Working as a software engineer using C, C++, Python, Scheme on simulation and optimization tools and applications in the meterology/satellite data processing/atmospheric sciences domain. I'm fond of the Lisp family of languages, and am currently working on Scheme-bindings for our modeling, simulation, and analysis tools.

Furthermore, I'd imagine that the host might be required to retain those records for law enforcement purposes (imagine if someone made death threats, etc and law enforcement requested those records for an investigation).
metaobject··on NVIDIA Develops NVLink Switch: NVSwitch, 18 Ports For DGX-2
You can't spend your way out of the latency issues associated with such a distributed architecture, though.

That's one of things NVLink helps with, actually.

In addition to the info itself being valuable to them, metadata such as the age of the info is also an important attribute to consider when placing a value on this info.

This is done for weather satellites, btw. See: the existing family of GOES satellites as well as for the newest family of GOES sats.
metaobject··on Splash of Color: Instance Segmentation with Mask R-CNN and TensorFlow
For people familiar with Mask R-CNN, how might this model be used to detect clouds (in the sky) in all-sky imager data? An all-sky imager is basically a camera with a fisheye lens, mounted on the ground, and facing the sky. Assume training data is available on a pixel-by-pixel basis and is classified as either: (sky, cloud)

Since clouds are amorphous, it seems there would be problems trying to feed training data to the model. Could one simply use the entire training image by specifying the bounding box to the cloud to be the entire image bounds?

I'm exploring new models, having already tried Fully Convolutional DenseNet with semi-satisfactory results (but with very large GPU memory footprint).

metaobject··on The tiny red dots taking over our lives
I prefer to do everything I can from my browser. I think it's silly to have apps for evey single facet of life. Every time I go to a news/shopping/etc website, it wants me to open/install their app. What is the advantage of having multiple news apps, multiple social network apps, multiple shopping apps over just using a browser?
metaobject··on Is vitamin D really a cure-all, and how should we get our fix?
Presumably because evolution has selected genetic mutations which have provided protection against the amount of UV radiation people get in those geographic areas.

metaobject··on Atari 8 Bit Computers FAQ
I had an Atari 800 XL(?) and I loved Miner 2049er. My favorite game, by far, though was Behind the Jaggi Lines (so?) where you had to save downed pilots on an alien planet.
metaobject··on Triplebyte Raises $10M from Initialized Capital, Marissa Mayer and Paul Graham
I'm inclined to believe that measuring performance is fairly subjective. However, in an attempt to put some numbers behind a performance score, you might have some combination of individual weighted scores that involve things like:

(1) length of time employed at the company

(2) some measure of the performance feedback the engineer receives in their annual review - which may include percentage salary increase (possibly subjective, though)

(3) a score compiled by surveying the employees' peers (again, possibly subjective)

(4) the overall TripleByte turnover rate at said company

(5) the market average for any/all of (1)-(4)

metaobject··on How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the State Machine
I realize Lippert holds more knowledge about OOP and programming in his spleen than I have in my brain, but he mentions in the first post that the first attempt violates C# rules. But, if working in C++, the interface could specify either (Weapon & weapon) or (Weapon * weapon) could it not?

metaobject··on I don’t understand Graph Theory
I'm struggling with some issues right now where I'm finding that I'm much more productive in the late afternoon/evening than I am during the daylight hours. I'm a telecommuting software engineer, and it's somewhat important that I be available during core business hours (9AM-4PM) yet I find that I just am unable to focus and get into my work during the day only to leave much of my work left to be done during the evening. My work is very challenging and interesting, so i do not believe it's a boredom issue.

I've been thinking about whether it has to do with the daylight/sunlight and my inability to "settle down" and concentrate when it's light outside. This "condition" is causing me to stay up late and lose hours of sleep per night. I've been thinking about going to see a psychologist or therapist to see wtf I can do to rectify the situation.

metaobject··on A Clojure learning journey
To what extent does the Python GIL hold it back from performing multithreaded tasks as compared to Clojure? I'm mostly a Python programmer but I've experimented with Clojure a few times for some small projects, and I've noticed the multithreading options with Clojure to be more plentiful and capable.
metaobject··on Like Peter Thiel, Tech Workers Feel Alienated by Silicon Valley ‘Echo Chamber’
I'm pretty sure this is incorrect. SV has been host to tech companies (for the varying definitions of "tech") throughout the decades, from early processor and PC companies, video game companies, early internet companies, and Web 2.0 companies.

metaobject··on Just what does “code as data” mean anyway? (2014)
And I'm just pointing this out for those who aren't already aware -- C macros and Lisp macros aren't really comparable.

C macros are implemented as string substitutions in a separate step before compilation. Lisp macros can make use of the rest of the language features and allow for operations on the abstract syntax tree of the code, opening up things like adding new control constructs, generating boilerplate code, string substitution, and the creation of domain specific languages.

metaobject··on The unnecessary demise of Barnes and Noble
That was 15 years ago, though -- a veritable millennium in the internet age. Although Amazon was around, a lot of people still accessed the internet over a cable modem (or even dial-up!) or some other technology which didn't provide ubiquitous internet access. Most people surfed the internet from their desktop, as opposed to using their phones from a wide variety of places from the couch to the toilet.

What can be easier than using the Amazon search bar? And as far as upwelling goes, Amazon's ML-driven 'suggestions' algorithm results often seem to interest me.

My software development experience lies far outside of the web/mobile app development world, so perhaps this idea already exists...

Similar to how PG and RTM created Viaweb (a web application that allowed non-technical people to build online e-commerce sites), are there any sites/tools which allow non-technical people develop non-trivial retail/online purchasing iPhone/Android apps?

metaobject··on Building and Running a Geographically Distributed Engineering Team
I work from home 3 days of the week and usually go into the office twice a week. In every location I've worked (we tend to get moved about every two years), I invariably end up standing on my desk to twist some/most of the fluorescent tube lights directly over/around my desk so they disengage and go dark. The only challenge then is fending off well-intentioned facilities personnel who want to replace the "failed" light.
metaobject··on QUIC as a solution to protocol ossification
We did some experiments a few years ago when we were trying to quickly move several large-ish (30GB I think?) climate and weather data files around on Internet2 and we found that UDT solved our problems quite nicely.

I wonder whether, along with the rollout of the infrastructure needed to support mass AVs, the govt will just be adding in traffic surveillance cameras as well? It seems to me that the infrastructure to support mass AV traffic would involve lots of sensors, cameras, and other electronic devices.
