metrix··on New Economic Challenges and the Fed's Monetary Policy Review
My understanding is that the inflation is causing skyrocketing asset values, it just hasn't trickled down into the economy.

i'm using Google Sheets for a Coronavirus Tracker http://amarillo.land/coronavirus.html but i'm not enthused with the performance. This looks very interesting!
metrix··on Ask HN: How do we stop the polarization/toxicicity filling the web?
I really like your comment, I don't know what the end goal is? Does that mean we should never try to give our opinion? Maybe I don't understand.. I think it would be a good thing if every individual with their beliefs is slowly normalizing others to their feelings and beliefs.

I would flash it with Tasmota, but these sensors are cheap/awesome: https://www.amazon.com/Sonoff-Temperature-Humidity-Controlle...

metrix··on How AMD Won, Then Lost
According to this article, Zen has not taped out yet:

Devinder Kumar, AMD CFO : Zen was a clean sheet design that started a few years ago. We are in the final stage of executing and you know the milestone that you want to hear us talk about is Zen taping out, which should be over the next several months, and then putting samples in the hands of our customers and then starting first full year of revenue in 2017. And by the way, because we have this reuse approach for cores, you will see us with Zen cores in the high-end desktops first and then the servers from our overall products standpoint.

metrix··on Bup – towards the perfect backup
I think naming backups and archiving the old files should be separate applications - that could be generic to whatever backup tool you decide to use.
metrix··on Alaskans vote to legalize marijuana
Profitable? It costs the state a lot to hold a prisoner.
metrix··on The Human Factor – the 2009 crash of Air France Flight 447
I can see the day when teenagers can't drive a non-automated car, just like most people today have a hard time driving a vehicle with a standard transmission. It wasn't that long ago that everyone had to know how to drive a standard.
metrix··on Firefox 31.0
I have the same issue in Windows 7, but have not found what exactly causes it. I work around the issue by highlighting the incorrectly rendered text with the mouse.
metrix··on Neovim's Next Feature Poll
It seems to be in a working state, and loads VERY fast. But I haven't tried modifying the nvimrc or use plugins.
metrix··on Apple's Cyclone Microarchitecture Detailed
This sounds like it is ripe for a Semi-custom chip from AMD, where they sell an ARM/X86 SOC

"the CPU/GPU latency cost is going to be close to the original CPU evaluation time."

Have you looked into HSA architecture that helps to remove this latency? I think this is the direction Intel will move to in a few years.
metrix··on Mistakes Programmers Make when Starting in Machine Learning
Do you have it on a website or github? I would be interested in taking a look at it.
metrix··on Mistakes Programmers Make when Starting in Machine Learning
I got into machine learning through an article off of HN stating that Random forests would get you 80% of the way (I think they were right!) For my purposes rotation forest increased my accuracy considerably. I have a few questions:

1. I have found that data manipulation and feature creation from a SQL database is harder than the actually using an algorithm, and knowing how to extract and aggregate data seemed to be more like "throw something at the wall and see what sticks" Do you have any suggestions or information on knowing how to extract the best data?

2. After getting a random forest going, I had a hard time figuring out which algorithm to try next, or how to figure out what would work best for my dataset. Any suggestions on how to take the next step?

metrix··on AMD launches Kaveri processors aimed at starting a computing revolution
Scheduling and waiting overhead? What waiting?
metrix··on AMD launches Kaveri processors aimed at starting a computing revolution
There is no OS level support, and there is nothing that rewrites existing libraries but I am hoping that programming languages themselves (Ruby, Python) get optimizations built in. An example would be hash lookups in Ruby: Why couldn't the GPU do this for us in certain use cases? You could see large performance increases for all apps written for the language with no code changes needed for thousands of developers.
metrix··on Postgres on the GPU
You go with OpenCL so that you can use AMD's Fusion processor that will start will soon allow a GPU and CPU to share main memory.
metrix··on Postgres on the GPU
Postgres on the GPU just screams HSA http://hsafoundation.com and more importantly AMD and their upcoming Kaveri processor. which will significantly reduce the latency of performing GPU calculations since the CPU and GPU will share the same cache.
