metta2uall··on Australia’s vague anti-encryption law sets a dangerous new precedent
I expect they won't ask for anything crazy like that or violate the prohibition on asking for a "systemic weakness" - one of the reasons being that they want this law to be deployed as smoothly as possible to make a good case study for their 5-Eyes mates.

There will always be some criminals who are sophisticated enough to evade surveillance (until they make a mistake) - but that doesn't mean it's useless as many violent and/or organised criminals do get caught. Many get caught even with old-fashioned phone taps.

Also, aren't there ways of implementing targeted surveillance without weakening privacy/security very much, if at all? For example, targeting a specific user/device and making sure all exfiltrated data is encrypted with a public key belonging to the police.

How about we take a bigger-picture view than the implementation flaws of this super-rushed law and ask what is to be done about encrypted messages that allow many serious criminals to circumvent traditional police powers of search & surveillance? I think society as a whole will not accept criminals having such an advantage. So I think alternative laws have to be suggested & promoted, otherwise potentially really bad ones are likely to get passed everywhere..

Hasn't the FBI already done this years ago?

Well, I'd much rather spies from the 5 Eyes read my emails than spies from the Communist Party of China..

Yes, one needs to be careful and get good medical advice. Testosterone also has a link to prostate cancer, where one of the main treatments is blocking it (androgen deprivation therapy). There doesn't seem to be strong evidence it causes prostate cancer [1-3], but unless there is compelling reasons to try testosterone one can be careful & try other things first (starting with exercise, meditation, mindful walking). Also, even if one has "low" testosterone levels it may be that one's androgen receptors are more sensitive to it.

metta2uall··on Five Eyes' Statement of Principles on Access to Evidence and Encryption
Privacy is not the same as free speech - the thoughts are still yours but can be monitored if there is a threat to public safety as judged by our judicial system (which by all means should be continuously improved). Most individual rights are not absolute - we can be detained if suspected of having a dangerous disease, we're not allowed to shout "there's a bomb!", we can be followed & our homes searched if we're suspected of criminality by a judge, our children can be taken away if we severely neglect our responsibilities to them, etc...
metta2uall··on Five Eyes' Statement of Principles on Access to Evidence and Encryption
The issues with encryption technologies is a separate matter to the prosecution of large-scale criminality & the closure of white-collar loopholes - both of which of course we need much more of. Saying we're ignoring the alligator is quite an exaggeration though, and access to communications (with a court order) would be very useful to large-scale criminal cases, including in working up the chain. Many international paedophile rings have been successfully caught out.

This is just false - shipping contributes only 2-3% of global emissions (see e.g. http://theconversation.com/the-shipping-sector-is-finally-on...).
metta2uall··on When Is Haskell More Useful Than R or Python in Data Science?
IMHO F# is another contender in this space. It's a functional language with a lot of nice features, tools and support for the whole .NET ecosystem (though compared to Haskell it does lack certain 'advanced' features like higher kinded types). Some packages are listed at https://fsharp.org/guides/data-science/

I find FSharp.Data especially to be amazing for productivity.

metta2uall··on A central extended amygdala circuit that modulates anxiety
Knowing more detail about anxiety circuits in mice is very very far from helping people living with anxiety disorders.. More research on improving existing human treatments that are known to work well for many people seems to be more justifiable..
metta2uall··on A central extended amygdala circuit that modulates anxiety
Whilst this is quite interesting, I struggle to see how the animal suffering and the human brainpower + effort + resources required to do this work is justified..
