michaelgrosner2··on Moscow retaliates against Western sanctions with export bans
Look to how North Korea is doing. They're also a client state of China. They (kinda) survive. Russia will too.
michaelgrosner2··on SpaceX reprioritized to cyber defense and overcoming signal jamming
He’s a free speech absolutist who agreed with the SEC to have his tweets pre-screened by lawyers. It’s funny how much people on this site eat up anything remotely contrarian sounding from this guy.
michaelgrosner2··on Ask HN: Parents, what are you doing for school this fall?
We have a 3 year old in NJ (suburb of NYC). His pediatrician and my wife's doc both recommend he go in-person to his preschool. So far schools are re-opening but are 3 days a week instead of 4, with staggered drop off times. We are preparing for a shutdown a few weeks in by lining up a pod of 4 other kids and a teacher.

I honestly think that our area of NJ has a good a chance of making it through in-person for the long-term due to being so slammed by it at first & the pro-social reaction from most of our neighbors.

michaelgrosner2··on Stress That Doesn't Pay: The Commuting Paradox (2004) [pdf]
That is absolutely wrong. I take a train for ~50mins and walk ~10mins. I used to just do the ~10min walk. Work/Life was so much better when I just did the walk. Sure I can read and listen to podcasts and play phone games, but what I'd really like to be doing is be with my wife and son, or really just not in transit.
michaelgrosner2··on Facebook has struggled to hire talent since the Cambridge Analytica scandal
I work in finance (a trading firm, not a bank). In a way it's freeing to admit to yourself and to your coworkers that all you really care about is making money. No one's deluded thinking they're changing the world by selling options like FAANGs think they are by harvesting personal data.

It's not like we're making the world better but we're not actively harming it.

michaelgrosner2··on CoinTracker raises $1.5M to make tracking cryptocurrency investments easy
Whoops, I conflated Cointracker.io (https://www.cointracker.io/tax/plans) with Cointracking.info. Sorry!
michaelgrosner2··on CoinTracker raises $1.5M to make tracking cryptocurrency investments easy
EDIT: Wrote this on my phone where I confused Cointracker with Cointracking

I had something like 50k+ transactions last year. Cointracking wouldn’t create a 8949 for me because their servers couldn’t handle a dataset that large, but they could create a capital gains CSV file that was super easy for my acccountant to sum up a few columns and make the 8949. That said, their very high transaction count plans are $1000+, which seems insane. Through a bug they had interfacing with HitBtc I was able to get the CSV for free, but next year I doubt I’ll use this service at that high price.

michaelgrosner2··on NHL stunner: A 36-year-old accountant who has never played pro stars in win
I played hockey all through college as a forward and a couple times have thrown on goalie equipment just to try it out after practice. I have found that being a goalie is a completely different skill set than being a skater, it's almost like you are playing a different sport. It's all about playing angles, body positioning, quick reflexes, and spatial awareness - those skills are important for skaters but we usually focus on play formation, north/south speed, agility, and passing.

"If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer."
michaelgrosner2··on Data Classes for Java
In C# 6, using properties is actually slightly less verbose, "public int Foo { get; }" vs "public readonly int Foo;". Also, you can easily slap an interface around your data class if you need to later. So my thinking has switched when writing new C# -- why not use a property?
michaelgrosner2··on Tech workers worry about age discrimination at age 40: Study
Why would it? He will never face any sort of age discrimination; he's got so much money that his grandchildren's grandchildren will never need to look for work.
michaelgrosner2··on Area code 710
Is there anywhere else to read more about these kinds of special phone numbers? Something about the current state of phreaking?
michaelgrosner2··on Can America's Farms Survive the Threat of Deportations?
Of course they could survive - they'll just have to raise prices accordingly. So far the American system has prioritized cheaper food over paying workers a decent wage, it seems like now we're on the trend to reverse that.
michaelgrosner2··on Ask HN: What are the most important problems in your industry?

michaelgrosner2··on Reasons to Use Elixir in Finance
No type safety? Not on the JVM, CLR, or C++? No statistical libraries? No FIX implementation?

In my world (derivatives market making) those four make the language complete non-starters. Firms in the trading world are quite risk-adverse, even F# and Scala can be steep asks. It's a shame though, Erlang would make a really nice home in the finance world.

michaelgrosner2··on Amazon launches same day delivery for Prime customers
Have you tried Instacart or FreshDirect? (I believe FreshDirect only works in the NYC area)
michaelgrosner2··on A web-reading bot made millions on the options market
I've spoke to a few people who's jobs are to be on top of these sorts of trades and they said the most interesting part of these trades are that the moves precede the jump in the stock. You look at the market data, the options prices pop before the stock price. This is interesting because the options market is almost by definition slower than stock markets (not just because of the presence of HF firms in the underlying markets, but think of Black-Scholes - one of the inputs to the model is the stock price). Many firms aren't yet prepared for this sort of activity, but they'll plug that hole.
michaelgrosner2··on Coinbase – Exchange API
No way. Kraken doesn't even have a real-time feed. The best I've ever seen is HitBtc or Coinsetter. Those two are the closest to Wall Street grade APIs out there (demo environments, real-time API agnostic of protocol, colocation, etc). From a brief glance, this Coinbase exchange API is close.

michaelgrosner2··on First impressions using Julia
I've been spoiled by the IPython Notebook. Once Julia has an equivalent/full support of the IPyNB and a Pandas equivalent, I'm all in on Julia.
