mgalka··on Kodak Ektra
If by "phone" you mean "pocket computer with native apps and a slick UI," then I agree, Kodak will probably suck as a "phone."

Otherwise, I can't imagine the phone part could be that much worse than Apple.

mgalka··on Google May Be Stealing Mobile Traffic
Sure Google has no legal obligation to send the traffic to the site, but it is still sort of dishonest. Google convices people to install AMP under the premise that it will help them. Instead, it just allows Google to monetize other people's content, at the expense of the creator.

It's hypocrital to bill AMP as an improved mobile experience, while sticking a big button at the top. Also hypocritical to penalize sites for scraped, dublicate content, while doing the same themselves.

mgalka··on Show HN: Your Social Media Fingerprint (maybe NSFW)
Interesting Instagram moved the favicon image but Facebook has not
mgalka··on Show HN: Tesseract.js – Pure JavaScript OCR for 60 Languages
Awesome! The ability to OCR video in a browser opens up so many interesting possibilities.
mgalka··on ACLU exposes Facebook, Twitter for selling surveillance company user data
1. The data is freely viewable to anyone on the internet. There is just no practical means of searching / discovering it without the companies' feeds.

2. They shouldn't call it user data, as if Twitter / Facebook were selling private information they store about users. This tool just searches the public stream of posts.

mgalka··on A Natural Law for Rotating Galaxies: What Does This Mean for Dark Matter?
Unusual to see a new physics discovery that you don't need a PhD to understand
mgalka··on Show HN: Dijkstra’s algorithm in the web browser with OpenStreetMap
Very cool project. Great presentation.
mgalka··on Too Many Tools and Frameworks (2015)
> "Using the same standards that categorize 90% of science fiction as trash, crud, or crap, it can be argued that 90% of film, literature, consumer goods, etc. is crap."

90% is also roughly the failure rate of startups. Pareto principle?

mgalka··on Why's that company so big? I could do that in a weekend
While I agree 100%, I think the answer is more satisfying when viewed a different perspective.

It's not that Uber needs all those engineers. It's just a question of marginal cost vs marginal return. Uber made 1.5 billion in revenue in 2015. An engineer costs roughly $150k / yr. An additional 100 engineers only have to make enough small improvements to increase revenue by 1% to pay for themselves.

mgalka··on Never accept a counter-offer
Interesting post, though am I the only one who finds it strange to see it upvoted so many times on hacker news.
mgalka··on Pixels and voxels, the long answer
Great post! Clear, thorough explanation and fun read.
mgalka··on Leaflet 1.0 – A JavaScript library for mobile-friendly interactive maps
- New L.Tooltip class for all your dynamic labeling needs.

- Flyover animations (zooming and panning in a curve with map.flyTo).

- Fractional zoom level support (map.setZoom(12.34)).

- Much better tile loading algorithm with less flickering.

Seems like a lot of features come straight from Mapbox GL

mgalka··on Commodore Back in Germany
Had so much fun with these as a kid, I'd love to play around with one for a little while. Though hard to imagine why anyone would want to use one on a regular basis.
mgalka··on Show HN: A WebGL visualization to show how global temperature changed since 1850
Cool map! Is that coded with Cesium?
mgalka··on How to Write Articles and Essays Quickly and Expertly (2006)
What a great post! Very clear and practically helpful. Thanks for posting.
mgalka··on When Will New York City Sink?
I've seen a lot of projections like this, showing areas that will someday be underwater when sea levels rise. But am I missing something? Why wouldn't people just build barriers to keep the water out?

That may be prohibitively expensive for some places, but for Manhattan, I have to imagine the cost would be small compared to the alternative.

mgalka··on Welcome to the Simulcasting Video Player beta
Strange, confusing site. Sort of fun to explore though.
mgalka··on Web Scraping in 2016
Whether or not it technically qualifies as a "double standard," in practice I don't see anything inherently unfair about it.

If a stranger enters my house without my permission, that's trespassing. But there's nothing unfair about letting in someone who I invite over.

mgalka··on NASA just made all the scientific research it funds available for free
Here is the new research portal: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/funder/nasa/
mgalka··on North Korea 'feeding workers crystal meth' to speed up skyscraper project
Can't speak to the credibility of the source, but it's not the first connection between North Korea and Meth. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Korea%27s_illicit_activi...
mgalka··on IDI Has Built a Profile on Every American Adult
I think the difference is that these companies provide the data to anyone as a service (FB/Google keep it all in house).

That said, I agree there's nothing particularly newsworthy in there. These companies have existed for a long time.

mgalka··on Who’s the First Person in History Whose Name We Know? (2015)
Yes. Could have been phrased better, but it's true. For anyone who's read/heard any of his work, it's clear he's not sexist. Think the meaning he had in mind is different from how it comes off.
mgalka··on Who’s the First Person in History Whose Name We Know? (2015)
1. Didn't know Krulwich maintained a blog. It's awesome.

2. I respect that he took the time to write a thoughtful response. But reading the comments, it just looks like your standard troll BS that you see everywhere. Had very little merit.

3. Agree, it's sad that so many people seem to take pleasure in criticizing when they are anonymous.

mgalka··on Microsoft sued over Windows 10 update campaign
> The company said updates to Windows 10 are a choice, not a requirement

The other day, I woke up to my computer installing Windows 10 on its own. I was out of commission for hours waiting for it to finish installing, then a few more hours getting back to Windows 8 -- basically blocked an entire day of work.

mgalka··on Superformula
For any D3 users, there is a superformula plugin. Very handy. http://bl.ocks.org/mbostock/1020902
mgalka··on Reddit is still in turmoil
The mobile version of the site doesn't work and they only just released a mobile app. That says it all about their lack of focus.
mgalka··on Show HN: Predicting the winner of the 2016 US presidential election
Cool model. Did you look at empirical data to derive the shape of the curve? The output is very different from 538's. Any intuition for what part of the model is behind that?
mgalka··on How I Could Steal Money from Instagram, Google and Microsoft
Cool idea. My sense is that they would catch on before the amounts reached anything substantial, but who knows. Either way, fun as a thought experiment.
mgalka··on CloudFlare, We Have a Problem
Completely agree. It actually made my site slower, killed many speed optimization I had implemented.
