microjim··on Coffee linked to slower biological ageing among those with severe mental illness
I'm a caffeine/coffee consumer because I like its effects, and the claims to overall physiological benefits appear solid, but why do you think multiple and varied spiritual schools choose to forgo it, especially in coffee form?
microjim··on Nitrous oxide: Laughing gas possession to be illegal in three weeks
It feels quite trippy and delirious and somewhat physically pleasurable and if you have enough you teleport into another dimension
microjim··on Ask HN: OpenAI does have a moat. Why do people think it doesn't?
Can you please define groundbreaking?
microjim··on Irish town unites in smartphone ban for young children
Interesting and promising seeming strategy to counter not only issues of 'peer pressure to own a device' but 'culture pressure' wherein assumedly for many schools most of the topics of humor and interest are quite online.

A couple of issue to highlight though - Internet memes and content can be reach crazy levels of salient and funny though, and in appropriate amounts, seems life enriching and sometimes contributory to consciousness and self-awareness no?

Additionally, a purely suppressive approach creates a fairly big incentive for kids/guardians to exploit the informational asymmetry of the system using clandestine/contraband access.

For this I propose community provided memes. As chosen by Birdwatch style-voting.

microjim··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
Seems like one of the benefits you get with a state is to regulate powerful technologies. Is this not commonly agreed upon?

microjim··on CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg
Yes that’s correct. Probably a better way of articulating what I meant to say is that unlike adding more battery mass which gives you diminishing returns as that additional weight must be carried too, improvements in energy density give you gains closer to 1:1. Though in retrospect this isn’t a very interesting or insightful statement, hah.
microjim··on CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg
Cool! What didn’t occur to me until I learnt it was that you get a multiplicative benefit with energy density when weight is a major factor (air transport, especially) because you need to spend less energy accelerating mass used by the battery itself.
microjim··on Wobbly clock
Yes!
microjim··on Wobbly clock
Do hands release from the line they're on at the point of the next time increment being reached (meaning, by the time they hit the next line, they'll be late) or does it kindly release earlier, affording time for the hand to travel to and arrive at the next line in time for it to represent the current time?
microjim··on Ask HN: How many of you are open to Piracy again?
This implies there is something about """you""" that is inherently lacking rather than the habits currently in your brain and "more discipline" often means """if only I would castigate myself more"""

There's a body chemistry component here. Are you possibly mouth breathing while you sleep?

microjim··on Interpreting a Sierpinski Triangle Fractal as musical notes sounds good
This comment is so confidently ignorant of rhythm and melody, lol

Pay attention to the counterpoint (one voice rising, one voice falling) when one big triangle ends and the one above/below it starts.

Music is harmony, melody, rhythm, and dynamics. Dynamics means variations in softness/loudness, but none applied here, and someone else has noted the rhythmic component.

microjim··on ChatGPT no longer displays a clear left-leaning political bias
Maybe so, but the author says ‘The updated ChatGPT answers to the Political Spectrum Quiz are exquisitely neutral, consistently striving to provide a steel man argument for both sides of an issue‘ which suggests more than just a positional change. This seems good? Using the robots to explore opportunities and options but ultimately let us decide what world we want to live in, right?
microjim··on Prompt engineering DaVinci-003 on our own docs for automated support (Part I)
I agree with you principally, and generally, but in rather small domains like this I would imagine symptom management using negative examples (i.e. training pairs where the response is a refusal to answer) and adding more explicit statements about what is not true, possible, or known to the corpus would get you to a pretty good place.
microjim··on Na-S Battery: Low-cost with four times the capacity of lithium
Would love to hear from domain experts here. Reading the article one finds that they only created very small cathodes rather than anything close to a 'consumer sized' battery.

microjim··on Ask HN: Which books have made you a better thinker and problem solver?
This sounds great, but isn't this -

> hopefully keep them at bay as much as possible

...wishful thinking, or symptom management, rather than cutting at the root of the issue (less than rational thinking)? Would be happy to be corrected here.

microjim··on Ask HN: Do you recall any book or course that made a topic finally click?
More accurately -

Callbacks are anonymous functions [or references to named functions] that you pass to asynchronous [or synchronous] functions so you can work with the produced values [or do anything else]

microjim··on Birdwatch, Twitter's collaborative fact checking system
I agree that solid epistemology has better specificity and sensitivity for what's true, and that's the idea with independent fact-checker institutions, but it appears none have managed to gain or retain widespread trust.

An approximate correlation is progress here. If you know of a better heuristic I'd be very interested in hearing it.

Also, can we agree on what problem is most important to be solving right now? Is it 1) we haven't reached complete truth across all dimensions of knowledge or that 2) we need to build bridges crossing the massive societal trust schisms?

microjim··on Birdwatch, Twitter's collaborative fact checking system
‘Horrible’ epistemology is a bit harsh (signal = approximate measure rather than direct), but this is indeed a valid loophole. Would be interesting to explore if third or fourth groups that do not benefit from the mutually agreed lie could feasibly counter this.

microjim··on How I learned about corporate firewalls
Well, that depends. You certainly want to ensure the availability of the information under your remit isn't compromised by a threat actor, but reducing your attack surface by, say, shutting down external internet access is certainly a valid mitigation in some circumstances.
microjim··on How I learned about corporate firewalls
>authenticity, privacy, reliability, and (non)repudiation.

These fall under integrity, confidentiality, availability, and integrity respectively! The CIA triad is pretty comprehensive!

microjim··on Ask HN: How do I lead a team in whom I have no confidence?
Some people like the challenge of fixing dysfunctional teams like this. It’s the core difference between ‘leadership’ and ‘managing’. If that’s something that interests you, check out stuff like David Marquet’s book, but from personal experience also set some sort of timebox (3 months) on on when to reassess and see where things are at and if you want to continue.
microjim··on Ask HN: What exactly is a mindfulness meditation?
The mind causes itself unnecessary suffering.

There is a way out of this suffering.

The way out is by investigating and comprehending your experience.

That’s the gist of it.

Edit: you asked for personal experience:

Sitting on a cushion: calming and gladdening the mind by working skilfully with intentions, attention, and awareness to create the conditions for insight to arise

In daily life, off the cushion: cultivating awareness to notice what happens inside it more (to notice patterns about mental activities that lead to suffering and those that lead to happiness :))
