I like to tinker with software

midnightbobarun··on Show HN: I built a version of Omarchy that runs on Apple Silicon
This is extremely cool :D
midnightbobarun··on Grok 4.6 scores 61 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index
I assume SpaceX does it because they figure it's a good source of revenue, and it means they can keep another thing in-house instead of relying on Anthropic or OpenAI for their AI needs.

As for why anyone else would want it: I've found it's a good model for coding, and it sometimes catches bugs that other models (especially open source models) don't always spot.

midnightbobarun··on Oracle bans AI-generated code from OpenJDK
So contributions to OpenJDK have to be hand-written, while internally, Oracle uses AI generated code... I guess the logic is that employees who use AI generated code (theoretically) review their code better? The whole thing still seems a little strange.
midnightbobarun··on Muse Code and Muse Spark 1.2
I think Meta might have made a mistake by not offering a free tier like Google did when they release Gemini CLI back in the day, or even how OpenAI lets you use Codex (or whatever it's called now) for free with a monthly usage limit for free plans. It'd be a great way to get people into the Muse ecosystem, and they could tighten usage limits to "encourage" people to get a paid plan.
midnightbobarun··on Software development with AI is starting to feel like cooking steak
It's a level of badly written that makes me think it could be a human, or it might just be an LLM that writes differently from a typical ChatGPT article.

It is slop though, either way.

midnightbobarun··on Almost no skill required to cook a steak
Considering the article starts with "Cooking a steak requires almost no skill. Put it in a hot pan", I think I see the root of his problem. Pan searing a steak only makes sense in a small number of situations: you have a leaner cut like filet mignon, you want precise temperature control to achieve the Maillard reaction, or you know none of these things but just really like stinking up your kitchen and splattering butter everywhere for the aesthetic and the olfactory experience. For most cases, you would be better off with a grill rather than a pan.

Now maybe you're not knowledgeable about steak, and you're not sure whether the cut of steak you bought would be better off pan seared or grilled. Is ribeye better in a pan or a grill? That depends on whether you want it more smokey or more buttery. Ask an AI and tell it how you want it to taste, and it'll tell you the answer.

His metaphorical steak machine would produce better results if he had simply asked "I want a steak and I have this specific cut and I want it to have this kind of flavor, how do you suggest I make it?" rather than "cook steak on a hot pan, make no mistakes."

TL;DR: Tell the AI what you want and then ask how it for a recommendation of how to do it. You don't have to "understand software." You only need to understand how to ask the right questions.

midnightbobarun··on DeepSeek planning to significantly raise prices
DeepSeek was such a workhorse... I've had some pretty decent results with Hy3 and Nemotron too, but they're not the same. I'll probably have to switch to them (or find other alternatives) depending on how much DeepSeek raises prices.
midnightbobarun··on Can I vibe code it?
Huh, this is actually really interesting (and the analysis for some of the sites answers some questions I'd randomly think about sometimes)
midnightbobarun··on Kimi-K3 on HuggingFace
There's two threads now, apparently

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49066591

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49068029

midnightbobarun··on Kimi-K3 Releases on HuggingFace 7/27
K3 releasing as open source right at the same time that people are criticizing Opus for questionable performance (there's even a thread on HN about Opus 5's problems)... this is such a flex.
midnightbobarun··on How to write English prose (2023)
normal person: "I like to yap."

Sir Baroquesly Yappington, Esq., an intellectual: writes a whole article about it

midnightbobarun··on Ask HN: How do you figure out what you're passionate about?
Take a vacation, and after a few days, think about what your mind naturally drifts to when there's nothing that you have to do in particular, and no special obligation. Maybe that will help point you in the right direction.
midnightbobarun··on Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta warn against overregulating open-weight models
Nvidia benefits no matter what because their hardware is being used. Microsoft and Meta benefit by making sure that the gap between "Anthropic/OpenAI" and "everyone else" doesn't widen, or they'll be hopelessly dependent on those frontier labs.
midnightbobarun··on Country went 100% electric vehicles overnight with a drastic approach
The charging situation largely depends on where you live, as I see electric chargers all over the place (mostly shopping areas, but also at hospitals) and I don't even live in a big city. I don't know if that's true for your area, but Google Maps will usually show it.

For Laos though, I do hope they'll make sure to expand their charging infrastructure. I've heard enough stories of governments trying to push EVs but not bothering to provide the infrastructure for it or providing incentives for companies to do so.

midnightbobarun··on Claude Opus 5
I unironically hope Haiku gets an update considering it came out in October of last year and it seems like Anthropic just kind of forgot about it.
midnightbobarun··on Country went 100% electric vehicles overnight with a drastic approach
Interesting, but it seems like this really only affects consumers, since commercial vehicles will still use diesel. And the fact that they're almost certainly going to get all their EVs from China... hmm, I wonder who or what really convinced the government in Laos to go for this?
midnightbobarun··on Em dashes are amazing
Same here. Long before ChatGPT existed, I always associated em dashes with pretentious writers who chose style over substance, mostly as their writing had no real substance. That AI makes em dashes a faux pas in these days... it brings me a little joy.
midnightbobarun··on Opus 5 is currently #1 on Artificial Analysis Intelligence Leaderboard
5.6 Sol (max) being cheaper than all of these is wild, considering how good the output is too
midnightbobarun··on Light Flip Phone
It certainly looks cool (and I'm partial to the red one) but I do have to wonder how easy this would be to live with long term? Because I feel like it would be cool for a few weeks, but then what about after...?
midnightbobarun··on Claude Opus 5
It looks great, and those coding benchmarks are impressive... now if only it didn't come out just days after I let my Claude subscription expire :')
midnightbobarun··on Google has started Pre-Training Gemini 4
Every time there's any news or rumors about a new Gemini model, I cross my fingers and hope that it'll be the one that finally catches up to other big AI coding models. It hasn't happened yet, but I'm hoping this time it will... :')
midnightbobarun··on Show HN: Blog in WASM Linux
That's definitely a cool and unique concept... nice
midnightbobarun··on Orion Browser by Kagi
I also like the more browsers have built-in adblock, but so far I've never seen any of them copy uBlock Origin's "element picker" (the little eyedropper tool) feature... it's good for getting rid of annoying stuff on certain websites and only uBlock Origin seems to do it. :(
midnightbobarun··on Ask HN: I stopped fighting AI over-reliance and built a workflow around it
I think we have a sort-of-similar AI setup, except I use HTML files rather than markdown, and this is because I'm on macOS and it's easier to use "quick look" on HTML files than markdown (HTMl shows up nicely, markdown is just plain text). Also, I ask the AI to get rid of old documents and try to merge documents together, so that there's not as many documents cluttering up context.

As for motivation: I need to pay bills, all I can think is "I need to build more"... :'D

midnightbobarun··on Eric Schmidt tried to convert Google to Java
Didn't he get his way in the end? Java becoming the programming language of choice for Android happened when he was CEO.
midnightbobarun··on Nvidia DGX Spark as a daily driver
Super-powerful (if rather pricy) Linux desktop that happens to play games while doing everything else... that man is living my dream :'D
midnightbobarun··on Do you manage task/todo differently in this AI era?
The notes app has a search function, so I've never had any difficulty finding what I'm looking for
midnightbobarun··on The Last MPEG-4 Visual Patent Has Expired
Very nice, I hope this means increased support for it in open source projects
midnightbobarun··on New mandatory Gmail, your Android backup storage needs may increase
I had to look at my phone's backup settings just now, there's not really all that much being backed up but there's some apps that I had no idea were being backed up at all (and I didn't think they made much sense either).

Anyway, for anyone who's using an Android phone, this is probably a good time to check and see what's getting backed up to Google, because some of that stuff is probably not necessary.

midnightbobarun··on Do you manage task/todo differently in this AI era?
I use the notes app on my phone, the same way I've been doing for years and years... that's probably not an exciting answer, but it's worked for me.

Maybe I could pass it off to an AI and see if I benefit from that somehow, but... eh... the notes app has worked okay.
