mhuffman··on Exploring PostgreSQL 18's new UUIDv7 support
>why you'd do either instead of just serial/bigserial, which has always been my goto. Did I miss something?

So the common response is sequential ID crawling by bad actors. UUIDs are generally un-guessable and you can throw them into slop DBs like Mongo or storage like S3 as primary identifiers without worrying about permissions or having a clever interested party pwn your whole database. A common case of security through obscurity.

Quick question, is the Day Pong a Master of Karate and friendship For Everyone?

mhuffman··on Write the damn code
>Yes, you could write the code yourself, but keep in mind that this activity is going away for most engineers (but not for all) in 1 - 2 years.

I'm not saying that it definitely isn't going to happen, but there is a loooong way to go for non-FAANG medium and small companies to let their livelihoods ride on AI completely.

>I think a better advice would be to learn reading/reviewing an inordinate amount of code, very fast. Also heavy focus on patterns, extremely detailed SDLC processes, TDD, DDD, debugging, QA, security reviews, etc...

If we get to a point in 1-2 years where AI is vibe-coding at a high mostly error-free level, what makes you think that it couldn't review code as well?

mhuffman··on Leading computer science professor says 'everybody' is struggling to get jobs
There is a loophole where companies hire H1B-type employees in their offices in another country and then move them to the US offices.
mhuffman··on Zed's Pricing Has Changed: LLM Usage Is Now Token-Based
No one is going to give up token-based pricing. The main players can twiddle their models to make anything any amount of tokens they choose.
mhuffman··on Show HN: Run Qwen3-Next-80B on 8GB GPU at 1tok/2s throughput
This particular one may not work on M chips, but the model itself does. I just tested a different sized version of the same model in LM Studio on a Macbook Pro, 64GB M2 Max with 12 cores, just to see.

Prompt: Create a solar system simulation in a single self-contained HTML file.

qwen3-next-80b (MLX format, 44.86 GB), 4bit 42.56 tok/sec , 2523 tokens, 12.79s to first token

- note: looked like ass, simulation broken, didn't work at all.

Then as a comparison for a model with a similar size, I tried GLM.

GLM-4-32B-0414-8bit (MLX format, 36.66 GB), 9.31 tok/sec, 2936 tokens, 4.77s to first token

- note: looked fantastic for a first try, everything worked as expected.

Not a fair comparison 4bit vs 8bit but some data. The tok/sec on Mac is pretty good depending on the models you use.

>There's significantly less shoplifting now on average than there was in the '80s or '90s.

possibly, but are you seriously comparing now to the height of the crack epidemic in the US?

Some people might say that the browser you are using to look at your webapp or ask chatgpt for something is a local-first app ... making it pretty damn popular.

>By the way this article is not just a rehash of Wikipedia like most stuff. Somebody did research.

Maybe. The seven sentences that are not paywall blocked didn't give any references and spent 1/4 of that talking about another more well-known ship.

Here is a blog post about the ship. It may or may not be better than the paywalled post.[0]

"Use minimalism to achieve clarity. While you are writing, ask yourself: is it possible to preserve my original message without that punctuation mark, that word, that sentence, that paragraph or that section?"

This is rich, coming from the guy that spends multiple paragraphs describing an empty ditch in the desert.

mhuffman··on YouTube addresses lower view counts which seem to be caused by ad blockers
I am not sure that this example really works. Youtube is happy to give you all the "free lemonade" you want (from videos that aren't really monetizable) but the ones that are, they make onerous to use. I get 20+ ads per day right now from an Internet service that I already use, and get untold ads from products that I would never use. Some of the ads are up to 1 hour in duration. Granted, they mercifully offer a skip button, but it seems to me that the ad is being forced on you, not offered to you. That is the big difference. A funny, engaging ad is not a problem for nearly anyone.
mhuffman··on YouTube addresses lower view counts which seem to be caused by ad blockers
Well that is not a law, and even bringing it up on a site called "Hacker News" makes me almost think you are making a joke that is going over my head.

>From what I hear (pun intended) Noctua makes a great product both functionally and aesthetically

Can confirm. I was unaware of the large difference in different fans that weren't priced far apart previous to a Noctua recommendation. After hearing them in situ beside some other brands it is incredible the difference in sound. I strictly use them on my homelab and the spinning hard-drives make more noise than the fans.

mhuffman··on YouTube addresses lower view counts which seem to be caused by ad blockers
It seems to be sending the same message either way, no? Either not watching them or the ad-blocking reducing their count seems to be the same in the end.
mhuffman··on Meta RayBan AR glasses shows Lumus waveguide structures in leaked video
>Because one of the first apps for it will likely be one that looks at people's faces and immediately digs up everything about them available online. There's already been videos of it working with older tech, so I'm sure it'll work even better now with newer hardware and AI.

The app in question[0]. I would imagine newer hardware and some Palantir APIs would be all you need to do this very reliability.

mhuffman··on Show HN: Pooshit – Sync local code to remote Docker containers
I do believe you, but be honest, both of us could come up with an easy half-dozen names for software that if spoken out loud at work or triggered a filter on the network at the office would have someone explaining to HR what the hell is going on.
mhuffman··on Show HN: Pooshit – Sync local code to remote Docker containers
Useful project. Name that no reasonable company would allow IT department to use. 10 out of 10! It worked for CockroachDB. I hope it turns into a unicorn and I'm not joking about that.
mhuffman··on Boring work needs tension
Ah yes, what most jobs these days lack is tension! Too bored? Get yourself worked up over some other task! What an insight!!!

>If you can’t tackle these at work, do it in your personal projects.

Just gold analysis. Most people in SWE have plenty of personal projects supported by their work managers and encouraged to implement work tasks into personal projects.
