mhoad··on Dart 3
Historically there was always a bit of a funky story about what JS <-> Dart interop looked like that made it not a particularly practical option for most people.

That is about to change however examples here https://youtu.be/yRlwOdCK7Ho 28:30 mark)

But the fact that unlike Typescript it will now also natively target WASM along with the fact that it’s generally a much more pleasant language to use I hope it starts to get much more serious consideration moving forward.

Simple example here looking at Mixins (a fairly basic pattern to describe any kind of a “is-a” rather than a “has-a” relationship in OOP).

Just by way of comparison for a real world example. As far as I know Chrome OS and Chrome itself is more or less all Lit for the UI.

Agree with this comment 100%.

Worth noting that “the happy path” is not the same thing as the “standards compliant path” with Vite which is also a pain in the ass.

Dart itself has also made a huge amount of progress in the last 2-3 years and are days away from probably their most significant upgrade ever.

Dart is at this stage actually a damned good language. Miles in front of TypeScript for example.

When Dart finally gets around to releasing their updated web and JS interop support later this year it is almost certainly about to become my new default there too.

mhoad··on Vercel Service Markup
It’s really not an either / or scenario at all.

There are tons of really good solutions to this problem that are incredibly affordable but they just aren’t popular in the React ecosystem which is once again off doing its own thing seemingly detached from everyone else and trying to just fit the React mental model into any abstraction they come across and patting themselves on the back about innovation in the process.

Honestly React is an actively terrible place to have as your center of the universe when trying to build the kind of app you described. Not to say you can’t or shouldn’t use it but it most certainly shouldn’t be where the core is.

This managed to encapsulate something that has been in the tip of my tongue ever since I first encountered them. That company is just a sea of red flags to me.
mhoad··on A detailed comparison of REST and gRPC
This depends on your language of choice a lot but even still I don’t know how much I agree with it.

It’s not at all obviously wrong on the surface, there is some setup involved in the sense you’re bringing at a minimum one new tool into your build process but you are picking up a LOT in exchange for that trade off from prebuilt client libraries down to an extremely efficient wire format.

RPC using JSON sounds like the worst of both worlds to me. You ended up trading away a huge amounts of the benefits for things like code generation and general efficiency for a pretty reasonably one time setup cost.

Maybe that’s different for the language of your choice I don’t know…

Just in case your not already aware this account you are responding to is very “out there” and hard to take in good faith. It’s just one thing after another of absolutely nonsense points like this.

Maybe you should speak with a little less confidence.

Let me quote from the opening paragraphs of the Wikipedia entry for the source you just quoted:

“ A fringe website,[23] it is known for misleading reporting[24] and sympathetic coverage of authoritarian regimes.[1][15][25] The Grayzone has denied human rights abuses against Uyghurs,[29] promulgated conspiracy theories about Venezuela, Xinjiang, Syria and other regions,[30][31] and promoted pro-Russian propaganda during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.[28] The Grayzone has been described by Commentary as a propaganda shop devoted to pushing pro-Assad, pro-Maduro, pro-Putin, and pro-Hamas narratives.[32]”

Or this section from the Wikipedia entry for the author of that “article”.

“ Blumenthal has contributed to broadcasts on RT (formerly known as Russia Today) on many occasions.[13] In December 2015, during a visit to Moscow presumed by multiple sources to have been paid for by the Kremlin,[19][22] Blumenthal was a guest at RT's 10 Years On Air anniversary party attended by President Vladimir Putin, then-Lieutenant General Michael Flynn of the United States and English politician Ken Livingstone.[19][13][23] In an interview with Tucker Carlson on Fox News in November 2017, Blumenthal defended RT against "the charge that it’s Kremlin propaganda."[13][24]

He has contributed on multiple occasions to Sputnik radio,[22][25] as well as to Iran's Press TV[26][27] and China's CGTN.[28] Blumenthal founded The Grayzone website within a month after his visit to Moscow.[5]”

mhoad··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
It’s really difficult to pretend this is a serious comment.

It’s just so all over the place responding to arguments that no one ever made with a series of facts you seem to have taken from who knows where.

mhoad··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
You are responding to a claim that nobody made and then introducing another “fact” that isn’t actually relevant to the conversation.

The argument isn’t that all murder stops. It’s that it goes down, dramatically when you remove guns from the equation.

mhoad··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
We both understand the concept that the US has more than 1 major social problem at the same time right and that other countries also have comparable levels of gang membership but wildly different murder rates.
mhoad··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
And yet… there’s no vehicular homicide crime wave but 8/10 murders in the country involve a gun https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/02/03/what-the-da...
mhoad··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
The point you seem to be making doesn’t really hold up to even a light level of scrutiny.

There is not any evidence what so ever that a person who might commit a murder with a gun would just use the next available option to them such as a knife. That was something that was just introduced to the discussion as a fact when in reality it’s something you have made up.

In fact it’s immediately clear that to most people they are two very different things precisely because one of them is literally just pushing a button.

There is a reason why the murder rate is 7x higher because the access to guns requires a much lower buy in to commit the act in the first place.

Hence why people argue for stricter gun control laws. Mass access is precisely the problem.

mhoad··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
It’s actually nothing like that at all. People keep bringing it up because the US has the second highest number of gun related deaths of any country in the entire world.

I don’t know what it is but between Apple, Elon, Web3 and Glen Greenwald they all have some of the absolute strangest super fans I’ve ever seen.
