metadaemon··on Trading cards with e-ink displays (2023)
I'd imagine this is a direct Kabbalah reference since they goes on to talk about implementing Tarot.
metadaemon··on Nintendo leak:employee accessing private YouTube videos
Despite the laws in place I've seen questionable stuff over the course of my career.
metadaemon··on Auto-brewery syndrome in a 50-year-old woman
A very notorious antibiotic for its plethora of side-effects.
metadaemon··on The Case Against Gmail (2020)
Been paying for Migadu for a few years now. No complaints, love it.
metadaemon··on It's always TCP_NODELAY
I'd just love a protocol that has a built in mechanism for realizing the other side of the pipe disconnected for any reason.
metadaemon··on Bees and chimps can also pass on their skills
I can't remember where I read it, but I remember a similar study with rats. Previous generations were shocked when interacting with something specific. Current generations seemingly already knew not to interact with that object. I think they even expounded to study the effects on rats born within an entirely different locale too.
metadaemon··on Atuin – Magical shell history
Agreed, I use this in conjunction with Starship [1], both initialized specifically for Fish in the config. I love this shell so much.

metadaemon··on Atuin – Magical shell history
Used as a daily driver for a couple years now. Love it!!
metadaemon··on Neovide – A simple, no-nonsense, cross-platform GUI for Neovim
This is also occurring on my Mac
metadaemon··on Contra Wirecutter on the IKEA air purifier (2022)
As someone who had zero knowledge of this and isn't trying to be snarky, do you have a link to that? I searched around and found some stuff, but it's pretty old.
metadaemon··on Web Components Eliminate JavaScript Framework Lock-In
It's a very complex problem to solve and I think a lot of people need to accept that. There will never be a simple solution with a low learning curve that's actually performant for non-trivial applications without a fundamental shift in browser technology.
metadaemon··on An attempted taxonomy of web components
We've got an issue right now with Ionic components (for React) which are Web Components under the hood.

Seems like each component has its own shadow DOM that gets fired up. This would be fine under normal circumstances, but we use a tool called Cohere (now Cardina after the Ramp acquisition) which listens to the DOMContentLoaded [1] event.

Looking at flame graphs, this event, when fired, seems to cause Cohere to traverse the DOM. This becomes very expensive when you are loading something like an Ionic grid, with lots of rows and columns. Unfortunately this Cohere code lives within a dynamic JS module that they load at runtime, which is proprietary, so there isn't a way to submit a PR to change the behavior.

I'd love if someone knew more about that event in the context of the shadow DOM in particular. Perhaps there is a way to limit its invocation through the Web Component API.

metadaemon··on Show HN: DataSheetGrid, an Airtable-like React component
Actually looks good for me on FF iOS
metadaemon··on Web components will outlive JavaScript frameworks
Complexity has to exist somewhere, either in the engineer's hands, or swept under the rug for the framework to perform its magic on (really thinking about the Rails ecosystem here). When things go wrong, it's nicer, in my opinion, to have more control, especially in this fast paced clients-want-it-now environment.
metadaemon··on Atlas of Surveillance: Documenting police tech in our communities
In my experience the cops using these systems only care about larger crimes. It's way too noisy to monitor every expired tag, for instance. Not many of these companies (if any) do speed monitoring with LPRs.
metadaemon··on Atlas of Surveillance: Documenting police tech in our communities
My company has a strict 30-day policy, irrelevant plates are never recorded either. But yeah I agree, some of the bigger players are pretty loosey goosey with their privacy policies.
metadaemon··on Atlas of Surveillance: Documenting police tech in our communities
ALPRs are totally fair play IMO -- if that's their only function. I'd rather have a robot triage criminal activity than a biased human. Facial recognition, however, is 100% the wrong move.
metadaemon··on Live near your friends
I swear there was a study in this same vein a few years back that looked into the effects of having siblings in close proximity and the effect it had on your mental health, even if you never visited. I can't find it for the life of me now though.
metadaemon··on Ask HN: How to do literal web searches after Google destroyed the “ ” feature?
Happy customer here! Been paying for a year with no complaints. Amazing search engine -- kind of like how Google used to be years ago before they started injecting more ads into search.
metadaemon··on Hacker News Guidelines
These are great guidelines in general for building a healthy community.
metadaemon··on Most promoted and blocked domains among Kagi Search users
I feel the same way. I've been a very happy customer without any desire for going back to other search providers.
metadaemon··on Overture Maps Foundation releases open map dataset
Hey, want to say I'm super excited by protomaps. I'm struggling a bit to convert existing OSM pbf files into the pmtiles format. Specifically, I'm trying to convert this guy https://daylightmap.org/

Do you have any tips for doing so without renting memory in the cloud?

metadaemon··on Important Coding Habits
Just what an AI would say... /s
metadaemon··on The Odyssey by Homer, Translated by Samuel Butler
Amazing! Thank you.
metadaemon··on The deadly “dancing plague” of 1518
I don’t think I could resist, I love dancing more than a lot of things.
metadaemon··on Zoom fatigue unpacked
When it’s not blisteringly hot out we actually will take a 30-45 minute walk around midday. Helps a ton and has a side effect of allowing my subconscious to solve the problems I’ve been stuck on.
metadaemon··on No CSS Club
Maybe I’m in the minority, but I enjoy the modern web for the most part. I’d be pretty upset if HTML was the only formatting we were allowed.
metadaemon··on A third of North America’s birds have vanished
Yeah, really the only top-down solution that would be effective against the worst offenders is their permanent cessation.
metadaemon··on Sleeping through the technical interview (2022)
I was going to link to this as it immediately rang similar in my mind!
metadaemon··on Exit Hector, again and again: How different translators reveal the ‘Iliad’ anew
I really like the /r/AcademicBiblical/ community on Reddit for these kinds of things. I'm also much more into the spiritual and mystical aspects of Christianity, which, IMO, were either obfuscated or intentionally removed. Couple this with the wide range of translations and you get a boring result.
