michalhosna··on Volkswagen started blocking GrapheneOS users
> their ICE cars are notorious for being unreliable compared to the Japanese car-makers.

I always read this online, but my personal experience in EU doesn't match that at all in quite a sample of people and cars over the last ~15 years. At least not for older cards. The reliability after 100k km seems to be somewhat similar.

The repairability of VW-group stuff in 3rd party services is soo much better and cheaper. The WV-group is huge and many models across the brands share same parts and full engines. There exist non-OEM alternatives and people know how to fix those cars.

I have never bought new car. But driving anything but VW got expensive fast.

Toyota cars can have bespoke parts even between different months of the same year for the same model. Continuous improvement isn't really that cool for cars.

michalhosna··on Vacuum bricked after user blocks data collection – user mods it to run anyway
I am super happy with Valetudo.

Since the robots got cameras and microphones, it's a no-go for me to have it in my home connected to some cloud.

It's little bit challenging to orient oneself in the project (tip: read a couple of the last release notes), but once you do, it's great.

I bought a new robot vacuum that was specifically recommended by the Valetudo project (Dreame L10s Pro Ultra Heat). The rooting was straightforward and non-destructive. The robot works great.

And the usage is much better even for non-developer people (i.e. my wife), as the UI is simple, not constantly changing under your hands, no ads, no upseling. It's a tool as it should be.

michalhosna··on Vacuum bricked after user blocks data collection – user mods it to run anyway
You can then cut the robot off the internet completely.

Which you cant do with the 1st party apps. This alone is enough for me.

The private builder is not great, but the reason are understandable, it is what it is.

michalhosna··on Nokia 5110 – Back from the Dead (2022)
> The Nokia 5110 is a 2G telephone, meaning it uses the original 2G mobile network to communicate. This network has long been decommissioned in most western countries, including Australia.

In Europe, 3G is shutting down, but 2G as a fallback seems to be staying for years to come.

> However, 2G networks were still available as of 2023 in most parts of the world, while notably excluding the majority of carriers in North America, East Asia, and Australasia.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2G

AFAIK, in the US, T-Mobile still has a 2G network.

michalhosna··on Pulling MikroTik into the Limelight Demystifying and Jailbreaking RouterS
It is a feature with warning everywhere. You'll need physical access to the device to enable docker.

I think is still a very nice feature to release even if it's no complete and fully secure yet.

michalhosna··on Rust Design Patterns as a Book
Using private fields you can more precisely control the “private scope”. #[non_exhaustive] is “crate scoped”, it does not apply limits for use in the same crate.

Private fields are by default module scoped, and can be tweaked. So you can limit the use even in the same crate.

michalhosna··on Let’s Encrypt comes up with workaround for abandonware Android devices
How many devices are running iOS8 or older vs 7.1.1 or older?

iOS8 released 2014. Newest iPhone that is stuck on iOS8 or older is iPhone 4 from 2010.

Android 7.1.1 released 2016, many devices without any upgrade provided. There are Android phones from 2016 + 2017 that are stuck at 7.1.

Apple devices does not have the same problem.

(Android upgrade paths are super sad, you almost have to buy new phone every year to stay updated)

michalhosna··on Western Digital is trying to redefine the word “RPM”
This one is wrong on the OS side of thigs.

KB = Kilobyte, which from SI definition of kilo means 10^3.

KiB = Kibibyte, was formaly defined later by IEC in 1998 as 2^10

OSes (Windows/Mac/Linux), are the ones doing it wrong, using 2^10 internaly, but presenting using SI prefixes.

michalhosna··on Cloudflare outage on July 17, 2020
Nope, not at all. Read the damn thing. They tested it, the thing was correct, it overloded cpu, it wasn’t configuration mistake.
michalhosna··on Rust Is Surprisingly Good as a Server Language
Agreed. I am not saying that rust is best for everything. I think, that languages are just tools, and you should use the best tool for the job, there should not be fanboyism in this. The bigger your toolbox the better.

I just don't agree with statements about memory safety and speed. The thing is much more complex. I think simply stating "Use the best tool for the job" is much better than showing bad examples.

Because everybody needs memory safety and wants speed. Nobody wants to write unsafe slow programs (Well, I HOPE). Nobody wants to drops either of those requirements. When you drop those requirements, it's because of tradeoffs (I think memory safety shouldn't ever be dropped, yes use GC lang if you want to, but in 2020 memory safety should be a very hard requirement)

michalhosna··on Rust Is Surprisingly Good as a Server Language
Yes, you need memory safety, everyone needs memory safety.

And if you can write program in very fast language, why not? There doesn’t have to be need. Just no reason not to

michalhosna··on The Hardest Program I've Ever Written – How a code formatter works (2015)

Yep, well, dartfmt is almost non-configurable, without custom rules.

Because consistency over everything.

One of the greatest frustration trying to setup flutter in production for me. And no other formatter for dart I know of.

The configuration will change, all formatters I know added configuration eventually, but man!.
