Ice Wife reminds me of Chinese migrant workers who form similar relationships on construction sites during development projects. Looks like this phenomenon is cross culture.
meyum33··on Biologists discover four new octopus species
At this point wouldn’t it be easier to artificially select for traits that make the chicken mind more tolerant of poor conditions? Like if we can have consciousless chicken then it wouldn’t matter the condition they grow under?
meyum33··on It’s Official, Apple Kills Web Apps in the EU
It weird so many young people do most of their work on iPhone, including producing videos, photos, and text. Yet when it comes to iPads most people don't want to touch it for work.
meyum33··on To all the newspapers I loved
Man, I just got to read a paper edition of The Economist today. What a lovely experience. The crisp sound of paper, flipping through the pages with my own fingers, direct, effective, focused. All my memory neurons that wired together reading The Economist during my college years in those quite weekend mornings fired ferociously together. I can't even imagine how any gadget will ever beat it.
meyum33··on Car insurance in America is too cheap
I’ve always thought that we should have a reverse matrix LED headlight: it directs flashing high beam only to incoming cars with flood lights or high beam, while leaving those driving properly unaffected.
meyum33··on Why I Threw Away My Apple Watch
Love the Apple Watch. But yeah battery is huge drag to the otherwise lovely experience. It's barely enough to start with. Now after three years, at 79% of original capacity, it's become annoying. I actually cannot think of a watchOS function that can't be done in monocrhome. I miss my old Fitbit which could be charged during a shower before lasting almost a week.

In my country where the police has a LOT of power I'm more worried about inadvertently getting my relatives arrested for old closet crimes. Am I being too dramatic?
meyum33··on Ilya Sutskever "at the center" of Altman firing?
When the iPhone 14 Pro came out, I was reminded of Nokia's supersampling 41MP camera, along with wireless charging, OIS, night mode, and other things Nokia shipped very early with Windows Phone. Now looking back, there was no guarantee that adopting Android would've given Nokia any enduring advantage. Where's HTC now? Does anybody even remember it? With Windows at least there's another chance of being bailed out by Microsoft. It's probably the better choice for shareholders.
meyum33··on Apple announces that RCS support is coming to iPhone next year
So all Apple has to do is to change bubble color to indicate your messages, though no longer through SMS, is insecure.
meyum33··on CIA's failed attempt to bribe Lee Kuan Yew
There could be another way to look at it though. Xi and Putin would happily do the same: the countries are theirs.
meyum33··on iPhone 15 Pro with X70 modem offers up to 24% faster 5G speeds
Cars aren’t that hard to make. Just look at Chinese EV brands growing like weed. But unless Apple had something entirely different to offer - hard to imagine it would be anything other than full autonomous driving - why bother going into a market where margins are thin and moats are nil?
meyum33··on The English cottage where John le Carré wrote Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
I still dream of seeing this version of Smiley's People one day.
meyum33··on China Bans iPhone Use for Government Officials at Work
They’ve banned Teslas from government compounds and big state-owned companies for a few years. There are even occasional reports of Tesla cars being diverted from certain roads for reasons the police wouldn’t disclose.

Edit: It could be retaliations against US sanctions. But there’s a difference: All these kinds of orders are made without any written documents. These are just part of the general decline of the rule of law in China, which there weren’t much to begin with.
