I really hope a similar revolution comes to photo and video editing. While there are plenty of really good FOSS video editors (including the one blender has), none of them are truly professional level. For photo editing, the GIMP is pretty much there, but it's old and crusty and maintained by a handful of people

I know games at least are still predominantly done in Maya. That's starting to change, with newcomers having learnt blender and anything indie-adjacent using blender for years, but large AAA studios have used Maya for so long switching still isn't worth it

Realistically, who among blenders target audience doesn't have 3 button mouses or a numpad? Numpads have been standard on desktop keyboards since the 80s, and any mouse sold today can at least kinda do middle click by clicking in the scroll wheel. Even a lot of laptops have numpads, and clever use of multitouch can emulate a middle click.

Mostly unrelated, but jesus christ you people are uberfocused on mindshare without stopping to think about who your product would actually be useful for

mghackerlady··on Blender 5.2 LTS
Those are, and at the time of blenders creation were, assumptions that should be made for workstations. Things objectively work better with more buttons

I feel like a project to make an adobe CS competitor, limited in scope to those early versions like CS1 or 2, could really get off the ground. I suspect for 99% of users, things added since the CS1/CS2 days aren't really used enough that not having them becomes a dealbreaker

If you have the time, taking some time to learn the basics, even just for fun, adds a neat skill to your toolbox. You never know when you might have a use for it. Even if you don't, sometimes learning a new creative tool gets the idea juices flowing
mghackerlady··on Blender 5.2 LTS
Right, but those are for simple tasks. Much like vi or emacs, the keybindings are esoteric and historical but so much of what makes the tools great is reliant on on said historical and esoteric behaviour that changing any of it becomes an exercises in futility

I could see a collaborative open source web index run by the WMF, Internet Archive, EFF, GNU, DuckDuckGo, and Kagi being too big to simply ignore like a previous commenter suggested might happen to a new index. I could also see Qwant being interested

The license is tied to the platform (for the most part, there have been ways to run Java edition on android forever), so if you bought the android version you only have whatever's available on android.

I brought up the bedrock/java bundle deal with the PC version since the main advantage of Bedrock is the crossplay. If you want to play with someone on (for example) android, you can simply choose to launch into bedrock on PC for multiplayer

At this point, I want to see the next indieweb thing be forgoing domains entirely, instead passing around IPv4 addresses and keeping your own indexes in a markdown file or something
mghackerlady··on I joined the IndieWeb, here's what I learned
ownership requires a bit of toiling to be meaningful, though. If everyone can have something, then nobody has it because it stops being something to be had
mghackerlady··on I joined the IndieWeb, here's what I learned
You aren't getting the point though. Despite the burdens being technical in nature, they aren't very complex. There's just enough friction to prevent every village idiot from publishing, but the friction is easy enough to overcome that anyone with something actually interesting to discuss or useful to add to a discussion can overcome it in at most a weekend
mghackerlady··on I joined the IndieWeb, here's what I learned
because the ones who have interesting things to say and want to say it for themselves number many, despite being very small in the face of the unwashed masses
mghackerlady··on Who Is America's Homer?
I didn't think that, but despite being in jest my head immediately answered "simpson"
mghackerlady··on LEDs’ potential to save our night skies
Even then, couldn't you just use IR cameras with IR lights for illumination. I'm sure that comes with it's own set of issues, but strictly speaking is better for maximising surveillance while minimising human impact

I feel like, despite not being my (and presumably most of HNs, given the general demographics) cup of tea, sports are largely that. The players are skilled but also uniquely themselves. The world cup wouldn't be nearly as interesting if it were just unthinking robots fighting to see who can run around and kick things the best

I've always taken :/ to be a kind of hopeless dejection mixed with apathy. In this case, it seems to convey their disappointment in their skills as well as the futility of improving
mghackerlady··on Xiaomi-Robotics-1
Anecdotal, but the best machine will never be able to do something as good as the best human in most circumstances. That is because, unlike machines, humans have passions and character that subtly imbues itself in the end result. This, of course, isn't limited to coffee, but to anything a machine could do that isn't strictly tied to exercises in logic (for example, computers will always be better than humans at most games because they can be analysed logically and acted upon)

I feel like there'll soon be a market for AI controlled enhancements like limbs. Neural interfaces seem to be a long shot, at least for now, so some kind of AI that senses the environment and intelligently react to it seems like the next best thing
mghackerlady··on 'We used acid to sabotage Microsoft hyperscale data centre construction'
No, but people aren't that smart. They're angry and need a sacrifice

The (official, though by now long dead) raspberry pi version has python scripting. TBH that's almost all it has going for it, besides being open source
mghackerlady··on Minecraft: Java Edition now uses SDL3
And the one that Mojang actually uses for development. IIRC any new features are done in Java and ported to bedrock (presumably by a seperate team)
mghackerlady··on Minecraft: Java Edition now uses SDL3
Also, minecraft wasn't nearly as big as it was today. It was noticeable, but it wasn't headed by microsoft. There's no way it would've gotten an exception
mghackerlady··on Minecraft: Java Edition now uses SDL3
That's nothing, I think it's even cooler to see what people can do with just command blocks (which are basically redstone activated console command scripts). Even cooler still is the people who forgo even that and do cool things in redstone exclusively. Redstone computers in minecraft have been a thing almost as long as redstone has

Dude, spoilers
mghackerlady··on Minecraft: Java Edition now uses SDL3
BAD ADVICE. LIKE, REALLY BAD ADVICE. Many a dumb kid has set up an ill protected minecraft server for fun and gotten ddossed by skids only a few hours later
mghackerlady··on Minecraft: Java Edition now uses SDL3
I love Luanti. Is it as good as minecraft? No, not really, but I appreciate it's existence, if not for a non-hacky BSD minecraft experience (You can run java edition on *BSD from what I've seen, but ymmv as I've personally never tried)
mghackerlady··on Minecraft: Java Edition now uses SDL3
In case you aren't aware, bedrock and java are both part of the same license and can both be played freely in the launcher. Also, while desktop GNU/Linux can't run bedrock, android can, and that has been exploited to allow for actual desktop linux clients for bedrock
mghackerlady··on Minecraft: Java Edition now uses SDL3
As someone who's messed with redstone on both, Bedrock is uniquely infuriating because it adds some really cool things (being able to move entity blocks like chests and furnaces comes to mind) while completely destroying the groundwork of even moderately advanced redstone. The most visible is the timing for certain things becoming nondeterministic, and while technically a bug originally, quasi-connectivity is extremely useful

I know this is probably not as easy as it is in my head, but doesn't xbox have a .net runtime? It would completely take away the portability aspect, but if the original 360 port was handled in house I could totally see them using that weird Java on .net thing in at least some capacity
