mgav··on For Gen Z, TikTok Is the New Search Engine
TikTok’s ascent as a search engine may mean that more people stumble upon misinformation and disinformation on the app, which could then be amplified and spread further, said Francesca Tripodi, an information and library science professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The platform has struggled with moderating misleading content about elections, the war in Ukraine and abortion.

TikTok’s algorithm tends to keep people on the app, making it harder for them to turn to additional sources to fact-check searches, Ms. Tripodi added.

“You aren’t really clicking to anything that would lead you out of the app,” she said. “That makes it even more challenging to double-check the information you’re getting is correct.”

mgav··on For Gen Z, TikTok Is the New Search Engine
“In our studies, something like almost 40 percent of young people, when they’re looking for a place for lunch, they don’t go to Google Maps or Search. They go to TikTok or Instagram,” Prabhakar Raghavan, a Google senior vice president, said at a technology conference in July.

…TikTok’s results “don’t seem as biased” as Google’s, she said, adding that she often wants “a different opinion” from what ads and websites optimized for Google say.

mgav··on I regret my website redesign
In the early 2000s I was a professional day trader and Knight was a market-making firm. EVERY single person I dealt with was an absolute crook, happy to break rules and do disgustingly horrible things to enrich themselves, because they were truly incompetent traders.

I think outsourced success depends heavily on choosing capable & honest people and your ability to carefully manage them (give a little rope, see how they do, and then decide whether or not to continue).

Thank you. I'm sorry you had such as terrible #ripoff experience, but it's great of you to share what happened, so others can learn & avoid.
mgav··on Loans Could Burn Startup Workers in Downturn
“Ted Wang, a former start-up lawyer and an investor at Cowboy Ventures, was so alarmed by the loans that he published a blog post* in 2014, “Playing With Fire,” advising against them for most people…”

mgav··on Loans Could Burn Startup Workers in Downturn
“Last year, Bolt Financial, a payments start-up, began a new program for its employees. They owned stock options in the company, some worth millions of dollars on paper, but couldn’t touch that money until Bolt sold or went public. So Bolt began providing them with loans — some reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars — against the value of their stock.

In May, Bolt laid off 200 workers. That set off a 90-day period for those who had taken out the loans to pay the money back. The company tried to help them figure out options for repayment, said a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke anonymously…”

mgav··on Toronto, the Quietly Booming Tech Town
"…Thanks to years of investment from local universities, government agencies and business leaders and Canada’s liberal immigration policies, Toronto is now the third-largest tech hub in North America.

It is home to more tech workers than Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle and Washington, D.C., trailing only New York and Silicon Valley…"

Idea (in progress) to create an open source, uniform, easily-parsed* way to numerically identify every address

*not Plus Codes

I'm not sure yet about how to convert street names into numbers in a logical character-efficient way.

Ideas & feedback welcome!

RE: the "Plus Code" (aka "Open Location" code) system, which is lat/lng based and open source (managed by Google), but I don't think it's great for buildings with hundreds of apartments in a single location, such as an apartment tower in NYC.

This post - https://www.dcode.fr/open-location-code - describes how to convert from that code to GPS coordinates (GPS coordinates can be converted to/from a real-language address using the Google Maps Geocoding API (https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/geocoding/o...)

For example, the zipd for The White House (1600 Pennsylvania Ave) is "84074482_zpid" according to this listing: https://www.zillow.com/homes/1600-Pennsylvania-Avenue-NW,-Wa...

Interestingly, Zillow's value estimate ("Zestimate") is $447 million.

CodeApprove looks interesting. Consider changing the text in between your <title> tags to "CodeApprove - Better code review for teams on GitHub" so I know what the heck it is and can easily find it again when searching my bookmarks.

mgav··on Are Electric Cars Better for the Environment?
"...Are EVs really better for the environment, though? A close look at all the factors shows they are—but it’s a complex answer with some asterisks.

The environmental cost of a car includes both building it and fueling it. That means factoring in emissions associated with oil drilling and power plant smokestacks, as well as from mining metals such as nickel and cobalt that are needed for electric-car batteries..."

mgav··on The Inner Bezos (1999)
This didn't age well:

Bezos has been characterized as yet another fuzzy-cheeked geek who lucked into an IPO, an uninspired financial technician with a good but not very original idea about distributing goods over the Internet, who would soon be, in the ill-fated phrase of Forrester Research president George Colony, "Amazon.toast."
