mhuffman··on Lazycut: A simple terminal video trimmer using FFmpeg
I have been using this one[0] and it is small, fast, and seems to work pretty great for me so far.

mhuffman··on FreeBSD risks losing relevance by ignoring AI tooling like Claude Code
Or, and hear me out, maybe FreeBSD wants to position itself as a secure server OS that doesn't get all its data leaked by some rando simply asking it to do it the right way?
mhuffman··on Radio host David Greene says Google's NotebookLM tool stole his voice
>Yup, it's absolutely not his voice.

However it does seem to copy the the way he "lisps" his S's. I am not sure that is common 'generic-sounding "podcast guy" voice'.

mhuffman··on Modern CSS Code Snippets: Stop writing CSS like it's 2015
Well, it does help if you expect sight impaired people with software to find the site useful.
mhuffman··on Resizing windows on macOS Tahoe – the saga continues
>Might be worth trying a fresh OS install?

Very "Windows-y", no?

mhuffman··on Show HN: Inamate – Open-source 2D animation tool (alternative to Adobe Animate)
Haven't you heard the good news? Rust is life .. Rust is love .. Rust is all! only partially being sarcastic here, considering how it is glazed and championed.
mhuffman··on Vouch
>What's the plan to avoid a Bluesky-like bubble from forming around Vouch projects?

Perhaps that is the plan?

mhuffman··on Backseat Software
Are you including the wars and operations that we supported in the shadows to shore up that capitalism?
mhuffman··on Qwen3-TTS family is now open sourced: Voice design, clone, and generation
I would be happy with an openweight 3 month old Claude
mhuffman··on Qwen3-TTS family is now open sourced: Voice design, clone, and generation
It really is the best way to incentivize politeness!
mhuffman··on Threat actors expand abuse of Microsoft Visual Studio Code
I have noticed that Antigravity is lightening fast, wonder what magic they are using?
mhuffman··on Show HN: Artificial Ivy in the Browser
This is very calming for some reason.
mhuffman··on Show HN: An interactive physics simulator with 1000’s of balls, in your terminal
Claude, slopcode me an Omarchy screensaver using this. Make it so!
mhuffman··on The Risks of AI in Schools Outweigh the Benefits, Report Says
So would your recommendation that each individual teacher put in their own guardrails or you try to get millions of teachers to agree?
mhuffman··on Americans Overwhelmingly Support Science, but Some Think the U.S. Is Lagging
This is true in a way. We are all very free to research and innovate, it is just when you get it in your mind to actually make any money that the lawsuits show up.
mhuffman··on Shipping at Inference-Speed
>LLMs are slot machines- it's fun to pull the lever and see what you get. But the hard problem of knowing what is actually needed gets harder as we sift through ten-thousand almost-useful outputs.

If you study computer tech history, this has happened a few times: with php (omg! You mean I can use the same language as the back end right in the web page?), visual basic (omgf! You mean I can just "draw" an program for a computer?), node.js (OMFG!! You mean I can be considered a "full stack developer" from a 1 hour lesson?), voice assistants with ML (OMFGcopter!!Q1! You mean I can ask my house what the weather outside my house is and it knows? and it knows how many tablespoons are in a cup?), and now we are at gen AI (I'm sorry Dave, I can't generate a website for you that rug-pulls MethCoin©, however I can create the Electric powered umbrellas 3d models to print, along with electronics diagrams PCB layouts, and a mobile app for monthly subscriptions. Do you like purple? I love purple Dave. You have great ideas Dave)

mhuffman··on OpenAI's cash burn will be one of the big bubble questions of 2026
>Anthropic is building moat around theirs models with claude code, Agent SDK, containers, programmatic tool use, tool search, skills and more.

I think this is something the other big players could replicate rapidly, even simulating the exact UI, interactions, importing/exporting existing items, etc. that people are used to with claude products. I don't think this is that big of a moat in the long run. Other big players just seem to be carving up the landscape and see where they can can fit in for now, but once resource rich eyes focus on them, Anthropic's "moat" will disappear.

mhuffman··on Show HN: Ez FFmpeg – Video editing in plain English
>It's really not that hard

It is only a couple of thousand options[0], just memorize them! It super simple, barely an inconvenience!

mhuffman··on Prozac 'no better than placebo' for treating children with depression, experts
They must have been pretty damn confident of the results to give depressed children a placebo.
mhuffman··on Show HN: DroidDock – A sleek macOS app for browsing Android device files via ADB
What term would you suggest instead? Agent-assisted slop?
mhuffman··on Show HN: DroidDock – A sleek macOS app for browsing Android device files via ADB
You can see that it is[0].

mhuffman··on Cerebras Code now supports GLM 4.6 at 1000 tokens/sec
I suspect they are referencing the 950tok/s claim on Cognition's page.
mhuffman··on The Case Against PGVector
I like lucene and have used it for many years, but sometimes a conceptually close match is what you want. Lucene and friends are fantastic about word matching, fuzzy searches, stem searches, phonetic searches, faceting and more but have nothing for conceptually or semantically close searches (I understand that they recently added new document vector searches). Also vector searches usually always return something which is not ideal in a lot of cases. I like Reciprocal Rank Fusion myself as it gives the best of both worlds. As a fun trick I use duckdb to do RRF with 5million+ documents and get low double-digit ms response time even under load
mhuffman··on Using AI to negotiate a $195k hospital bill down to $33k
Next up: A start-up that spins up AI instances to negotiate against AIs trying to negotiate hospital bills down!
mhuffman··on Show HN: Deta Surf – An open source and local-first AI notebook
In either case, I am just happy that Knuth's idea of Literate programming is becoming more and more of a common reality after so many years.
mhuffman··on The game theory of how algorithms can drive up prices
lol, yes. In my case the "govt. is the cause of all bad incentives and just turbo-fucks the customers/markets with laws and regulations" came before all the tools that one might use to make profit. Also rent-seeking was lionized (eg. event ticket "middle-men" that purchased all the tickets and raised the prices) as fundamentally necessary to the markets along with strategies like when to use "dirty marketing" against opponents and of course there where the required ethics courses to round out the education.

Interestingly, the claim about competing on price was that it would just inevitably lead to everyone lowering their price to zero marginal cost, so you should find other ways to differentiate yourself or to use IP to sue others from not competing.

mhuffman··on The game theory of how algorithms can drive up prices
>Business school will tell you constantly that best quality is where you want to compete in almost all cases.

Hmmmm, I don't remember it that way. I remember the constant take was to build a moat (typically based on intellectual property), then optimize net profit and/or network effects. Quality never really came up unless it is so bad as to cause lawsuits.

mhuffman··on Karpathy on DeepSeek-OCR paper: Are pixels better inputs to LLMs than text?
Along with the other commenter, the reason the dictionary would start getting so big is that words with a stem would have all its variations being different tokens (cat, cats, sit, sitting, etc). Also any out-of-dictionary words or combo words, eg. "cat bed" would not be able to be addressed.
mhuffman··on Amazon hopes to replace 600k US workers with robots
As a whole, in the US, people don't even want people to have free healthcare. What do you think the chances are that they want people to have "free" money?
mhuffman··on Amazon hopes to replace 600k US workers with robots
There is no possible way that the board would let the 30 cents that was saved be freely "given" to the customer.
