take is that they are limiting their liability in case anyone is overly letigius, or if they mishandle the data. Yes, they could do the things you describe, but my guess is they don't want to get sued by people they are providing a free service to.
midnitewarrior··on Windows 11 will create heaps of needless trash
Microsoft can't afford to have a useless version, there are now viable alternatives to Windows.
midnitewarrior··on Windows 11 will create heaps of needless trash
I have a perfectly good PC from 2015 that has a Gen 5 Intel processor. It is 64-bit, 6-core, supports TPM 2.0, and supports the virtualization instructions, UEFI, etc.

I have 64 gigs of ram in this and other upgrades, it works great, but it will die with Win 10 because the CPU isn't on Microsoft's list. When Win 10 support is done, so is my PC that I've invested a lot of money in. So yeah, it's going to become trash or a Linux box I haven't a need for.

midnitewarrior··on Has UML died without anyone noticing?
Perhaps the better choice was to have automated tools to turn source code into understandable business diagrams to allow business analysts to partner with software engineers, instead of the other way around.
midnitewarrior··on Brave disables Chromium FLoC features
I've earned over $600 worth of BAT from using Brave in the past 18 months. Can keep it or pay content creators with it, definitely not a scam.
midnitewarrior··on LG dryer traffic – 1GB+ daily up/down
Ask yourself why you need a dryer that needs wi-fi.
midnitewarrior··on Parler sues Amazon (again), claims AWS ban sank a billion-dollar valuation
If their billion dollar valuation were real, I'd think they would have been more responsible with their business and abided by the AWS terms.
midnitewarrior··on Facebook Reinstates Trump's Account
His only term. Three-time loser of the popular vote.
midnitewarrior··on Brave Introduces Brave Today, the Privacy-Preserving News Reader
Monitoring users without violating their privacy is the point of Brave. Affiliate links do not violate the integrity or the privacy of the browsing experience. These are great things, it keeps the browser free from cost while still protecting your privacy. It is how they continue to exist without financial support from Google.
midnitewarrior··on Fixing a 3 year old bug in Nvidia GeForce Experience
I believe his issue was that I'd was poorly documented, and that NVIDIA needed to use a more exclusive id. Presumably, it's not clear in the documentation that the input class NVIDIA chose also included the controller input too.
midnitewarrior··on Vitamin D insufficiency may account for almost 90% of Covid-19 deaths
The Lancet published this in May, strongly advising patients to address Vitamin D deficiency.

midnitewarrior··on FrontPage: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
The web used to have parity between creation of content and consumption when desktop access was the way the world surfed the web. Since smartphones took over, the web has been about consumption of media, requiring most contribution to be through apps. What sadist would edit HTML on a phone?
midnitewarrior··on Luca Concept Car: An Electric Vehicle Made from Plastic Waste
I think this web server was made from plastic waste.
midnitewarrior··on Study finds people have short-lived immunity to seasonal coronaviruses
> covid-19 was going to follow the seasonality of the common cold and the flu. That prediction turned out to be really incorrect as cases in the US exploded in the summertime when they were expected to wane.

How do you know the virus wasn't waning? I have always anticipated that summer was us giving us a break before it got worse in the Fall and Winter. Perhaps it is seasonal, we won't know until Spring. It may be bad in Summer, but really bad during the other times.
