mi_lk··on Teaching C (2016)
what should be the replacement for C stdlib?
mi_lk··on Apple wants AI to run directly on its hardware instead of in the cloud
FYI that app is 3.3 GB on iOS, not your typical app size
mi_lk··on Tell HN: Microsoft.com added 192.168.1.1 to their DNS record
for uninitiated (me), why is it bad?
mi_lk··on To be great, be good, repeatably (2019)
Guilty. It's a lesson I have to relearn every once in a while
mi_lk··on OpenAI suspends ByteDance's account after it used GPT to train its own AI model
the overwhelming support of him across HN/Twitter (circle jerk) really rubs me the wrong way and I just can't take Sam Altman seriously anymore
mi_lk··on Let it snow in your terminal
oh I love this!
mi_lk··on Intel CEO: 'The entire industry is motivated to eliminate the CUDA market'
You don't know Pat Gelsinger do you?
mi_lk··on 2nd Batch of the A16Z Open Source AI Grant
How much is the grant, it doesn't seem to be disclosed?
mi_lk··on Whisper: Nvidia RTX 4090 vs. M1 Pro with MLX
> The Nvidia card is far superior.

I mean, you're probably right, but MLX framework was released just a week ago so maybe we don't really know what it's capable of yet.

mi_lk··on SVG Tutorial
What’s the usual practice — do people code in SVG directly or they draw in for example Figma and generate a SVG file?
mi_lk··on Gemini AI
What's the difference between Bard and Gemini? One is text and the other is multi-modal?
mi_lk··on Ask HN: Where do you live? What's good or bad about it?
does "West" give you some status or something? what's the context
mi_lk··on Oxford Word of the Year
"Gen Z shit" as I'd like to categorize it, no offense
mi_lk··on Apple pulls plug on Goldman credit-card partnership
Thousands? What do you buy if you don't mind sharing?
mi_lk··on Keras 3.0
Sure, yet that's one tweet and his tone is pretty telling if you ask me. Disregard if you don't believe, I'm not making it up
mi_lk··on Understanding Deep Learning
I guess this message is delivered by an AI scientist, sure.

It's almost self-exploratory that when you hit a roadblock in practice you go back to foundations, and good people should aim to do both. In that case I don't see where ML engineer/scientist bifurcation comes from except for some to feel good about themselves

mi_lk··on New CRISPR systems hold promise for genome editing
what are other two genes for?
mi_lk··on Things you're allowed to do (2020)
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2011/10/03/personal-best

It's you who are naive if you really think the majority of those 7xx employees care more about safe AGI than their own equity upside
mi_lk··on OpenAI negotiations to reinstate Altman hit snag over board role
It for sure doesn't have sama's name on it. The point stands
mi_lk··on Ilya Sutskever "at the center" of Altman firing?
This. VCs/tech bros are framing this as a coup except when you approach from this angle it all makes sense
mi_lk··on Three senior researchers have resigned from OpenAI
he sure did https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38312704
mi_lk··on Privacy is priceless, but Signal is expensive
> the stack is not really optimal (last I heard it was java)

how's java relevant here?

mi_lk··on The Unix timestamp will begin with 17 this Tuesday
internet is really wonderful sometimes
mi_lk··on Ask HN: Buying Yourself a Job
Not anymore not in this economy I'm afraid
mi_lk··on Black 4.0
> Black 3.0 with 99.6% is nowhere near close to Vantablack with 99.965%

Curious, under what circumstances will this 0.365% be practically important?

mi_lk··on 2023 Hugo Awards
Little surprised that such a renowned sci-fi award is hosted on a plain WordPress site. A welcome surprise.
mi_lk··on Unified versus Split Diff
It works! Can't seem to find the option in GitHub README or the documentation though
mi_lk··on Unified versus Split Diff
only side-by-side view, unfortunate for my unified view taste
mi_lk··on Ask HN: Work for mgr who's never heard of Joel Spolsky?
100 this. Some people seriously need to get out of bubbles they put themselves in
