metta2uall··on Python farming as flexible efficient agricultural food security
Wouldn't it be more efficient to convert waste proteins into fertiliser for plants? Plus, while the article makes much of the python's ability to withstand periods of scarcity, I would think storing grains/beans would be even better... for example, properly stored grains/beans aren't vulnerable to respiratory infections..
metta2uall··on A seafood firm wants to farm octopus. Activists say they're too smart for that
Quite odd to label people trying to end horrific violence as "militants"...

And is it really outlandish to want to stop hurting animals that really are similar to cats, dogs and yes, us humans, at least as far as the ability to perceive pain and basic emotions. Perhaps the propaganda is actually that it is okay for non-human animals to endure horrific suffering, just so that some humans can spend a few minutes "enjoying" the taste of their flesh or breast-milk.. (the production of which also requiring huge amounts of plant-based feed, which significantly contributes to deforestation & methane emissions)

metta2uall··on 'Like we were lesser humans': Gaza boys, men recall Israeli arrest, torture
I certainly don't excuse Hamas - they are a despicable & evil terrorist organisation - and more evil than the IDF. This is quite obvious and uncontroversial though, so people often don't bother pointing this out.

If you launch a rocket from your kitchen on the 12th floor, I am allowed to defend myself, but not by flattening the entire building and killing a hundred innocent children, when you have probably gone to another building or tunnel.

There are many reporters in Gaza who are documenting the thousands of dead & injured children..

metta2uall··on 'Like we were lesser humans': Gaza boys, men recall Israeli arrest, torture
The vast majority civilians are getting killed & buried alive due to the aerial bombings where the IDF is trying to assassinate members of Hamas - they obviously don't give any warnings for such strikes.

And the current offensive isn't a response to the rockets, which have been fired for years, but to the Hamas ground invasion, which the IDF should have been prepared for 24/7 & could have completely defeated.

metta2uall··on 'Like we were lesser humans': Gaza boys, men recall Israeli arrest, torture
"Their ancestors lost their homes when they needlessly started, and then lost, a war" - the Palestinian villagers did not start any wars - the war was started by the rulers of neighboring states...
metta2uall··on 'Like we were lesser humans': Gaza boys, men recall Israeli arrest, torture
The IDF actually can avoid the vast majority of civilian casualties - they are the ones choosing to drop a huge number of bombs. They can do their job of defending Israel by actually protecting the border, and go after Hamas in a much slower & more precise way.

See this article from Israel for an in-depth examination of IDF tactics: https://www.972mag.com/mass-assassination-factory-israel-cal...

metta2uall··on Ask HN: What are you passionate about at the moment?
Encouraging everyone to try going vegan - it can greatly reduce the amount of animal abuse and environmental damage in our world - plus these days it's easier than ever with loads of high-quality information on nutrition and recipes.

I recently made this webapp: https://foodchoices.app

metta2uall··on Karaniya Metta Sutta: The Buddha's Words on Loving-Kindness
I love how this sutta makes it clear what its definition of pure love is (wishing that everyone is well, unconditionally), and that this should be cultivated towards all beings, including animals.

Sadly though most Buddhist laypeople are not vegan, though some popular teachers like Thich Nhat Hanh did promote minimising the suffering of animals via such practical means as making vegan choices..

Regarding meditation, Ajahn Brahm from the Thai Forest Tradition has taught extensively not just focused Metta Meditation, but how Metta (i.e. love/acceptance) towards the present moment is a key part of other techniques like meditation of breathing. One of his books, "Kindfulness", really gets into this.

metta2uall··on How many medical studies are faked or flawed?
But work in social sciences will often be inherently harder to replicate due to, for example, groups of human beings being more complex than groups of proteins - so there are a lot more variables, confounding factors, difficulties doing double-blind randomised trials, and so on...
metta2uall··on Intel QuickAssist Technology Zstandard Plugin for Zstandard
Interesting that Intel's code for this includes numerous references to LZ4, as if that's the actual algorithm the hardware originally aimed to accelerate.. So seems like LZ4 and ZSTD are quite similar?

metta2uall··on Elixir – Why the dot when calling anonymous functions?
F# is also part of the OCaml family, has a great to-JS transpiler (https://fable.io/) and F# code can also be used in .NET projects.
metta2uall··on Bram Moolenaar has died
Much gratitude to Bram for being such an inspiration - not just developing a super-useful project but thinking about how his work can be of benefit to the most needy. All his good works continue on!
metta2uall··on Apple Introduces M2 Ultra
"Better for the Environment"...

What's even better for the environment is not buying a new computer unless it's actually necessary.. my refurbished M1 Air 8GB still works great - I can comfortably run a Debian VM with Vivaldi & VS Code (doing .NET development), and when I need a GPU for a few hours a month I just use a cloud instance.

metta2uall··on The Leverage of LLMs for Individuals
There is also https://nat.dev - $5 with no expiry
metta2uall··on I wish GPT4 had never happened
Just imagine how much tech debt can be generated by an overuse of GPTs... One concerning scenario is if software needed for e.g. garbage collection or food warehousing has some critical bug, but the AIs can't fix it, and the human employees (and even consultants) have a very hard time figuring out what's going on too..
metta2uall··on React is holding me hostage
Thanks, I wasn't aware RTK now has a saga-like "listener" feature - will look into it!

What I like about sagas are their simplicity & power (once one understands how generators & effects work), plus the eventChannel feature which lets one integrate with non-redux events. Good TypeScript support is a problem though, and I've had to resort to typed-redux-saga :/

metta2uall··on React is holding me hostage
In my experience redux-toolkit + redux-saga for async stuff usually work really well. In case of performance problems one can go with profiling + targeted optimisations (e.g. a separate store, some locally managed state).
metta2uall··on Bard and new AI features in Search
"Google killer" is hyperbole, but I think Google does have a challenge since chat-based search may be much harder to monetise & thus less profitable. One reason is because people are used to having ads on the search results page, but ChatGPT presents itself as a human advisor, and in this context I suppose people would be quite unhappy to have ads injected into their conversation.
metta2uall··on Tech mogul Bryan Johnson, 45, spends $2Myr to achieve 18-year-old body
TRT by the way comes with likely risks such as heart disease & turbocharging any existing prostate cancer
metta2uall··on HTML with Superpowers: An Introduction to Web Components
I've found Web Components to be a very nice way of adding interactivity to a server-rendered application (e.g. server-side Blazor). Lit works quite well and has options to avoid an extra build step (https://lit.dev/docs/getting-started/#use-bundles)
metta2uall··on Ask HN: What's the most important problem in the world? Are you working on it?
You're right, although farmed animals eating grass has its own complexities such as deforestation, low yield per hectare, methane emissions & "non-arable land" actually being a vague/relative category where hardy food crops like alfalfa can often be grown. But overall if the world moved to exclusively grass-fed meat it would be a massive improvement.
metta2uall··on Ask HN: What's the most important problem in the world? Are you working on it?
The limited compassion of human beings.. Most people don't care that much unless they're directly affected. This limits the willingness of society to do what's arguably in our best interests, like preventing severe environmental problems by limiting unnecessary consumption, or contributing to a culture where we help provide everyone with basic necessities like food - we may be the ones needing help in the future. I think not caring that much for others also contributes to meaninglessness, unhappiness, and mental health problems.

I don't know the solution, but am trying to "work on it" through e.g. donations & vegan advocacy - I think reducing the abuse of animals in factory farms is a "low-hanging fruit" for reducing suffering & ecological problems - it's usually much more efficient to eat plants directly instead of feeding them to animals.

metta2uall··on The i3-gaps project has been merged with i3
Yep, I'm also grateful to have discovered i3, only several years ago for me. Thanks to its low memory usage it's helped me save a decent amount of money as I'm able to easily develop on a Linux VM running on an 8GB M1 and don't need to upgrade to 16GB.
metta2uall··on How to get 1.5 TFlops of FP32 performance on a single M1 CPU core
I was "compelled" to get MacOS as I develop an iOS app using flutter. I needed a lightweight power-efficient laptop so got a second-hand 8GB M1 and can fairly comfortably develop (VSCode + dotnet + nodejs + many tabs in firefox) inside a Debian VM running i3 with zram & UTM... Perhaps it depends on how memory-hungry one's development actually is - a massive Java Eclipse project might not work nearly as well.
metta2uall··on How the marijuana ‘green rush’ fell apart
Sadly the vast majority do not..
metta2uall··on Bunny AI
Please, lets not waste electricity & emit more CO2 for the sake of unnecessary eye-candy..
metta2uall··on Effectivealtruism.org purchased a £15M estate for its headquarters in 2021
I find this very disappointing - to me one of the main points of EA is trying to maximise proven effectiveness & minimising unnecessary overheads. Where is the evidence that hosting so many in-person conferences is much more effective than a rare large in-person conference + many "mini-conferences" online?

There are still many organisations that seem to be doing excellent work aligned with the EA ethos. The Life You Can Save, GiveWell and Animal Charity Evaluators are still updating their charity reviews. I hope the brand damage doesn't reduce their donations!

metta2uall··on VSCode-Neovim: Use embedded Neovim in VSCode without emulation
Also check out the VSpaceCode extension bundle - it reduces the need to use the mouse, but unfortunately not completely.
metta2uall··on “Judas goats” were once key players in meatpacking plants
Thanks for sharing.. While we can admire & protect many aspects of nature, there's no reason for us to take other animals as our role-models..
metta2uall··on “Judas goats” were once key players in meatpacking plants
Our tastes mostly come from our distant ancestors. Some of them are clearly harmful in the modern world, e.g. people eating too much delicious sugar leading to obesity, diabetes, etc.

Just as we evolved to mostly eat cooked meat rather than raw meat, we can also evolve to stop eating killed meat altogether.. A more environmentally sustainable & compassionate world is critically important for our future well-being (and possibly survival).
