Twitter updates its website logo to Dogecoin

Is this even legal? I remember Elon had a gag order from the SEC about market manipulating tweets. Changing Twitter's logo isn't technically a tweet I guess?

Gotta make that 40 billion back somehow.

Something tells me a guy worth $200 billion doesn’t need to pump and dump doge. I think its merely for fun or a nod to the type of Twitter loyalists he wants to foster

It's a private company

Under a consent decree

AFAIK, Dogecoin isn't a security, so it wouldn't fall under the SEC's purview regardless.

Surely this must at the very least be illegal advertising or something like that. He literally owns one the largest ad platform in the world and sells ads to other people. He then uses his ownership to put an ad for a currency he has stakes in. He doesn’t just put this ad somewhere where other ads goes, but in a very prominent location, visible to all users, even those with ad-blockers, other customers don’t have the option of buying an ad placement like this.

Eloquently put.

My comment was specifically about the connection to the SEC: if Dogecoin isn't a security, then Musk isn't illegally promoting a security or violating other securities laws. Maybe the CFTC would dislike his promotion, but it's not clearly illegal for someone to use one property they own to promote/advertise their other interests as long as it's disclosed (which, as you note, Musk has done with Dogecoin).

This was also rolled out in Europe, and I’m pretty sure there are consumer protection laws there which disallow this type of behavior. A media giant cannot use that media to promote their interest in a privileged position which is not granted to other ads.

> Dogecoin Surges 20% as Doge Replaces Bird Logo on Twitter

Is this how he wants to pay his liabilities?

All these articles saying "Twitter responded with a poop emoji when asked for comment" make me laugh so hard. Apparently they automated their press@twitter.com email to respond with a poop emoji. Actually pretty funny

It’s kind of funny right up until you read a headline like “the shooter posted his manifesto on Twitter, when asked to comment Twitter responded with a poop emoji”

I think they're calling his bluff. If he wants to be that immature, just report it straight down the line.

Unsure if this related, but on the web, my "Following" feed is also now full of tweets from people I don't follow.

Those are probably retweets. it no longer marks retweets as such.

Yeah, you're right. I didn't realize there's currently a bug where retweets aren't labeled.

I thought that's intentional, than a bug.

Context:

Elon Musk asked a U.S. judge on Friday to throw out a $258 billion racketeering lawsuit accusing him of running a pyramid scheme to support the cryptocurrency Dogecoin.

Is this somehow a badly timed April fools joke?

I don't see the logo on the actual twitter site, do you?

Some friends had to do a hard refresh, now they see it.

I still do: https://i.imgur.com/WVTl9Fw.png

I first checked in the app and didn't see any change but checking the website https://twitter.com/ it's definitely on production for me as well.

Oh now I see it after clicking your link. Maybe it was a cache thing.

I see it

I hate living in the future.
