michaelgrafl··on What are you supposed to do with old clothes?
None of my clothes are perfectly fine unless I've hardly ever worn them.

The disposal of unworn clothes is probably a result of the fast fashion industry. But other than that clothes still get worn out and need to get replaced.

I wish I could repair and recolor all my clothes to make them look decent again, but I just can't.

michaelgrafl··on OnlyFans bribed Meta to put porn stars on terror watchlist: lawsuits
You should be able to ban him from your website. But not all other websites on the Internet.
michaelgrafl··on Look at median, and not mean GDP per capita
Komm, wir essen, Opa.

Komm, wir essen Opa.

michaelgrafl··on Ask HN: Am I incompotent for web development?
Sounds like a typical workday during the first few months of a software developer's carreer to me.
michaelgrafl··on Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars
It's horror as well, if I remember correctly.
michaelgrafl··on “The joy of sharing has been driven from me“
Being disappointed and being rude are two different things.
michaelgrafl··on “The joy of sharing has been driven from me“
Well, they're gamers. Not that anything's wrong with playing video games, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're on average less mature than the general population.

I think I'll play through the first two parts with my children and if they're interesed I'll get this one as well.

michaelgrafl··on Mouse Heaven or Mouse Hell?
Fucking hell did I just read?

I've just read Flowers for Algernon again a few weeks ago. Don't pull my heart strings like that.

michaelgrafl··on ‘Anti-hunger’ molecule forms after exercise, scientists discover
I'm the same. After weight lifting I get a craving for nutritious foods and a disgust of highly processed foods.
michaelgrafl··on What is the web revival?
I have fond memories of the web 1.0, but I have no need for a revival of its aesthetics.

What I long for is a space with no commercial interests or social media agenda, but one that exists for sharing stuff for the sake of self-expression and non-gamified exchange/shooting the shit with like-minded peers.

michaelgrafl··on How to stay informed without getting paralyzed by bad news
I completely agree, and I'd like to add that reading good books feels contemplative and enriching as well. In other words: it feels healthy.
michaelgrafl··on Ask HN: What's the most stable form of digital storage?
I'd prefer a mobile solution. Something I can just put into a box and forget about. Someone else can than stumble upon it and be able to read it.

Basically like a box of photographs. But I know that's a foolish dream to have.

michaelgrafl··on Things I sort of believe about making music
That's playback latency. But if monitoring latency is too high, you get sloppy playing.

That's only relevant if you monitor through your audio interface, of course.

Also, I'm not sure if all DAWs have always compensated playback latency the way you describe. But I agree that it shouldn't be a problem in general.

michaelgrafl··on Ask HN: What's the most stable form of digital storage?
What if I don't want to backup stuff, but archive and then forget about it?

Edit: Oh, and I want it to keep existing after I'm no longer alive.

michaelgrafl··on Why Germany won’t keep its nuclear plants open
I went to school in Austria in the 80s/90s, too.

I remember reading "The Children of Schewenborn" in school and being really disturbed by it. Pretty sure I wasn't alone in that.

Good times!

michaelgrafl··on USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness (2021)
You don't need 8 desks to switch every 5 minutes.
michaelgrafl··on I need to stop being boring
I have three little children but I can't say I feel more or less boring since having the first one.

What I can say, however, is that I'm absolutely thrilled when I watch my kids watch Home Alone while they go crazy with scream and laughter at Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern getting physically abused by an eight year old with booby traps that would be lethal in real life.

michaelgrafl··on Design of This Website (2021)
I think notafraudster might be suggesting that you're lacking self-awareness because you seem very defensive when it comes to your design decisions instead of really listening to people's complaints.

Just as an example, I find right aligned text hard to read, no matter your rational behind it. Might be because I'm not used to it, but who is?

michaelgrafl··on Are you a baby? A litmus test
In the short-term avoiding overwhelming feelings can sometimes be necessary to deal with something else that is more urgent, or to simply not go insane. In the long run you can't avoid them without some bad consequences.

And while our feelings may be vast and bottomless, they are usually finite in type. Almost any unpleasant feeling can be traced back to our fear for survival.

michaelgrafl··on USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness (2021)
I have multiple desks. Each of them has their own docking station.

The only things that move around are my laptop and I. I don't want to carry around a desktop computer and plug in power, screens, and USB hub every time I switch desks.

michaelgrafl··on USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness (2021)
My laptop has enough ports. But I don't want to plug them all out and in again when taking it from one desk to another one.
michaelgrafl··on I don't like computers (2016)
That's a great explanation and one I'm going to steal.
michaelgrafl··on Microwave ovens and their hazards
In my case the dishwasher's program cycle got stuck and it kept heating up the water till it had all evaporated.

I would usually nudge it along when it got stuck, but that time I had been out and forgot about it. I would have never expected that to happen but in hindsight I feel pretty stupid for not replacing the dishwasher immediately when it started acting up.

michaelgrafl··on Microwave ovens and their hazards
Yep. Happened to me. Came home with my wife after visiting my brother and the house was full of smoke.

Thankfully no flames that could spread.

michaelgrafl··on Typography is impossible (2016)
Isn't that what we're doing already? I don't notice a lot of creative font choices these days. More than in the days of Verdana, Arial, and Times; but not by much.

The only sites with more daring typography seem to be artist portfolios or band websites. If there were still a culture of handmade amateur websites I guess we'd have more outsider art variety. But I don't really see it.

michaelgrafl··on Deno Is Webby
Yes. I work on applications that run for a long time in the browser with many subframes. The beforeunload event helps us clean up things and manage our applications' states better.
michaelgrafl··on Loudness War
The other replies aren't incorrect. But I think the main reason is out of fear that other music tracks sound louder in a club which would make them feel more exciting.

This is kind of repeating with playlists now. Not all services normalize perceived loudness across tracks (e.g. Spotify web player).

michaelgrafl··on Ask HN: Moscow Exchange
No it wasn't. I only realized after reading the description on the website itself. I'm on a break at work, and it feels funky to have this website doing its thing from here.
michaelgrafl··on CSS Gradients that avoid the “gray dead zone”
It's also dishonest in the sense that gradients from bright yellow to bright blue or other combos that produce a grey deadzone are probably pretty hard to find in the wild.

I've tried the gradient generator, and I found it actually a bit difficult to pick colors that produced a significant grey zone.

michaelgrafl··on Linux Has Grown into a Viable PC Gaming Platform and the Steam Stats Prove It
Not mandatory, but the default settings are a bit unfortunate.
