If it's in maintenance mode, suggest they archive* the repo so that it is super clear to everyone.

mhausenblas··on Distributed Named Pipes
Fair point, I suppose. Is https://dcos.io/docs/1.8/administration/installing/local/ an option?
mhausenblas··on Distributed Named Pipes
Define 'normal' :)

Joking aside: since I've used Kafka for the reference implementation it naturally looks very similar, yes but it's really about the semantics. For example, does your 'normal' Kafka consumer start from the beginning or use latest index, etc.

mhausenblas··on Distributed Named Pipes
> ... if the same consumer pulls the same dnpipe again, does it get the same message

No. Each message is delivered at most once. But good point, need to make that clearer!

> Do messages ever get removed from dnpipes without a reset.

No. Again, something I need to clarify as it seems.

> Does pull block, support async completions, or just return an error when no data is available?

It blocks.

> Reset, rather than sending an EOF which passes through the queue, implies that shutdown is either drastic or requires external coordination to empty the queue and stop the sending end before the reset.

I don't follow. Reset empties the underlying queue.

In general, since the consumers start to consume not from the beginning of time (as in Kafka's `--from-beginning`) but wherever they happen to be (that is, in Kafka terminology from `latest` index) this shouldn't be a problem.

I tried to model as close as possible and as it makes sense after the semantics of (local) named pipes. I might have fudged up here but I'm not 100% clear on where :)

Author here. Thanks for the feedback and I agree, a lighter ref impl would be ideal (it's just that I happen to use DC/OS on a daily basis so for me this was the most natural thing to do)

I'm all open for GitHub issues that capture this request and/or PR ;)

mhausenblas··on Ask HN: At what age did you use a computer for the first time?
Mid 80ies (around 10yo), a Schneider CPC464 IIRC

404s for me …

Suggest you listen to this for the pronunciation: https://youtu.be/5Q4huiDcNSs?t=3m23s (it doesn't get more authoritative than that I suppose).
mhausenblas··on Ask HN: How do you manage continuous deployment without containers?
DC/OS [1] supports services (long-running tasks) and jobs (one-offs or scheduled) which don't necessarily have to be container images. See also [2] for a small write-up on this topic.

Can you expand on 5.? I'm not following what you mean by 'need to scale cluster first to scale app'.
mhausenblas··on StackHut: deploy classes as Docker-based microservices
Love it! Similar to AWS Lambda and webtask.io — just one ask: can we please not call this stuff `serverless`?

mhausenblas··on Beware of Open Source Software Zombies
Both you and others made valid points concerning individuals. I will update the post to make the scope clear. And just to clarify this here: I certainly don't feel entitled to anything concerning OSS, no need for an ad hominem ;)
mhausenblas··on Beware of Open Source Software Zombies
Agreed for individuals. For (commercial) organizations I think it is valid. One good citizen in this respect is btw the ASF: http://attic.apache.org/ … clearly flags the dead ;)

Not available under MacOS, yet.
mhausenblas··on Ask HN: Have you settled on a Google Reader replacement?
Feedly here, both on desktop and mobile. Luv it!
mhausenblas··on Google Reader shutting down
Not cool, GOOG. Suppose I'll give NewsBlur a try then.
mhausenblas··on RDF Semantic web research isn't working
Hacker NEWS (?) re an article from 2006? Come on, you can do better ...
mhausenblas··on Tim Berners-Lee's TED Talk: The next Web of open, linked data
I concur. We have largely solved the publishing issue with linked data. Now we aim to realise the read-write Web of Data - http://vimeo.com/3663028 is a screen cast explaining and demoing how this can be done (and this is a grass-rooted, open community project building upon deployed and already used technologies whilst offering a generic processing model - consider signing up and contribute!)

Cheers, Michael

People do it, already. See for example http://esw.w3.org/topic/HCLSIG/LODD/Data

IMHO TimBL did a great job at TED. I dunno where you have seen him stressed out - he certainly enjoyed it. Btw, linked data is mainly about URIs and HTTP and yes RDF (for the data model part) and some lightweight vocabularies such as FOAF, SOIC, Dublin Core, etc. - check out http://webofdata.wordpress.com as well, I blog there about it ;)

Cheers, Michael

PS: To be honest, I was also sort of surprised to see him calling the audience like 'speak after me'. However, I was positively surprised - I really like when people put enthusiasm in things and not only give interesting but boring talks. In that sense I very much support TimBL to continue this (though, maybe not go as far as Steven B. at MS did with his infamous 'monkey dance' ;)
