mfieldhouse··on Google gets patent for its doodles (2011)
I like how you slipped in the use of 'doodly squat' there - very fitting.
mfieldhouse··on Airbnb refuses to hand over users' data
What benefit does having this law give? 'It also prohibits residents of certain buildings from renting their accommodations for under 30 days'
mfieldhouse··on Civet coffee: why it's time to cut the crap
Disgusting how there's scumbags out there who jump at the chance to make some quick money, even if it means destroying the lives of others.
mfieldhouse··on Microsoft needs a new CEO who probably doesn’t exist
"... the consumer space and enterprise space are connected and become more so. Microsoft needs to be strong in the consumer space to remain strong in the enterprise."

Not at all true. Cisco, Juniper, Oracle, EMC, Netapp are strong in the enterprise with virtually zero consumer presence. Or am I missing something?

mfieldhouse··on How I live and how I work
I've often seen the choice of having kids or getting married being used as a 'quick fix'. Usually for a failing relationship, insecurities or poor financial choices (benefits++). It's not always, but it can be.
mfieldhouse··on How I live and how I work
It's all relative. Take a bunch of people of a similar background as Alex, education, opportunities. Then choosing the lifestyle he has is pretty rare. And if you can cope with the tradeoffs, it is awesome - especially the long term payoffs of freedom.
mfieldhouse··on How I live and how I work
Often disease, disability and accidents are caused through poor lifestyle choices. Sometimes lots of little things add up and it's hard to see the true cause. I've not driven for 4 years so I'd say that's put me at a significantly less risk of car related accidents than someone that does.
mfieldhouse··on Show HN: Hide all Snowden-related HN links with a Greasemonkey script
Because HN isn't a politics site. In fact it's not even a tech news site. That's what the likes of mashable are for.
mfieldhouse··on Show HN: aufond.me — a résumé for the modern age [Meteor.js MVP]
My objection is what's in this for me? How is this better than writing a CV? Try something like "Stand out from the hundreds of people applying for your next dream job by telling an authentic story with aufond.me"
mfieldhouse··on A Hacker News For Ideas
Platforms for businesses to share real problems are already out there. Go sign up to forums for accountants, CPAs, real estate agents. What do they struggle with, what common themes are are there, what part of their job do they joke about loving (because they hate it so much)? Go sign up to student forums, teacher forums, landlord's forums. Buy their magazines, go to their meetups. It's all out there already.
mfieldhouse··on How to get a job after your startup fails
Cool, thanks for being open about it
mfieldhouse··on How to get a job after your startup fails
But if it made enough money to keep yourself and the others in a job then why ever declare it as a failure? Unless it didn't make enough money?
mfieldhouse··on How to get a job after your startup fails
Just for fun and to hopefully one day avoid failing in a startup, I like to do post mortems. What I understood of Vinetrade is it struggled to make any income in a market which isn't comfortable right now trading online.

1. 2/12 Launches vinetrade

2. It manages wine portfolios

3. Raises funding

Getting funding so early is an indication that early profitability was probably not the main focus. Can give a false sense of success and idea validation.

4. People already trade wine but are not using an online service to do it yet

If this is your first startup, don't try and revolutionise an industry. Let someone else blow the money and make the mistakes first. Be a fast follower instead.

5. JM talks about building an MVP

Vinetrade should be your product? Another indication of not focusing on achieving profitability and a good revenue model and pricing structure early on.

6. 3/13 Closes vinetrade. Mentions it would have needed more funding.

Funding focus again an indication of lack of focus on early idea validation through profitability.

mfieldhouse··on Fat startup: Learn the lessons of my failed Lean Startup
Right off the bat, it looks like the problem lies in 'we built a software product that simplified how nonprofits plan and measure their social and environmental impact.'. It just seems nothing was built that people wanted to pay for. The product wasn't marketed to people that have the money to pay for it and see the value in doing so. Also they got confused by thinking 'viable' is different to 'desirable'. It's the exact same thing. MVP doesn't mean what's the smallest piece of junk you can throw together and call it software. It means if you strip everything out of your idea and product, what is the one feature that customers would find useful and pay for.
mfieldhouse··on Most Startups Should be Deer Hunters
'Many start-ups (and even growth firms) lack this discipline and they therefore serve customers off all sizes. This leads to suboptimal results for all.'
mfieldhouse··on Winamp's woes: how the greatest MP3 player undid itself
maehhhh!
mfieldhouse··on Petition to stop extradition of UK hacker
Any links on Google to pirated content are an initially unavoidable byproduct of crawling the web. Whereas providing access to pirated content was this guy's core business and value proposition.
mfieldhouse··on Warren Buffett on newspapers [pdf]
I think in a way he's talking about newspapers getting back to their real roots as being genuine 'NEWS' papers. That's instead of the trashy gossip magazines that so many of them have turned in to.
mfieldhouse··on Show HN: Recruit web developers by having them build a web app
@ksat - I think it's easy to get the wrong idea of what your site is for from the heading - "...having them develop a real web application". Of course building an entire web app just to apply for a job is overkill. But it looks like that's not what you meant? I read further down the page and the examples given are more like short coding challenges. That's acceptable, and I think you need to focus your site more on filling that need. Position it as some sort of "Automated Fizzbuzz Test".
mfieldhouse··on GTar: The First Guitar That Anybody Can Play
I reckon this has mostly come about through the shift of guitar being seen as an instrument and more as a faux artistic accessory of a person's identity. Like those people who have guitars hung on their bedroom/living room walls, or on a stand but never play.
mfieldhouse··on The Coming Meltdown In College Education & Why The Economy Won’t Get Better Soon
Every time I see a discussion about university education, the wrong question is always being asked and debated: "Do you really need degree X for job Y?".

Of course domain specific knowledge and further education is a good idea. The 3 questions that need to be asked are:

1: Is it relevant to the job? 2: Could the material be learned quicker and more in depth working on the job instead? 3: Is university overpriced?

mfieldhouse··on I think bootstrapping might be impossible for non-programmers
Does this guy actually run a successful tech startup? What makes him think so? Experience? Observations? Weird that an article like this would get written and then posted on here by: 'Rob is a tech entrepreneur who moved his first company to London from the valley. He has successfully bankrupted 3 companies'.

edit/tldr: I think what I'm trying to say is, it isn't very helpful to be positioning opinions or thoughts as advice.

mfieldhouse··on 5 Years of Bad Ideas -- Python tips, tricks, and chicanery
What is meant by Python magic? What is and isn't magic? Why would you want to use it and why might it be considered a bad idea?
mfieldhouse··on Being Shy Is Just a Bad Habit, and You Can Break It With Regular Practice
Ironically, this thread has degenerated in to exactly what pg is describing. People are binding their identity to their preferred style of social interaction.

"I'm an extrovert..." "Oh well, I'm an introvert"

mfieldhouse··on Show HN: My first web app - Resumonk - A beautifully simple resume builder
What languages, libraries, hosting and database did you use? What editor was it created in and on what operating system?
mfieldhouse··on Valve is developing Steam for Linux, says Michael Larabel of Phoronix
From what I've seen, the majority of Windows gamers who are technical run pirated copies. The rest of the non-tech users who buy prebuilt PCs won't have the inclination to switchover.

For that reason and seeing that PC vendors get an adequate commission from Microsoft, it shouldn't bring any change to Microsoft's bottom line.

mfieldhouse··on Is it OK to Want to Make Money?
You're not earning money for material possesions. That's a never ending unfulfilling pursuit. Your earning money to give yourself a secure future, to be able to spend more time with people you enjoy being around, to be free to go wherever you want, do anything you want at any time without money being an issue. You're earning money for freedom and independence. Do you have the hunger now?

mfieldhouse··on Redditors who are rich (net worth $1 million+) - how did you get rich?
To sum up the average discussion about jobs and money on reddit: a victim mentality and belief that we live in the hardest time ever to get a job because of events outside of our control.
