mgiampapa··on New flaw in Intel chips lets attackers slip their own data into secure enclave
They are, you can disable them in the registry.
mgiampapa··on CoronaNotify – Get Notified When the Coronavirus Is Near
I like giving these "services" a one off email address from my own catchall and then check in on it months later to see how they attempted to monetize the data. Would probably make an interesting time series info-graphic.
mgiampapa··on Amazon let a fraudster keep my Sony A74 IV and refunded him
Even a low tech photo record weeds out a lot of fraud. Oh you aren't returning a thing that resembles the photo that was shipped to you? This won't eliminate fraud, but it will move the bar in a non trivial way. Combine this with a photo ID check at the store for the person doing the shipping and your halfway there.
mgiampapa··on Analyzing the attacks on my website
But why would these attacks be in your logs to begin with? Who leaves authentication open to the internet at all? I'm more concerned about the failure to minimize attack surface. This is security 101.
mgiampapa··on Bosch Smart glasses: A tiny laser array paints images directly onto your retina
The only times I ever saw them in the wild was for a security guard. He was using them to watch a movie from what I think was a mini-disc player.
mgiampapa··on Starlink Is a Big Deal
Rich people have boats, by definition these are people with too much money to spend and is a huge market. Airplanes? This will revolutionize coverage on long haul non-polar flights.

Trains? Buses? These both have density issues with the existing cellular network. How many times have you come to a halt in a traffic jam only to have horrible cellular coverage due to the local cell site being overwhelmed?

5G doesn't solve any of these use-cases. There is plenty of room for adoption of starlink at premium prices.

mgiampapa··on Reversing Safeway's private APIs to automate coupon collection
Next time you are at the store look at the circular. There is a barcode you can scan with their app that adds everything to you app that week.
mgiampapa··on Off-Grid, Solar-Powered, Zero-Battery Refrigerator
You always have a power source if you are using a battery long term. Be it a solar panel, generator, mains or some other turbine.

A good MPPT charge controller will handle stepping up and down the voltage as need to provide optimum life.

mgiampapa··on Off-Grid, Solar-Powered, Zero-Battery Refrigerator
I fully expect to get another 5 years out of this set. As long as we get back to float the next day, capacity diminishing doesn't really matter for a house. That's more a function of sizing the input and output to the system than battery capacity.
mgiampapa··on Off-Grid, Solar-Powered, Zero-Battery Refrigerator
No they don't. Case in point, I live off grid with a 24v system composed of 2v lead acid marine batteries. They were 2 years old when I got them and have put them through over 1000 days of use since.

Mind you, I don't discharge the system past 23.5v ever, and I check my electrolyte levels weekly adding distilled water as needed, but lead acid are cheap, effective, long lasting, and recyclable with minimal effort. The only thing against them is maintenance, and they are big and heavy. My house doesn't seem to care.

mgiampapa··on Why Are Human Teeth So Messed Up? (2017)
This used to be quite common. In Ireland for example back in the 1970s about 30% of the population had no natural teeth whatsoever. It used to be a common thing for young women to have all their teeth pulled and replaced with dentures before being married. It was seen as a desirable trait for en eligible bride to be.
mgiampapa··on Making sense of the alleged Supermicro motherboard attack
General practice for things like BMC and other out of band control systems is to put them on isolated vlans and default deny any non-approved traffic.

There is no way that any large tech company security operation misses this traffic phoning home from a management vlan.

mgiampapa··on Some Facebook Employees Unite to Challenge Its ‘Intolerant’ Liberal Culture
I worked for Facebook for almost 6 years and I wouldn't say it's culture is any more liberal than the rest of the SF bay area.

For this population, they see their own views as normal and the center. While from the outside conservatives think it's far left of center, the "dozens" of employees who don't feel this way are the outliers. There are "dozens" of employees who feel FB's culture isn't liberal enough. With an employee base of tens of thousands you are going to have disagreements in philosophy, but Facebook does nothing to hide the company culture in it's hiring practice. There is no bait and switch going on. Other voices are heard, but if you have a minority viewpoint you shouldn't expect the world to pivot around what you think is right.

mgiampapa··on QEMU 2.0.0 Released
KVM can work with VMware vmdk-flat files natively without conversion. Just make sure you have the drivers and kernel support for KVM installed beforehand and you don't even need to convert them.
mgiampapa··on Infographic of US Gun Crime
Clearly not made by an American. No one uses state flags for identification. <comicbookguy> Worst info graphic ever </comicbookguy>
mgiampapa··on Facebook Denies Giving NSA Direct Access To Its Servers
How do you prove a negative?
mgiampapa··on ARM adopts 64-bit architecture
Didn't we hear this with mips, sparc, ppc, transmeta and every other cpu architecture of the moment? Yes, ARM has a place, but it's not going to displace x86. What will slowly displace x86 is the transition to post-pc devices. But these will run whatever has the current sweet spot between cost and power.
mgiampapa··on I moved to Singapore
I was just in Singapore for 2 weeks. The streets aren't all that clean. Cleaner than San Francisco or NYC yes... but there is litter in the mornings and evenings and this was even in the highly tourist areas downtown by the Marina Bay. (Awesome hotel pool at least, but that's not how I would pick a place to live)
