Those of us who love computers need to have something slightly wrong with us, an irrationality to our rationality, a way to deny all the evidence of our eyes and ears that the hostile box of silicon is dead and unyielding. And fashion by cunning machinery the illusion that it lives.

The journey is not based on increasing success
    Rather in increasing awareness
You are here to discover the deepest truth
    About yourself
All the things you think is wrong with you
Is just a doorway to the discovery
    Of your strength
Where I was searching for the meaning
    I found myself instead
    Release yourself
    To the unknown

Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. metadat··on Windows 11½
Win XP was peak computing for the masses, and most didn’t have a clue!
metadat··on Eating Fruit Skins
It depends on the variety, some kiwi skins are tick and hairy, while others exteriors are thin and smooth.
metadat··on
No Man's Sky Cosmos
Totally agree. But I'm still wondering why was Escape Velocity so fun yet NMS is a nothing burger? They are very similar, except EV was goofier.
metadat··on Muse Spark 1.3
It's more like Anthropic present themselves in a deceptive way. I was confused at first too until someone on HN clued me in!

Humans naturally want SOMEONE to be the good guy! Sad story, in this instance.

metadat··on Show HN: Running 104GB Qwen3.8-Flash-Next on 48GB Mac with at ~12 tok/s
Nice.. and how many toks/sec?
metadat··on GLM-5.3-Flash
Qwen 3.8 27B is around Opus 4.8 level of capability on the Agentic Intelligence Index (52 vs 57). In my testing the locally hosted Qwen is good enough that looking at a given piece of work output I couldn't tell you which model was behind it.

metadat··on The entire city of San Francisco as a video game
I checked some obscure buildings and I found every one of them in-game, but you're correct that it's not 1:1 topographically.
metadat··on The entire city of San Francisco as a video game
That was actually Watchdogs 2. Great game, basically GTA but you are a hacker in the Bay Area. The SF portion of the map was accurate down to every building.

metadat··on Generic Methods in Go 1.27
Yes, though it's non-idiomatic and in my experience, rare to encounter in the wild for anything you'd actually want to use.
metadat··on Google has acquired the data of failed US airline Spirit
$1,200, wow that is pricey!
metadat··on Qwen3.8-27B at 256K on a 24GB RTX PRO 4000 SFF (432 GB/s): 50 tok/s with MTP
The article mentions Q4, Q5, Q8, and NVFP4. It's total AI slop though, tough read.

In my testing I got 150 tokens/sec with a single 5090 RTX.

metadat··on Corgi kills short-lived website that ranked its female employees
If corgi distances the company from this, is it a net positive from a PR perspective? I’d never heard of or thought a second about Corgi until now.
metadat··on Qwen 3.8 27B
You may be able to run a quantized version. One strategy I've found effective is to set Claude or Codex loose on the problem and they'll do a decent job setting up the best possible model revision.
metadat··on Qwen 3.8 27B
How can you say this when you haven't even tried it yet? Is it just hypothetical vibes?
metadat··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
I still miss Battlefield 2. There is really nothing like it today, not even close. The dynamics with squads and a commander and A+ physics and overall game balance remain unmatched for all FPS games.

Fortnite, PUBG, COD, all are disgraceful in comparison.

metadat··on Assembly Hall of Shame
Does responsiveness get better or worse with updates, in general?
metadat··on Assembly Hall of Shame
It’s crazy how computers still seem to get perceivably slow every few years, given how many instructions can be executed in 1ms. Shameful, even..

What’s that law called about programmers wasting all the compute on abstraction?

metadat··on AMD acquires Taalas to boost inference performance by etching models in silicon
What would tokens/sec performance look like for a reasoning model? An order of magnitude slower?

metadat··on Half-Life ported to Mac OS 9
That is an amazing story. I grew up with a weak performa 560 and was constantly browsing the aisles at Fry’s Electronics looking for games. None of them supported Mac, especially 25MHz 68k!
metadat··on Should you wash your solar panels?

Source? This is gold.
metadat··on git's –end-of-options Flag
Does anyone know why git broke the long standing convention of "--" early on? Kind of a nightmare for humans to use.

Remembering app-specific one-offs is kind of the worst!

metadat··on Nobody knows what a used GPU cluster is worth
Invite-only is only for special edition hypercars and halo models. Standard models can be purchased by anyone with the funds and desire.
metadat··on I wrote an bash enumerator because I was sick of xargs
Every time I’ve used Gnu Parallel on a new system it required accepting a Eula, which is annoying. I stick to xargs -P99 these days and am happier.
