mg74··on This Biology Book Blew Me Away
Would you recommend it as an audio book, or are the visuals essential?
mg74··on JSX is no longer my friend
The compile is a huuuge plus. If you do a error in your template string (e.g. forget a '>'), you won't catch it until you run it in the browser. The JSX will complain loudly when compiled.

JSX >>>> ES6 template strings

mg74··on JSX is no longer my friend
My brain parses JSX way better than Hyperscript, so I will stick with it and suffer the extra keystrokes.

And the context switch has not proved to be a problem for me, but I'm sympathetic to the argument.

If you want to do Windows, consider using https://github.com/kentcdodds/argv-set-env for a cross-platform solution to setting enviroment variables
mg74··on E-Book Sales Fall After New Amazon Contracts
These publishers are absolute idiots. Ebooks for 12 to 16 dollars just to support their outdated business model of the hardcover to paperback cycle.

I have a whishlist of over 1000 books on Amazon. I can just go through that list and wait with the newer ebook titles until they drop down in prices. This will be my "customer buying pattern" from now on.

Winners: 2 to 3 year old books and Amazon. Loosers: New books and the publishers.

mg74··on Efficient Nested React Components
The article is talking about optimizing VDOM generation, not DOM manipulation.
mg74··on 6to5 (ES6 transpiler) is now renamed Babel
Hardly, 6to5 isn't a library that you include in your own code. Its a tool that you use indirectly through Gulp/Browserify/WebPack.

mg74··on Android One
Well did you get the international edition? Because I did, and that was even worse. Samsung managed the updates and had their own branch of Android for the phone. It both lagged the Google version and stopped at 4.2.x, which was terrible because the Galaxy Nexus suffered dearly from the flash fragmentation issue which was only fixed in 4.3.x.

I managed to flash the phone to the Google branch and get it to 4.3.x after being stuck on dog slow phone for over 6 months, made it usable again.

mg74··on Go Concurrency Patterns: Context
How is this Context supposed to work with middleware packages that build on the standard Go http interface? Seems to me that you have to declare Context as a parameter to your functions t o use it. Am I misreading something?
mg74··on Native GUI library for Go
ServerSwift! SwiftPOSIX! SwiftToJS! SwiftGTK! KSwift! WinSwift! SwiftCurse!
mg74··on Microsoft Open Sources C# Compiler
The forward slash in paths only sort of works but not really. And because you can sort of use forward slash and backslash for paths deliminators you can't escape spaces in path names.

And why did they have to screw up tab completion like that? More like tab cycling. Why does MS always have to be different just for the sake of being different?

MS whole approach to the cli grinds my gears. And Powershell fixes nothing.

mg74··on Microsoft Open Sources C# Compiler
Its not the filesystem thats the problem, but the terrible partitioned-backslash-ridden namespace. Come on MS, embrace the forward slash already.
mg74··on Google’s Chromebooks Have Hit Their Stride
The bet Google is making is that the long tail of Win apps will be dwarfed by the longer tail of web apps. As always, the future will tell.

mg74··on Id Software founder John Carmack resigns
Seconded!

And I can recommend the audio version, Wil Wheaton does a great job.

mg74··on Show HN: Lekh Diagram for Android – A sketch recognition diagramming app
I like this. One great feature would be to automatically save to a Dropbox/Google Drive/.. location. Im pretty sure the Dropbox api's support that, don't know about the GDrive apis.
mg74··on Iterator patterns in Go
Go supports this:

mg74··on Android KitKat
The next Nexus phone should be out in November. They often introduce the newest version of Android on those (all except the Nexus 4, which came with 4.2 introduced on the Nexus 7).
mg74··on Do things, write about it
I'm using blogger for my side project (http://higherordergo.blogspot.com). It is nothing special but it gets the job done for close to zero time configuration.
mg74··on Hands on with Bootstrap 3 - A landing page
What with the Mac window chrome and all? Well, fooled me.

Thanks for the reply

mg74··on Hands on with Bootstrap 3 - A landing page
Totally unrelated, but what editor is this that is being used here for the screenshots? Anyone know?
mg74··on Icelandic Pirate Party enters parliament
There's no hardening bifurcation in Iceland around this issue. No one is speaking the pro-copyright voice since it is hard for local politicians geting worked up about teenagers downloading American tv shows. We have a local pro-copyright lobby group (industry association) that has had some success; mostly getting CD's and DVD's taxed, pressuring police authorities doing some token raids every three years and having local torrent sites closed down.
mg74··on Icelandic Pirate Party enters parliament
No the Independent Party (the conservatives) are the ones that were voted out last time and they merely added 3% points this time around (their second worst result ever). But since the Social Dems got slaughtered they are the biggest party now (by virtue of not crashing and burning this time around).

The big winners are the Progressives (the farmers party) and they were last voted out of power some 6 years ago, before the 2007 crash. They are winning now because of the Icesave issue which the Social Dems and the Left Greens fucked up badly last term.

mg74··on Icelandic Pirate Party enters parliament
It was one guy and he's out of power now. And he's hardly a hard liner, he just likes to ban things.
mg74··on Negative temperatures are not colder than absolute zero
I read through the article and the comments and felt I almost understood what was going on but was still missing something. Your example then made it all click for me in one of those "Aha!" moments.

Thank you.
