Idk, but apparently they still do webhosting
mghackerlady··on The GitHub wiki is an anti-pattern (2022)
Fossil is the best. Sqlite uses it
mghackerlady··on Fujitsu launches made-in-Japan next-generation CPU FUJITSU-MONAKA
They made 6502 and Z80 clones as well, nintendo used them iirc

Powers not dead yet! IBM is still clinging to it and I can't blame them, it's a pretty good ISA

I was hoping risc-v. One of these days
mghackerlady··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
Even then, English has become the defacto language of computing. Some amount of knowledge of its basic vocab is expected, and many computer related words in other languages are english loanwords.
mghackerlady··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
Even back in the day they were bad. Things generally worked but were rarely pleasant
mghackerlady··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
and, as is being increasingly forgotten, SOUND QUES. Seriously, I get they can be annoying but they make navigating and interacting with things so much easier if you can't see them. Sure, TTS exists but is far more inefficient and objectively less helpful in these kinds of circumstances
mghackerlady··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
Funny how that works. It's almost as if the web was designed to be a tool for semi-interactive documents instead JVM-esque WODE environment
mghackerlady··on Everything you do is being recorded
I know some minimalists who use one as their mobile phone exclusively
mghackerlady··on Windows XP 2002 for the Itanium: Unbridled rage
I miss itanium. I feel like a madman for saying it, but I do. Something about it is just alluring to me. Alas, the problems were too hard to solve or weren't worth solving anymore

Ironically, it died around the time LLMs/AI started becoming good. I feel like the compiler problems with vliw could be solved to a degree with a purpose built ai

mghackerlady··on NetBSD 11.0
OpenBSD is the most security hardened OS out there, and the project maintains many pieces of software people take for granted, like pf, openssh, and libressl. FreeBSD is definitely the most robust, and is a very good server OS. NetBSDs niche is how many platforms can run it. If it's supported by GCC, theres a decent chance NetBSD will run on it
mghackerlady··on NetBSD 11.0
Specifically, their old bluetooth code was crap so they chose to get rid of it. If someone wants to have OpenBSD bluetooth, they'll gladly accept patches if the code meets their very strict standards
mghackerlady··on NetBSD 11.0
They don't like GPLv3. The other BSDs used similarly old versions until they moved to clang, but netbsd is pretty tied to the gnu toolchain and aims to be as portable as possible, so they kinda have to stick to gcc
mghackerlady··on The small, real, original web
At least with kagi it's not like they have a better option. They could go with bing but then they'd just be another bing frontend
mghackerlady··on The small, real, original web
Right, but being against gay people isn't exactly the live and let live vision
mghackerlady··on Half-Life 2 running natively on HaikuOS
It's about as daily driveable as BeOS was in its heyday
mghackerlady··on Half-Life 2 running natively on HaikuOS
I always thought it'd be hilarious if they released an engine called "open source" (or, someone made a source replacement called that)
mghackerlady··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
The american AI companies, presumably
mghackerlady··on VTubing: How a Japanese Phenomenon Is Going Worldwide
I've personally met more women into vtubers as a whole than men. Though, I've met a lot more men who exclusively watch a single vtuber to an almost obsessive degree. This probably has its roots, like most things in the scene, in Japanese idol culture. At least from what I've seen, women are more likely to enjoy the entire experience surrounding the industry instead of just a single idol or group

Also, this completely ignores the small but not insignificant minority of male vtubers

mghackerlady··on VTubing: How a Japanese Phenomenon Is Going Worldwide
I think neuro-sama has been accepted because she isn't deceptive. It's very clear that Neuro-sama isn't a real person or even really intelligent. The other big reason is that she collaborates with other vtubers and has brought new audiences to them.

Also, arguably nowadays the main streamer is Vedal, her (for lack of a better term) handler. Part of the fun is seeing them interact

mghackerlady··on VTubing: How a Japanese Phenomenon Is Going Worldwide
Japanese idol culture and the first few vtubers, iirc
mghackerlady··on VTubing: How a Japanese Phenomenon Is Going Worldwide
That's one reason. Another big one is it's fun to put on a character. It lets you step away from things you don't like about yourself while embracing the things you do
mghackerlady··on VTubing: How a Japanese Phenomenon Is Going Worldwide
I watch a few indie vtubers (and was a fan of idol corp before they got sold off and their first english gen left). I like the streamers and would watch them regardless of what they look like in meatspace
mghackerlady··on Minecraft: Java Edition now uses SDL3
That's absolutely idiotic
mghackerlady··on How we measured AI writing across arXiv, and where the measurement breaks
That's not the point though, the point being made ist that an LLM written paper very likely doesn't actually find something despite looking like it does on the surface
mghackerlady··on Hyprland 0.55 announced the switch to Lua for its config files
I think it's only really useful for things you'd want to be able to control programmatically, like text editors or in this case window managers
mghackerlady··on Minecraft: Java Edition now uses SDL3
Correct. There are ways to host bedrock servers, it just isn't as easy and most people are better served by realms.

Also, I thought you could play the iOS version on Mac. Doesn't apple let you run iPad apps on macOS?

mghackerlady··on I joined the IndieWeb, here's what I learned
the people who want to overturn big platforms seem a lot larger than they really are. Think of how many people genuinely like facebook. It seems impossible to us, but there are hundreds of millions who still actively post and interact who see no problem with facebook

For even more minimal edits, I still use xpaint
