mgiampapa··on T-Mobile Completes Acquisition of Mint Mobile
Mint as an MVNO never worked independently in applying pricing pressure. It was always beholden to the minimum cost of one of the big 3.

New MVNOs will launch, others will fail. The only thing I've learned from this is to try and invest in anything Ryan Reynolds is selling.

mgiampapa··on FCC votes to restore net neutrality rules
I believe a side effect of the way the legislation was written included that if they weren't neutral, then they couldn't do business with the State of California either or anything the state runs, like pension plans.

How much can you make doing business with or in CA vs. grifting the rest of the nation and bad press? It's very risky move. CA won and Verizon et all blinked.

mgiampapa··on FCC votes to restore net neutrality rules
Because California saved it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Internet_Consumer_P...

If any of the companies that wanted to exploit the lack of FCC enforced net neutrality did business with California they would have had a big problem.

mgiampapa··on John Carmack on Meta Horizon OS
Back in march Google approached Meta to try and push XR in a very one-sided arrangement. https://www.roadtovr.com/meta-google-android-xr-quest-reject...

The timing of this is probably just a manifestation of the f-you back to google from Zuck and Boz.

mgiampapa··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
Here comes Elon with another hold my beer moment. Thank god he already wasted billions on Twitter.
mgiampapa··on New theory on Satoshi Nakamoto
Bletchley Park would like a word.
mgiampapa··on New theory on Satoshi Nakamoto
It's awfully hard for 3 people to keep a secret when that much money could be on the line.
mgiampapa··on Support for Windows 10 will end in October 2025
I think that all depends on if someone finds 500ms of extra latency they can't explain.
mgiampapa··on Meta's Onavo VPN removed SSL encryption of competitor's analytics traffic
Certificate pinning and validation in apps for one. Onavo's VPN was really clear it collected market research data. It was as informed consent as a click-through could be.
mgiampapa··on Banana prices to go up as temperatures rise, says expert
They grow just fine at outside my house, but I like the monstera fruit better.
mgiampapa··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
Many states (15) have a duty to retreat, not everywhere is a stand your ground state (35 states). It's complicated, but most of the time in your home there is an exception.
mgiampapa··on MTA board votes to approve new $15 toll to drive into Manhattan
So one of the big things this will do is encourage mass transit from the eastern new york / Manhattan river crossings. It has never been (and will continue to not be) a level playing field for commuters. Coming in from Brooklyn or Queens there are a lot of commuters that drive into lower Manhattan which until now was entirely un-tolled. This, combined with the rebate for people taking the existing tolled entrances will be a first step in equity.
mgiampapa··on "FB internal Thrift over HTTP" removed my phone – how is this possible? (2022)
Lots of internal tools used it when I was there, but that was years ago. https://github.com/facebook/fbthrift
mgiampapa··on A cargo ship's 'WindWing' sails saved it up to 12 tons of fuel per day
That is because of the difference in mass over the voyage, the less delta in your fuel math the less of a problem it is. Also, nothing prevents you from doing exactly this with a smaller amount of fuel. Last I checked dense liquids continue to be dense liquids and will flow to the lowest point.
mgiampapa··on A cargo ship's 'WindWing' sails saved it up to 12 tons of fuel per day
You don't need to compare to the size of the ship, you need to compare to the size / mass / cost of the sails.
mgiampapa··on A cargo ship's 'WindWing' sails saved it up to 12 tons of fuel per day
3.3 tons of fuel per day adds up to a lot of extra cargo that isn't fuel.
mgiampapa··on Mozilla Drops Onerep After CEO Admits to Running People-Search Networks
This explains some trends where posts are being edited on Reddit with nonsense then deleted. Personally, I think this kind of behavior makes the web poorer as a knowledge base. Yes you have a right to do it with your own content, but doing it at scale makes the internet a less useful tool and it makes me a bit sad since the scrapers will already have the data anyway.
mgiampapa··on Starship's Third Flight Test [video]
That was also with a rush order on it due to the Shuttle's retirement.
mgiampapa··on Starship's Third Flight Test [video]
In my view, since I was the one that said it, anything more than 5 years away is perpetually 5 years away until it's been proven. Yes, eventually when Starship has enough launches and a track record it will get human rated by NASA to carry astronauts. This is the only actual certification for human space flight worth paying attention to right now. It's possible to get on a rocket otherwise, but the US government isn't going to pay for the ride. Getting flight certified by NASA is expensive and requires a level of experience with the vehicle that doesn't make sense for at least 5 years given we have a cheap and safe ride to LEO via Falcon / Dragon. Nobody is going to rush human flight on Starship, it's only going to have people on it once it's already in space.
mgiampapa··on Starship's Third Flight Test [video]
Yes, landing on the Moon without an atmosphere is vastly different from orbital flight on earth and has an entirely different risk profile.
mgiampapa··on Pornhub Blocked in Texas
Being able to produce a credit card number and transaction has nothing to do with a user's age or the stated goal of the law, protecting minors.
mgiampapa··on Starship's Third Flight Test [video]
Passenger rating isn't even in the cards for Starship for a long time. You ride to LEO on a Falcon-9 with a proven track record for the foreseeable future.
mgiampapa··on New York medical school eliminates tuition after $1B gift
On a large scale a 5% average return is very conservative. No interest rates won't stay where they are, but no one would invest an endowment just by putting it a HYSA.
mgiampapa··on Amazon is chopping jobs at its One Medical and Pharmacy units
Isn't that exactly what Mark Cuban is doing with Cost Plus Drugs Company?
mgiampapa··on MrBeast reveals he made $250k from X video

mgiampapa··on Panama Canal drought forces Maersk to start using land bridge for Oceania cargo
You just dig a trench and fill it with seawater, then float it over. The train just needs to go next to it to pull the boat.
mgiampapa··on Hertz to sell 20k EVs in shift back to gas-powered cars
Level 2 Tesla destination chargers are everywhere in SV and you can use them with with any J1772 car using a simple adapter.

There are now also adapters for fast charging Tesla connectors to CCS1, but that is relatively recent.

mgiampapa··on Blockbuster Alzheimer's paper retracted by former Stanford president
People have to have the innovative ideas and skill to make them happen, and others need to know them to fund the venture.
mgiampapa··on Orion Browser by Kagi
Thanks, not having an iOS device or Mac I didn't check that far into their site. I'm not willing to invest into that ecosystem until Apple allows some freedom.
mgiampapa··on Orion Browser by Kagi
Since it supports iOS and iPadOS, does it use a fork of WebKit, or is it embedded Safari? What manifest API is it going to support going forward?
