mickdarling··on Skype banned from China
I'm reading http://craphound.com/ftw/ For The Win By Cory Doctorow right now. In it some of the main characters try to join a Gold Farmers Union, and the argument of how they can effectively mobilize is that now anyone in the world can instantly communicate and organize for workers rights and fair wages. Before these communication tools only the rich had the ability to organize countrywide and worldwide, but with access to skype or other VOIP tools the workers can have the same level of organization.

Maybe Cory Doctorow has a fan in the Chinese Communist party and they decided to nip that particular problem in the bud.

mickdarling··on Ask HN: I built a site that just went ridiculously viral. What do I do now?
Yeah, and I met Mark 3 or 4 years ago and he had already started at least one and maybe 2 successful startups.
mickdarling··on Ask HN: I built a site that just went ridiculously viral. What do I do now?
Hey Mark, it's been a while. Nicely done. You said it was just an MVP so I assume you have a product designed beyond this point. So, NOW is the time to do some validation on what those other ideas are. You have a large audience who already know who you are and are willingly giving you input.

Maybe in put down your follow ideas in short little phrases and have people provide three words on that, if they wish, along with three words on their friends. It will give you great insight into what THIS audience thinks is a good or bad next step for you.

This is a site that will not maintain interest as it is beyond a short period unless you add more to it. So the key here is to move forward quickly, even if it is in tiny incremental steps. letting the users help you make some of those choices of what steps to take can only help.

mickdarling··on Wi-Fi Overload at High-Tech Meetings
I had to convince a former bosses boss of mine that this was the proper setup. He had setup the network when the company was tiny and explaining what needed to be changed when we grew to more than 10 times the users and 20 times the wifi devices was a lesson in convincing a brick wall. Getting all the best practices collected was not an easy task.
mickdarling··on The Benefits of Exercising Before Breakfast
I am finally able to do regular workouts after recovering from a slipped disk. But, the weight I have put on in the intervening time is hard to work off, especially this time of year.

So I am going to try this and see if it improves my burn rate, or at least slows my girth rate. :-)

mickdarling··on Ask HN: LinkedIn made me reset my password (my email was in the Gawker dump)
Makes me feel better. I was "pretty sure" that i had only used Twitter OAuth to comment, and have been unable to confirm that. I haven't received an email from hint.io or a reset from LinkedIn so a little safer.
mickdarling··on APIs that developers should know about
Saplo looks to be a good resource for my new twitter app so we don't have to build all our own in-house tools to duplicate pretty much what it looks like they are doing.

I signed up to get access to the API's there, but does anyone on here have experience using them?

mickdarling··on Which ereader device should I buy?
If the Plastic Logic E-reader was out I would suggest looking at that. I played with it for about 30 minutes and interviewed a lead developer.

It was a super light, easy to ready, all e-ink, 8.5x11 touch screen. It worked great in my hands, but they had manufacturing issues, and delayed retails sales multiple times, and finally canceled that version. If it rears it's head in retail shelves giv it a look.

mickdarling··on Which ereader device should I buy?
I have an Entourage Edge and it does have a nice big screen, I I know it supports PDF's I use them all the time. Not positive about table of contents support, but I can try that out in a bit.

It does have a lot of issues though. It has two screens, one e-ink, and one LCD. It uses Android 1.6 right now and has no access to the Android Market. The company that makes it has minimal resources and they are really not supportive of developers. The LCD screen is resistive touch and its responsiveness isn't great. You can get a very long time on a charge if you make sure to turn the LCD off while you are reading. It isn't the worlds greatest e-reader, but it might suit your requirements where nothing else does.

mickdarling··on EFF: Online Speech is Only as Strong as the Weakest Intermediary
It is the perception of it being true that is truly damaging, regardless of the facts. As the article mentions at the end, it "Other Internet intermediaries should now expect to receive a phone call when some other member of Congress is unhappy with speech they are hosting. After all, it worked on Amazon."

If Amazon had just kept the site up, OR if there was no call to their offices about it, and they removed WikiLeaks on their own, the perception would be different. A more independent Amazon and a world where US companies can make their own legal decisions about content without Gov't interference or coercion.

Now the perception is someone as big as Amazon can get scared by a phone call, and no place is safe to put a site that might tick off a gov't official, and they get ticked off at a LOT of stuff.

mickdarling··on Solo Founders And Pluralisation
I am a solo founder in a situation where I am pretty much damned if I say "we" or damned if I say "I" since I do have a team. They are all friends and contractors some working for a little equity but others just on contract.

The problem I run into is I want to include them when talking about developments "we" have made on our app, but at the same time, in startup circles people immediately think I am BS'ing them on how big my team is.

If I use "I" and then can't go into every minute detail of our database architecture and API calls, and why we chose that instead of X, Y and Z, I look like a fraud. I trust my developers to help point me in the right direction with regard to languages, API's, development processes and the like. They give me the general details and I make the call.

To solve this issue, among others, I am basically learning everything I can about the developing and by the time this hits V-2.0 I should at least be able to build v-1.0 from scratch on my own.

mickdarling··on RSS Is Dead, But Reader For Mac Makes It A Beautiful Corpse
I actually saw this article in my RSS reader Feedly http://www.feedly.com/, which does a lot of the same stuff in, I think a prettier fashion, with a browser extension for Chrome or Firefox.
mickdarling··on Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (Do You Have Asperger's?)
30 with several of the wrong answers being my 50/50 choices with the actual correct answer. Nearly all of the ones I got correct, I was instantly certain.

One, I think "ashamed", looked just like the expression on a character in a TV show, SGU colonel young, and I realized he nails the mood perfectly.

mickdarling··on Y Combinator W2011 application (my rejection email)
When I got rejected from the MassChallenge business plan competition, I made a proposal that they didn't take but still think it might be valuable.

A "Best of the Rest" that could happen near the same time as maybe Demo day. Just adhoc come online and display the application video and details, and then show what we have done in the same time we would have been in SV.

mickdarling··on Calculus distilled into hours
I have been intermittently trying to teach my 6 year old niece calculus graphically. She can visually tell what the slope of the curve is and filling in the area under the curve is, well child's play. :-)
mickdarling··on "Rate My Startup" Post Policy
i think this XKCD points out the issue rather well. http://xkcd.com/810/

Is there any kind of captcha on the submission for RMS? If not perhaps a direct link to the other RMS's and a requirement to post there.

mickdarling··on ShowHN: Qwiki for your web accounts (GitHub, HN, Netflix, etc)
This great, and I am already thinking of plugins to add to it. The speed it takes to switch from one section to another could easily be increased by loading the list of sites on tabs in the background as it is reading off the data.

And, yes please port it to Chrome.

mickdarling··on Twitter May Raise Another $200 Million
Kinda minimal on the content side for this article. But the linked article http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101022/is-twitter-going-ba... does have some interesting info in it. Partly that "...the company still has the majority of its cash from the last round in the bank"
mickdarling··on "The 3D universe in which we appear to live is no more than a hologram."
No one knows exactly what is going on at the Plank scale, That is partly what the guy says in the article.

“People trying to tie reality together don’t have any data, just a lot of beautiful math,” said Hogan. “The hope is that this gives them something to work with.”

Theories vary widely on what happens to the universe at that scale. This kind of experimental data might be the thing that transforms string theory from "Not even wrong" to actually wrong, or maybe even partly right.

mickdarling··on How Google understands language like a 10-year-old
So in the 15 years they started using statistical methods for understanding language, googles ability to understand language is at about an 8 year olds level. So it is learning about half as fast as a human child. Not bad and an excellent opportunity to predict it's growth rate for the future.

If this is a linear learning curve, in another 15 years it should just start to be able to 'understand' the nuances of Shakespeare and Ulysses among others.
