mfkpon PeerTube is recognized as a digital public good by Digital Public Goods Alliance

Definitely, hard to compete with YouTube as a revenue source. That being said, my instance is mainly for digitizing and hosting old VHS tapes from my family so they don't get lost over the years. No need for advertising there :)

mfkpon PeerTube is recognized as a digital public good by Digital Public Goods Alliance

I host a simpler youtube alternative based on https://www.mediacms.io/

It's not a perfect platform, but generally does well enough from my home server and a gigabit fiber connection.

mfkpon Have I been Flocked? – Check if your license plate is being watched

Seems like the website has ran out of cloudflare worker credits on their plan:

mfkpon Synology reverses policy banning third-party HDDs

Same, but I went with minisforum (another well known mini-pc brand): https://store.minisforum.com/products/minisforum-n5-us

Installed unraid on it and it's been working great. So long, Synology.

mfkpon Cloudflare Email Service: private beta

Yes, honestly been much more reliable than my previous provider (mailgun). Their IPs were constantly getting on spam blocklists with yahoo and hotmail. No issues with zepto so far, been using about 9 months.

mfkpon Cloudflare Email Service: private beta

Zeptomail by zoho has been reliable for me and extremely reasonably priced: https://www.zoho.com/zeptomail/

mfkpon Priced out of traditional housing, more Americans are living in RVs

Now do the math on driving your RV everywhere (or purchasing a separate smaller vehicle that you can use to get around town, and tow behind the RV when traveling). I'd assume that would cost more.

mfkpon Charlie Kirk killed at event in Utah

Blue population centers have a lot of money, and though expensive, importing food from other countries is always an option.

mfkpon iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max

mfkpon Show HN: React Web Camera – Fix <input type=file> single-photo limit

Looks nice, and good demo. Maybe add a section to the site or the github showing browser support? I have some custom webcam capture stuff on my app but I need to make sure it works everywhere. Lastly, does it work with react native?

mfkpon Unsafe and Unpredictable: My Volvo EX90 Experience

Tons of P2's out there even sub 25k, mostly lease returns. Great value.

mfkpon Unsafe and Unpredictable: My Volvo EX90 Experience

2023 C40 (same platform) here, similar experience. I'm happy with my purchase.

mfkpon Unsafe and Unpredictable: My Volvo EX90 Experience

Also the Volvo C40 (same platform). I've been driving it since January and other than the software being slow to start up when it goes into sleep mode, it's been stable.

They did recently issue a software recall for the backup camera, so now when the backup camera crashes it goes into 360 camera mode instead of just a black screen.

Overall I'm happy with this car though and would recommend it.

mfkpon Bluetooth Jammer

If you trust that it's really off. Not sure if it's still the case but see: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22856030

mfkpon Bluetooth Jammer

Would potentially be useful when walking through grocery stores etc. that track your precise location and shopping habits through bluetooth beacons.

Or just leave your phone in the car and pay with cash...

mfkpon Meta announces Oakley smart glasses

I'd like to thank Meta for permanently banning all of my accounts with no warning and no ability to appeal a few months ago. Now no need to waste money on these overpriced spy goggles.

mfkpon Whistleblower: DOGE Siphoned NLRB Case Data

I suppose it's just a bit frustrating that HN is one of the few places left on the internet where we can have a mostly civilized discussion about politics. I had missed the discussion from 7 days ago so this was news to me (and I'm sure most of the other commenters). If you miss the one chance to discuss that one topic, it can never be discussed again on HN.

I'm not opposed to this rule for moderation, and I understand the reasoning behind it. But it seems like we're just watching the country burn and when stories like this get suppressed to make room for a new rust package manager, it makes me all nihilistic.

mfkpon Whistleblower: DOGE Siphoned NLRB Case Data

It's a separate writeup by a separate author though, and with 500+ comments, it still seems relevant. From #1 on HN to completely disappeared. Bring it back, I say.

mfkpon Whistleblower: Doge Siphoned NLRB Case Data

Ignoring the whole Russian IP stuff, this is still very concerning:

> the NxGen database contains sensitive information on unions, ongoing legal cases, and corporate secrets

> Both Amazon and Musk’s SpaceX have been suing the NLRB over complaints the agency filed in disputes about workers’ rights and union organizing

mfkpon Open source and self hostable/private file converter

mfkpon "Ensuring Accountability for All Agencies" – Executive Order

Uncommon tptacek L. "extensive internal checks" that's laughable given what's been going on lately with the executive overreach.

mfkpon Interview with Jeff Atwood, Co-Founder of Stack Overflow

Not that I'm saying Bitcoin is a solid long term investment, but you could say the same about the stock market.

mfkpon Using eSIMs with devices that only have a physical SIM slot via a 9eSIM SIM car

I've personally never tried since my phone supports e-sim but people on the internet report good findings with the 5ber card (note that you need the "Ultra" card for iPhone, the other ones are android only).
