mfi··on When the apartment listing is too good to be true
Zürich has such a big problem with apartment fraud that the police has a specific department working on just this.

I have first hand experience with a similar fraud in Zürich. I had an apartment which I looked for a new tenant to. During my search there was a ”woman” that contacted me and said that she was interested. She behaved really weirdly and couldn’t come on the showing, but requested some videos. I didn’t think more about it and send over a ”digital showing” where I showed certain parts of the apartment. We later found a new tenant and she moved in. I didn’t think more about it.

Fast forward 3 months and a random man knocks on my door during the morning. He asked if I was <insert my name>, and I said yes. He then asked if I rented out the apartment above (which was my old apartment). After explaining that we’d already found a tenant for it, he just said: ”F*ck, then I‘ve been scammed“.

It turned out that this strange ”woman” actually just used me as one side of their scam, getting credible videos where I talked and showed the apartment. The scammers then used all my ad pictures, my name and address to put up a fake ad.

He moved from Austria and paid ~2000 euro in deposit, then arrived to an apartment that was already rented out. He showed me a fradulent contract and my videos I previously sent.

After all of this, I did an image search using my apartment pictures, and found and took down 3 fake listings on different websites.

mfi··on Why Switzerland has 25 Gbit internet and America doesn't
The article was well written, really enjoyed it and I learned something as a Swiss citizen using this outlet every day! But I agree with the other commenters, I would replace the AI generated images with something else, they drag drown the articles credibility IMO
mfi··on Subscription bombing and how to mitigate it
I work the email security company xorlab[0], where my colleagues and I did a thorough analysis of real subscription/email bombing waves that we saw at our customers[1].

Here are some interesting additional information from the attacks we analyzed:

* Email bombing as a service is a thing, where you can buy 10,000 credits for $10 and easily bomb target inboxes with over 2000 emails per hour.

* Most all email bombing attacks starts in the morning, between 8-10.

* Most common day of attack is Friday

A bit of cold water on a hot pan isn't a problem, but one should be a bit careful when pouring a lot cold water on hot pans, as they can warp

mfi··on Ask HN: What are some "toy" projects you used to learn neural networks hands-on?
This is a while back, but I designed and built an AI-art installation from scratch, where I trained a GAN network to generate abstract art. The generated images was shown on a Samsung The Frame, and below the screen was a button. If you pushed the button, a new and unique piece was generated and shown on the screen.

If you're interested in doing something similar, I wrote an extensive guide of how to build it here: https://github.com/maxvfischer/DIY-ai-art.

The guide doesn't include the ML part, so that you will have to learn on your own and integrate into the project :)

I think, it total, I spend around $1100, but then I also paid for fast shipping. I think you get get that number down quite a lot by being more careful in the sourcing :)

mfi··on Show HN: Stream vinyl (any RCA) to your Sonos system using RPi and open-source
I guess people are listening to vinyl for different reasons. For me, it's not about the superior music quality of running it end-to-end analog. For me it's the ritual that I really like. Putting on this clunky record, clean it and listen to the album song by song, as the artist intended it to be listened to.

mfi··on Show HN: Stream vinyl (any RCA) to your Sonos system using RPi and open-source
I just finished my latest project here at home, setting up my vinyl player to stream to my Sonos system using a Raspberry Pi.

When looking into streaming my vinyl player to the Sonos system, I realized that the “official” way of doing this is to buy a Sonos Port, which costs >$400 where I live. So instead I spent waaayy too much time packaging a set of open-source services into a pre-built Raspberry Pi image that reads a stream from any vinyl player (RCA) and streams it to the Sonos system.

Hopefully this will simplify the setup for someone else here :)

Setup:

* It’s running on a Raspberry Pi + a USB analog to digital converter

* “pi-gen” is used to build the custom RPi image from scratch

* “Darkice” is used as a live audio streamer, reading the stream from the vinyl player

* “Icecast” is used as a streaming media server which streams the live audio from Darkice and broadcast it out in the local network.

* The Sonos speakers are then pointed to this local stream through the Sonos app.

mfi··on Ask HN: How are you using GPT to be productive?
A while back, I wrote a simple CLI-wrapper around OpenAI's API that I'm using daily (https://github.com/maxvfischer/askai). I use it as an addition to Stackoverflow to ask quick programming-related question straight in the terminal.
mfi··on Bypassing Gmail's spam filters with ChatGPT
> I’m no AI or machine learning expert so I don’t know how it works. But I am also worried that spammers could use ChatGPT to get around Gmail and Outlook’s spam filters.

This will not only increase the spam-problem, but will most likely be used to scale and do targeted phishing attack as well. I wrote an extensive article[0] where I analyzed this. And to no surprise, GPT-3 can be used to generate dynamic phishing campaigns on the fly in multiple languages, classify email responses, improve email thread hijacking attacks etc.

mfi··on Show HN: I built a simple CLI helper integrating with GPT-3

mfi··on Show HN: GPT-3 Powered Shell
That's a really neat idea!

I built askai (https://github.com/maxvfischer/askai) during the last week to scratch a similar itch of mine. I wanted to be able to quickly get CLI commands that I didn't have on top of mind, by being able to ask questions like "How do you remove a conda environment?" or "How do you get the MX record of a domain using the terminal?".

The CLI I built is a direct integration with GPT3, so it's also possible to ask it other types of questions.

mfi··on Ask HN: Resources to learn generative art programming?
Here's a generative art project I did a while back: https://github.com/maxvfischer/DIY-ai-art

It's not so much about creating the generative algorithms, but more if you wanna wrap the learning around a fun project.

mfi··on AI-art isn't art: DALL-E and other AI artists offer only the imitation of art
Last year I built an AI-art installation from scratch and posted the DIY-documentation here on HN [0][1]. A big part of why I built the installation was to stir up this exact discussion. To me, art is about emotions and making people feel, even if that feeling is their strong opinion on art.

mfi··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
Here are three hobby projects I've worked on during the last 2 years. I've written extensive guides for all of them:

mfi··on Show HN: I built a CNC-machine from scratch, using 40x 3D-printed parts
Glad you like it, most cred should go to Ivan Miranda for the core design, I just executed, updated some parts and wrote a guide around it :)

No, it's not parametric in that way. But it is possible to extend the "mill-bed" by:

* X-axis: Increase length of frame and bridge profiles. Buy longer MGN12H rails used for the X-axis.

* Y-axis: Increase length of frame profiles. Buy longer MGN12H rails used for the X-axis.

* Z-axis: Increase the vertical beams between lower and upper frame. Buying longer MGN12H rails used for the Z-axis and a longer acme rod.
