mh-cx··on GitLab 10.4 released
Thanks. I was afraid to hear something like this.

Being a PHP developer myself it's really hard to believe that resource consumption is obviously treaded with so little priority in the rails/ruby world.

And some attitudes here like "who cares? memory/cpu is cheap nowadays" are in my opinion part of the problem. I'd say, well written software should use as little resources as possible. Probably a habit that comes from my early days on a C64 back in the 80s.

mh-cx··on GitLab 10.4 released
I can only tell what I've experienced. I regularly read the release notes, especially the sections on performance. And with each upgrade I'm hoping so much that we get back to loading times below 1 second (like it was with early GitLab releases).

Unfortunately this is almost never the case: Sometimes the pages load even slower. In the best case there's not much difference. Same goes for memory consumption.

But I understand now that this will always be a problem with rails.

mh-cx··on GitLab 10.4 released
Yeah, and they've promised to work on performance for ages now with almost no improvement.

I run a very small installation with only a couple of projects and some hundred issues on a 4 GB machine. It eats up 2 GB (sigh!!!) - and often still feels extremely slow. I mean 2 Gigabytes!! What for? That's a multitude of all the data I have in the DB there. And then it's not even used for something useful like caching. Some pages take several seconds to load. As a developer that's totally unacceptable to me.

Is ruby really such a mess that it's impossible to run an app with reasonable memory consumption?

mh-cx··on Issue with TLS-SNI-01 and Shared Hosting Infrastructure
Does this basically say, that letsencrypt will no longer work in a virtual hosting setup?

What about existing certs? Can they at least be renewed when they expire?

mh-cx··on Google translates German “halb zwei” to French “deux heures et demie”: 1h off
The ambiguity comes from the problem, when talking to someone from “the other system“. I remember that my “viertel drei“ was misinterpreted as 15.15 by someone, who autocompleted this to “viertel nach drei“ following his system.
mh-cx··on The Battle That Created Germany
Really? May be a generation thing. I'm in my 40s now and we learned about that battle around 6th grade. And this was on a Hauptschule (secondary modern school) where I spent two years.

Also German TV is full of historic documentaries about that time - at lest the public service broadcasters (phoenix, zdf info, arte, etc). Of course you will not notice that if you only follow the private channels.

mh-cx··on Ren: a lightweight data-exchange text format
But in that case, wouldn't “unknown“ be even better? I'm not a native english speaker, though, so I may miss some fine nuances in the meaning of “none“.
mh-cx··on My Journey to a Better Language Learning System
Not sure if it helps, but you're not alone. I'm a quite introvert person and often feel that things that interest me bore others and vice versa. This can be a real problem if you have to communicate.

I'm learning Czech now just for fun for about a year and tried to find tandem partners with an app called Tandem. I had some chat partners but they were text only as I find it much easier to have a conversation this way. Of course this didn't go very well. Most of them stopped responding after a while.

So right now I'm not sure what to try next. I definitely need some “hands on“ experience but don't know how. There really should be more offerings for introverts. I'm sure there's a big market for that.

mh-cx··on The hippocampus as a 'predictive map'
Ok, then please forgive my ignorance. Basically that's what I was asking for (links or sources with deeper informations on the subject).

Of course I made the mistake to use “only“ where it should have been “so much“ or something. Sorry again.

mh-cx··on The hippocampus as a 'predictive map'
Couldn't. Maybe not enough karma.
mh-cx··on The hippocampus as a 'predictive map'
Downvoters please explain what's so stupid about my question.
mh-cx··on The hippocampus as a 'predictive map'
Reading about rewards in AI context makes me wonder, why current AI only focuses on the network topology aspect of natural intelligence.

What about the neurotransmitters like dopamine or serotonine? Could they (or more specific: their effects) be key to an AI that feels more “natural“?

mh-cx··on The Punctuation Guide
> I agree: there are no rules in a language.

Really? Isn't that a bit broad? It may be half true for some languages but definitely not for all.

For example in Germany we have the "Der Duden" which is not only a dictionary that defines the correct spelling of words but also contains a huge set of grammatical rules. It's still the de-facto standard for correct language in German.

And even in english you'd probably agree that there are some rules, e.g. when it comes to the correct spelling of words.

mh-cx··on First Support for a Physics Theory of Life
> In fact as far as we can tell, life is extremely rare.

As far as we can tell, right. Given our extremely narrowed view on the vast universe I'd say we've seen literally nothing yet. I'd not be surprised if life is not rare at all. It may only be rare in the tiny fraction of space that we know about.

mh-cx··on Is the Universe Made of Math?
That's probably pretty much exactly what Tegmark claims: somewhere in this structure there really is a universe simulated in rust.
mh-cx··on Programming in the Point-Free Style
After a few seconds I was redirected to an ad site that made my mobile vibrate and that “locked me in“ by some redirect trickery which blocked the back button.

Not really what I'd expect from a HN link with so many upvotes. Did no one else experience this?

mh-cx··on The Minimally-Nice Open Source Software Maintainer
I dare to agree. The site is basically unreadable on mobile which is frustrating as the topic is really interesting.
mh-cx··on Mushroom-munching poplar-popping Neandertals
The name of the German valley where the first specimen was found was spelled Neanderthal until early 20th century. But it's Neandertal nowadays.
mh-cx··on Free Will
Lately I tend to think, that talking about “free will“ makes no sense at all. Our consciousness is the product of physical processes. They lead to the decisions we make. That's all there is.

Now if you bring a free will into play, where does it reside? Is it somewhere outside physics? Thats metaphysics then. And out of reach for any understanding anyway so pointless to reason about.

What I could agree on is to see “free will“ as a metaphor for the essence of our existence. The part that we probably never can explain.

mh-cx··on An animated GIF that shows its own MD5
That makes me wonder if it's also easy to create a string that is its own MD5.
mh-cx··on Talk of a Split from Docker
Main question with vagrant was: why?

It's just adding yet another layer to the stack, so another interface to learn. And if things don't work you have to deal with the “low level“ docker setup anyway.

Seriously, I've never looked back at Vagrant ever since.

mh-cx··on Talk of a Split from Docker
I can very much recommend that approach. Working in a very small team we're using docker solely for reproducible development environments with very small footprint. Our projects are usually smaller low range backoffice sites.

We're still hesitant to deploy docker in production though, but its on our list. For now we rebuild the production environment from the recipes in the Dockerfile and docker-compose.yml.

Before that we were using VMs with vagrant. I never really liked how ressource intensive and slow they where. And without VM I also don't see the need for Vagrant anymore if I can use docker directly.

So after 2 years of using docker I'm really very happy with our development setup.

mh-cx··on Docker for Mac and Windows Is Now Generally Available and Ready for Production
> No, on windows you still have to run a Linux vm which the containers will run inside.

I don't think, that's correct. To me that's the whole point of having a native Windows / Mac version of docker. From their feature list:

> Faster and more reliable – native development environment using hypervisors built into each operating system. (No more VirtualBox!)

mh-cx··on Shots Fired at Munich Shopping Centre
He was not complaining about the killing but about Merkel and the refugee situation. Both are quite unrelated to the shooting. Another disgusting case of short sighted populism.
mh-cx··on Shots Fired at Munich Shopping Centre
> ... and the refugees

We have no Information so far. But you seem to have better sources, that confirm, that each and every refugee is a terrorist. So what do you suggest? [deleted]

Sorry, but stereotypes like this really make me sick. You abuse a horrible crime committed by a few to judge over thousands of innocent.

EDIT: Removed some too cynical phrase.

mh-cx··on Shots Fired at Munich Shopping Centre
At least you have found an opportunity for your political agitation.
mh-cx··on The British are Googling what the E.U. is, hours after voting to leave it
He was actually also a porn star. I see that coming during my lifetime.
mh-cx··on UK votes to leave EU
> EU has got to deliver

I think this is the most important misconception GB always had about the EU. It's a union which means, having a well tempered partnership should be the goal - not cherry-picking like the UK often did.

Or, to resemble a famous quote: Ask not, what the EU can do for you - ask what you can do for the EU!

mh-cx··on UK votes to leave EU
What makes you so sure? Populism is on the rise. With decisions like this they just gain even more power, see Peer Wilders etc. And naive people believe in simple solutions to complex problems. They are easy to fool. Our situation now is not so far from 1910 where many intellectuals would never have thought that a war among civilised nations would have been possible.

Honestly - I'm afraid of this development.

mh-cx··on The sudo fraud
On my severs I often use “sudo -s“ in a separate tmux window. I've changed my PS1 to give me a red prompt for root. Over the years I never had a situation where I accidentally did something stupid as root.
