messel··on How to persuade corporate IT into making your next computer upgrade an Apple
It was a bit mangled when I posted it earlier, and still needs some fine tuning, appreciate the feedback. WP repeated and cut out a section on Publishing, but here's the gist:

I highly doubt that one uniform operating system will dominate enterprise computer networks in the coming decade the way windows has done so historically. Linux and other unix variants (BSD) are ubiquitous for web development platforms. Mac OS X is the developer and design operating system of choice among many talented professionals. Often times windows support will come later (or never) compared to nix alternatives. A strong advantage of compiling source and scripting tools on Mac OS X, is that the transition from OS X to other unix systems is usually simpler than from Windows to any flavor of nix or vice versa (with cygwin/mingw).

This year I’m up for a replacement for my desktop system at work and after completing the conversion to Apple last year at home, I decided it would also server as the ideal setup at work as well. I transitioned my home desktop from Ubuntu 10.04 to Mac OS X Snow Leopard and really enjoy the polished interface, system stability, and ease of installations for development and practical home software (Homebrew helped). My recent experiences with Apple personal computers makes them far and away the best personal computers I’ve ever had the pleasure of using for a variety of applications (development, design, gaming, web browsing, and reading).

messel··on How I Found a Co-Founder, Built a Prototype, and Raised $5M in Less Than 4 Weeks
What the author didn't dig into was the selection of core groups, and how we choose a group that best serves us as individuals and that we can best contribute to.

How does one move between core groups, how many can you be an active member of at once?

messel··on Shortchanging Your Business with User-Hostile Platforms
I rationally agree with the decision your team has made, but I realized I no longer have any AIR apps running on any of my systems. They've been unconsciously filtered out for native or web alternatives.

If your team does decide to build for a platform/OS I hope it's OS X first :D. Best of luck either way!

messel··on Entrepreneurship is not === to Management
I had to edit the submission as the !== got scrubbed to ==. Couple of minor gripes with Eric Ries' year end post. I'm cautious of good ideas becoming a religion.
messel··on Should you take a pay cut to work at a startup?
Agreed, there's a serious risk vs reward problem of founders vs first employees. I see founding as an exciting option, equity, control, low/no pay before revenue or funding.

First employees face a different risk, starting with a competitive but subpar salary with very small equity and little stability (get fired and your vested equity goes away), and they work long hours like founders.

If you found, you have to find a way to make it worth the risk to early employees. Many founders go the route of hiring first employees out of school where their options are slimmer.

messel··on Life's Default Rituals or Jeez my workdays are boring
Beware falling into grooves which become too predictable. The probability of building something awesome decreases with default days.
messel··on Ma.gnolia shut down two months too soon (old delicious competitor)
Expressions of emotions without context are frowned upon by the HN community. A grey metallic voice of iron reason backed by intricate developer knowledge is the idyllic comment. This is done to reduce comment noise, but it is inhuman. I too thought this comment was enjoyable, but I cannot express this sentiment beyond an upvote without risking the wrath of communal punishment.
messel··on What if we tested laws before passing them?
Sharp response G_wen. Appreciate the way you overcame the random sample issue with distributed geo-sampling.
messel··on What if we tested laws before passing them?
Why stop at new laws? Existing laws should be relentlessly reviewed for relevance.

One issue I see with random sample law experimentation is blindness to effects which only crop up when everyone is subject to a law. Take for example gun control. If a small sample of folks aren't allowed to have guns there may be little negative fall out. But taken to the extreme if gun ownership is illegal than by definition only law breakers would have guns making the random burglary or home invasion far less dangerous for criminals and far more dangerous for law abiding citizens.

messel··on InstapaperFeed: A Great Way to Pull Good Reading Out of Twitter
I've used the tool and enjoyed all the links it's cached in my instapaper account. If you're a heavy instapaper user like myself, its better to make a separate instapaper account to feed from your twitter inbound or send it to a specific folder.
messel··on Salesforce Buys Heroku (YC W08) For $212 Million In Cash
I think we all accept that another outcome can happen.

But the likelihood of independent growth for a platform of any type is incredibly low. For each Google how many Herokus and Friendfeeds are there?

The driving force behind very few independent companies is a lack of an IPO market. Without a payoff for VCs you have to grow organically through customer funding or sell to a big acquirer, or in rare cases pay off investors with debt.

messel··on Drew Houston's (Dropbox) YC Application
But with that 1 million acquirers will want the team/product for X years to ensure they get something of value (the product creation ability / pitching skill of the founders).
messel··on Zero to a Million Users in 15 Days
That's where the real story is.

A small startup decided it couldn't scale what the users were offered in an earlier version so the natural decision was to pull the plug.

messel··on I don't miss cable tv
Tech melodrama is something I can tune in or out, and it doesn't have the same emotional damage. It's more like eating too much popcorn for your brain.

The issue with cable tv and news is that many still rely on it to keep up to date on current events. The portrayal of current events is sinister.

messel··on Dreamy First Night with MacBook Air
Admission: this is my first laptop ever.

In early comparisons this 2.13Ghz, 4Gbyte ram paper weight is an adequate replacement for my monster dual core 3Ghz, 4Gbyte ram Dell desktop running Ubuntu (appropriately named Juggernaut).

I don't do heavy animations with Adobe. My standard fair is light gaming and web scripting front/back end. I'd like to push 3D JavaScript graphics with HTML5 but don't yet have a need.

messel··on 0.30000000000000004
No doubt, for years I've called quantization errors round off errors. But there's no rounding, it's an approximation error.
messel··on Are You A Pirate?
Posts from the heart are a potent brew, and that one certainly came from somewhere deep inside of Mr. Arrington. Mike can say that it's not about winning or losing, it's about playing the game now that he's "won".

This is the type of thing that makes mathematicians flying tackle computer scientists.

messel··on Offer HN: Help with Ruby on Rails
I'm interested. I'll need to slice it down for 100hours of a prototype. Let's take it to email, hit me up at messel at gmail dot com.

messel··on Offer HN: Help with Ruby on Rails
Ok I've got a request that you can bang out in less than a couple of hours. Can you design and task me with a problem that you'd like to see a web app for that can be done in 100 hours or so and would highlight Rails 3.0 features. I'll keep the code on github (victusfate there) and push the live version of whatever it is to heroku.

Basically I'm asking for a homework assignment that would help ramp up my rails skills and maybe be of use to the community. I worked on and helped complete a rails project between Oct '09 and March '10 but I ended up preferring Sinatra/Datamapper for light web apps. Now I'm looking to get back into Rails 3.0.

messel··on Show HN: I asked an HN member for feedback and she blew my mind

messel··on Tired of Ads and Shitty Content? Click Everything
Now that's hacker thinking, not bad mind you but not the right message.

It has to represent a determined social push, the hacker answer could be abused while representing only a small percentage of web browsers.

messel··on Tired of Ads and Shitty Content? Click Everything
It wasn't all bad. I just woke up on the wrong side of the bed when I read it at 4am. Ignoring gov isn't an optimal solution for growing businesses. It's wishful thinking that wide scale social changes can happen outside of regulated areas.
