michael_fine··on Ask HN: What is your full stack?
Heroku | Node | Hapi | Postgres/Redis/Neo4j | React.js | Bootstrap
michael_fine··on Ask HN: What were some good MOOCs you participated in in 2013?
Intro to Machine Learning on Coursera was pretty great, just the right level of difficulty for a novice high schooler.
michael_fine··on Developer and Power Users Tool List for Windows
Does anyone know of a list similar in scale and scope for Mac users?
michael_fine··on Are you more likely to cast the deciding vote or die on your way to the polls?
That's the problem, you can't make a convincing argument on an individual basis without invoking altruism, because this seems like an example of tragedy of the commons.
michael_fine··on Tell HN: DC Tech Meetup 9/24/2013
I'm going, also taking a friend to introduce her to the tech scene.
michael_fine··on Ask HN: What is the best fiction book you've ever read?
A Song of Ice and Fire
michael_fine··on Ask HN: If you weren't coding for a living, what would you like to be doing?
I always loved cooking, but the long hours, high stress, and low wages turned me off from becoming a chef.
michael_fine··on Where can I find smart people to beta test an iOS puzzle game?
I'd also love to test/promote the game, email is in my profile.
michael_fine··on Catching up with Watsi: Y Combinator’s first non-profit graduate
With YCombinators investment in Watsi, is it a charity investment, or do they actually intend to make money off Watsi, and if so, how?
michael_fine··on Ask HN: How can I improve my personal website
Unfortunately, I'm not yet 18, which prevents me from taking part in SoC.

michael_fine··on General Failure: How the American military rewards failure at the highest ranks
The hedgehog strategy there worked, brilliantly, but it is a strategy, a strategy designed around not losing. In the case of the American military, most of our missions now have specific aims that can't be accomplished by simply avoiding disasters.
michael_fine··on I am a 14 year old programmer. I'm stuck.
Hey, I'm 15 and feel like I was just in your position. Emails in my profile, if you'd like to talk, or you can Skype me at michaelhfine
michael_fine··on Show HN: Tracking voter discussion of the Presidential debates
Also, filtering options would be great, for example only viewing tweets from independents, or only ones that mention Romney.
michael_fine··on Show HN: Tracking voter discussion of the Presidential debates
I love the whole concept and execution, except I think the tweets should scroll by slightly slower, as sometimes you don't have time to read a tweet before it disappears.
michael_fine··on Looking to Meet Cool Young Coders in the Bay Area
Hi, I'm Michael Fine, a 15 year old web developer. I'm not it the bay area, but maybe we could talk? My email is in my profile.
michael_fine··on Fizzbuzz isn't a coding test
The point of Fizzbuzz is to save time and money weeding out the clear incompetents so you don't have to take time to interview them later.
michael_fine··on Fizzbuzz isn't a coding test
It's not coding, in the strictest sense that it has no computer science or is solely syntactic, but it works at weeding out people who can't build anything. At least this level of analytical thinking is necessary for any programming task, and therefore Fizzbuzz serves its purpose.
michael_fine··on If you had an app that told you the truth, would you use it?
Yes, but the first one is still universal, just it's assumed that we are talking about base 10.
michael_fine··on Alex Payne, Peter Seibel, Jessica McKellar, more are Hacker School Residents
What's the youngest age of any student you've ever had? I'm a high school student but I'd love to do this over the summer?
michael_fine··on Ask HN: Pitch Here Your Most Recent Ideas
A better version control system. I really like git a lot of the time, but a good deal of the time I get really frustrated with the complexity, and it was even more frustrating when I was learning it.

I want a version control system that I can pick up and use, one that is intuitive to use and doesn't get in the way of writing. It would be similar to word's track changes, but with branches.

I've been giving this some thought, but I don't even know if it is technically possible, let alone feasible.

michael_fine··on A Proposal To Improve Hacker News
I find that paradoxically, the biggest problem with Hacker News right now is the hot algorithm we use. It's great for bringing good stories to the attention of the community and having a burst of short lived discussion over those stories, and then dying out. What it's not great for is long term discussions.

For example, with Quora, when someone answers a question, or posts a comment, you never care how long ago it was posted, because there are notifications, and the front page is based on what you follow, not how popular the questions are.

This is a hard problem to fix, but a couple suggestions I have are to improve the threads feature, such that it resembles a real notification bar. Secondly, I think a new page should help, a mixture between the front page, and the saved stories, which shows active discussions, and an emphasis on one's that you have upvoted.

I think those might help reduce the ephemerality of the discussions here.

michael_fine··on Another Spanking for Apple from Judge Posner
That's one of the paradoxes of Euclidean geometry, where a line/line segment is made up of an infinite number of points, but those points have no length or width, and infinity times 0 is still 0, so technically a line should have no length. Clearly, it does not.
michael_fine··on Another Spanking for Apple from Judge Posner
Actually, it's not true in mathematics either. A line is something which has one and only one dimension, and a point is something which has no dimension. A zero length line would not be a line, as it would have fewer than one dimension. So, there is no such thing as a zero length line.
michael_fine··on SwipeGood (YC W11) Is Now Elastic, A Sales-As-A-Service Platform For Startups
I'm still getting it.
michael_fine··on Sublime Text 2.0 Released
Similarly, that's why almost always, the first thing I do when building a web app is to design it, because it makes those 40+ hours far more enjoyable to be staring at an attractive program.
michael_fine··on The best investment I never made
What a lot of people miss when comparing the returns of a home to say, the stock market, is that a home also provides a place to live. Of course a home would return less, because if it didn't the price would quickly shoot up because people see the inherent value in having your (lackluster) investment put a roof over your head.
michael_fine··on Show HN: A new way to view IAmA's on Reddit
Also, the hover effect is very distracting.
michael_fine··on Startup Accelerator Fail: Most Graduates Go Nowhere
Isn't measuring by average valuation a little dissonant with how the valuations play out? If startup valuations follow a power law, and most of the money is made from a few successful exits, wouldn't it make more sense to judge incubators by say, their top 10%, while also showing the total number of startups for comparison?
michael_fine··on Why Smart People Are Stupid
Why's that? What makes it a nightmare?
