mickdarling··on Show HN: Merview – OSS Mermaid and Markdown Editor and Viewer
After I posted here, I went to mermaid.js.org to submit it as an integration, and I embarrassingly realized...

I forgot to add direct support for simple mermaid diagrams without any markdown at all.

So I just fixed that and released a small update.

mickdarling··on The effect of shingles vaccination at different stages of dementia
That's your reasoned choice. I wasn't given that opportunity to make that choice. Most people aren't given that choice. That's my complaint.

Especially when the delta is less than one year. That's just quibbling.

mickdarling··on The effect of shingles vaccination at different stages of dementia
The age gating of needing to be 50 years old to get the shingles vaccine is really obnoxious. I had shingles outbreaks twice in my life, one in my early 30's and once at 48. Obviously, both before 50 years old.

I had to argue with my doctor to prescribe the Shingles vaccine at 49. And when I had it in my 30s, nobody even bothered to give me any antivirals, which did exist at the time, or nerve pain relief.

After I had the shingles vaccine, nerve pain that I'd been suffering with every time I got the slightest little allergy or cold suddenly disappeared, and I haven't had it since more than a year later.

If you are under 50 years old, and had chickenpox, and especially if you've had one outbreak of shingles, force your doctors to prescribe the vaccine. It costs $100-$200 without insurance coverage, and it is worth it.

mickdarling··on Show HN: Shellcast.tv – Stream your vibe coding
I don't know that I'm particularly comfortable sending all my terminal commands off to a random site when a video could do just as well. I presume the reason you're doing that is so you can reconstruct it at whatever resolution is necessary. But I can think of all kinds of failure modes where that would be a "bad idea".
mickdarling··on ChatGPT Developer Mode: Full MCP client access
I've been using MCP servers with ChatGPT, but I've had to use external clients on the API. This works straight from the main client or on their website. That's a big win.
mickdarling··on Show HN: Shellcast.tv – Stream your vibe coding
I would actually be happy to stream some of the work I do. My project is entirely open source and I have some unique stuff I'm doing, but I'm not really all that happy about not seeing a stream of a set of videos that I would have to log in to see.

If you just have the videos available there, the pre-recorded ones and live streams that anyone can click on, that'd be great.

Of course, you'd need me to log in probably to stream it, but you should really have a list of videos that are ready to watch without any logins.

mickdarling··on Alterego: Thought to Text
I agree that it's an easy to fake demo and at the same time, if they're going to fake it, why make it seem so slow?

As to whether typing speed is a bottleneck for most people, maybe not most people, but definitely some people, and it's a massive bottleneck for me personally.

I think better when I'm talking and since I have started using speech to text, it has increased my writing speed and coding speed by at least an order, maybe two orders of magnitude.

But you are right, the AI filling in gaps can really cause trouble using speech, goodness knows what it's doing using sub-speech.

mickdarling··on Incident Report for Anthropic
Would that show up more with heavily cached data or less? Because I've been using very heavily cached data on the order of 30 to 1 cache versus not. And I haven't had much trouble with Claude Code at all in the last month. A few problems here and there, but they were sporadic. While I know other people have had massive issues, I wonder if the issues that occurred didn't effect cache as much and thus prevented me from seeing some of the worst aspects of it.
mickdarling··on The Future of Development: Introducing Warp 2.0 [video]
Classic AI hype update! Fine they are basically doing their own interface language on toolsets that we already have access to, and maybe that particular design language will fit the sweet spot for some folks. Does it add anything actually new...not really, maybe keeping your hands on the keyboard more, meh.

Meanwhile a real user accessibility issue of not allowing font size changes to the embedded UI elements has dozens of requests for them to fix since 2022 has never been touched. Maybe they can get their AI agent to fix their own platform for them. Since it is a closed source platform that as far as I can tell, since there is no option to use your own AI API keys sends all your AI content through their own servers.

Congrats on the update.

mickdarling··on Apple announces Foundation Models and Containerization frameworks, etc
bleary eyed, waking up while trying to find my reading glasses would make that interface essentially useless.
mickdarling··on Containerization is a Swift package for running Linux containers on macOS
I can see the decision to do it this way being related to their private secure cloud infrastructure for AI tools.
mickdarling··on Bypass DeepSeek censorship by speaking in hex
I’m talking about pruning a local LLM not using their service. There are plenty of ways to prune and distill. Heck DeepSeek was distilled from other models. You could simply run a distillation using Hex, then convert those outputs back to the target language.
mickdarling··on Bypass DeepSeek censorship by speaking in hex
I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t that mean that it is somewhat trivial to find all the censorship in the model and prune it to create an uncensored model? Just ask it for all of the things it cannot say, in hex, and reply, in hex.
mickdarling··on Show HN: Ultra-portable Gantt chart tool for very regulated environments
I second the annoyance from the "category" being required in the task creation section without having any way to create a category in the task creation section. Creating a category isn't even a heavy lift process in its own creation section, so letting the user create a category in the task creation section should be simple.

It looks like a light weight tool. Thanks.

mickdarling··on LLaMA now goes faster on CPUs
How rude, what do our bathing habits have to do with this? ;-)

But, fair point. The gist I was trying to get across is that I don't even know what a plant smells like to you, and you don't know what a plant smells like to me. Those aren't comparable with any objective data. We make guesses, and we try to get close with our descriptions, which are in words. That's the best we can do and we share our senses. Asking more from computers seems overly picky to me.

mickdarling··on LLaMA now goes faster on CPUs
Well, I have synesthetic smell/color senses, so I don’t even know what other humans experience, nor they me. But, I have described it in detail to many people and they seem to get the idea, and can even predict how certain smells will “look” to me. All that took was using words to describe things.
mickdarling··on LLaMA now goes faster on CPUs
Wait till all the videos ever created are tokenized and ingested into a training dataset. Carpentry techniques are certainly there. The subtleties of parenting maybe harder to derive from that, but maybe lots of little snippets of people’s lives will add up to a general understanding of parenting. There have certainly been bigger surprises in the field.
mickdarling··on Game of Life, simulating itself, infinitely zoomable
Adding one pixel at any level is the equivalent of adding me or infinite numbers of pixels, smaller and smaller levels. However, I think if you add in the pixel in a empty space at its level, it would simply disappear. I don't think it would cause any havoc. But, this is not an actual game of life. This is a PNG of many steps in a game of life. The computation power for actually making it a real game of life would be pretty big.
mickdarling··on Game of Life, simulating itself, infinitely zoomable
Imagination is fun. I'm pretty sure I can make your brain break a little bit more. Imagine they're all looped and there is no bottom level fastest super infinite computer.
mickdarling··on Early Apple Vision Pro adopters alarmed to learn VR porn doesn't work
To control which monitor an app opens on a multi monitor Mac setup. First hover over the dock on the monitor you want the app to open on. Then open the app. It will treat that monitor like its main monitor.
mickdarling··on Disney unveils the HoloTile floor
The patent folks are pointing to is not what this Holotile is made of. The Holotiles are slanted disks that can both rotate around the vertical axis and the slanted axis, with control motors for each tile. The Ultrasonic stuff is for a different use case, though could be integrated into this, it is not the primary motive mechanism.
mickdarling··on Sequential modeling enables scalable learning for large vision models
Has anyone tried using transformers on weather forecasts yet?
mickdarling··on Ask HN: Did Elon/Twitter face any consequences after it stopped paying rent?
For Twitter, his plan is the opposite of hyper growth. He doesn't just plan on bankrupting it, i.e. making Twitter's debts unmanageable for its revenue and assets. No, his plan is to actually ruin the company and any of its remaining brand identity. He has to destroy all potential value there, so nobody else can pick up the pieces and show how much of an idiot he's been.

Also, that has the added value for his investors that no one will be using a revived Twitter to instigate any revolutions in say...somewhere in the Middle East.

mickdarling··on Elevated Errors on API and ChatGPT
Not only are the model weights on the drive, but while everyone was distracted a virus was loaded onto the servers to destroy all other copies on the system. Team two is melting the backups offsite.
mickdarling··on OpenAI's misalignment and Microsoft's gain
Well, they're almost certainly 'not profiting' right now.
mickdarling··on Emmett Shear becomes interim OpenAI CEO as Altman talks break down
This particular board won’t even let ChatGPT help the CEO because they’re afraid there’s a Basilisk hiding in every response.
mickdarling··on OpenAI negotiations to reinstate Altman hit snag over board role
I had ChatGPT give me some proposals for screenplays.

My favorite was Rainbow MosAIc, a Rashomon style film taking place mainly from Friday to Monday. It played with all the different potential motivations and theories. It did a half decent metaphor with representing the different points of view via the different video conferencing cameras.

mickdarling··on GPTs: Custom versions of ChatGPT
Well, they tried to put a government sponsored moat in the way of other people building AI companies that would be competing with them. Thankfully, they mostly seem to have whiffed the ball on that one. This plan of theirs to monetize the creation of agents and other tools that take advantage of their underlying infrastructure is a good secondary kind of moat. Because, if your tool relies on their underlying infrastructure, even if you could build something different, the infrastructure is required. This may be a "less-evil" way to keep them building things and making tools available without completely locking out competition.
mickdarling··on One sleepless night can rapidly reverse depression for several days in mice
I think I’ve been self “medicating” this way for at least 30 years.
mickdarling··on Show HN: A virtual office for remote work
You might want to try setting it up as a virtual co-working site for demo purposes. Set up little virtual offices for people working in various kinds of projects, with the acknowledgment that they can be talked to if they put up a little green flag or something. That way you can be open and broadly allow people to demo it, and at the same time get used to the interface.
