meric··on Ask HN: How do you pay your remote workers located in various countries?
Moneygram?
meric··on Ask HN: 6-figure freelancers of HN, what do you do?
Startups might be willing to take this risk - if the new technology shortens the time to launch, then all the better. If it finds itself locked in 5 years down the line, who cares, it's 5 years later and they're a 100 million dollar company.
meric··on Target is plotting a big move away from AWS as Amazon takes over retail
Amazon could also cut service to Target and it could take months for Target to react properly through the courts.

Yes. I think if we think of ourselves as Django developers while building a business it's possible we will fall into the same pattern as exhibited in the article. That's how I see it's helpful to me as a developer who works with Django - it's a warning not to identify myself with the tools I have.
meric··on The life and death of a startup
Django have an "engineering is important" philosophy so developers attracted to Django have a similar mindset. In this case they're showing how despite superior engineering and a proven market is insufficient on its own - the start up required more effort in marketing, sales, financing.

This is a good article, well worth the read.
meric··on Maybe today’s Navy is just not very good at driving ships
I suppose it's like cows that evolve ever larger horns to compete for mates, then one day a new predator comes in and kills all the cows because their horns are too heavy and they can't run fast enough.
meric··on Rumours swell over new kind of gravitational-wave sighting
1. We give capital letters to the Big Bang, certainly we can have capital letters to the word to describe the cause of the universe, God?

2. God is not part of this universe.

3. God, having been the cause of this universe, can be described as all powerful - at least in the same way Big Bang was powerful.

4. God is outside of time.

The above requires no faith at all - to me it's obvious God described in points 1-4 is true.

Now the following requires a degree of faith:

5. God is one, indivisible, at least in the same way a quantum (by definition) is indivisible.

6. God, rather than having zero consciousness, is completely conscious, having equal or more consciousness than all the consciousness in this universe.

If God is all powerful by definition of having caused the universe then I find it harder to believe the specific claim that God in fact, is not conscious, even less than a starfish. And when we are talking about God, it's more likely to be all or nothing, so my specific claim is that God is completely conscious, and being outside of time, all-knowing.

meric··on Maybe We All Need a Little Less Balance
Sleeping is great, especially in cold early weekend mornings, but I'd loathe to have it as my main focus. I'd like to "balance" it with other activities.
meric··on Most men in the US and Europe could be infertile by 2060
Sperm count is correlated with testosterone levels, and testosterone levels have also been dropping.

But some believe it's God who does this.
meric··on 'Environmental Nightmare' After Thousands of Atlantic Salmon Escape Fish Farm
And where the population is growing they are mostly vegetarian anyway. Eat meat once or twice a month or less.
meric··on 'Environmental Nightmare' After Thousands of Atlantic Salmon Escape Fish Farm
We could farm the fish we eat or we could eat all the wild fish...
meric··on Ask HN: Why are compensation tiers secret?
I think government and military have standardised pay grades.
meric··on Ask HN: Part-time Developers
You have a team of 4, 2 of them work Monday, Tuesdays, 2 of them work Thursdays, Fridays. How to manage?

meric··on Bing/yahoo/duckduckgo are gaining on Google?
The intolerant aren't enemies to be destroyed; they are the land to be conquered; it's the ideas that must be destroyed.

The beginning of every hateful ideology begins by seeing itself as the oppressed and removing its tolerance for perceived oppressors, from nazism, to communism, and others I shall not name.

Binaries are built for specific operating systems. E.g. A Linux binary can't run on Mac OS X, except with a VM or... a container. :)
meric··on Ask HN: Looking for a tool
It's theoretically possible in JavaScript I think - you can trace the usage of the function return through variable assignment statements, insertions into arrays, etc. Not easy but not impossible?
meric··on Ask HN: Is long-term use of an unpopular programming language bad?
You could go work at Jane Street, I think they use Ocaml. https://blogs.janestreet.com/category/ocaml/
meric··on Ask HN: Is long-term use of an unpopular programming language bad?
I was extremely worried when I started reading your comment - I've been working on python since I got out of university. Reading the rest of the comment gave me relief - I also used Javascript, PostgreSQL, MySQL, CSS, Sass, Less, React, Angular, bash, Lua, C, GLSL. Phew.
meric··on Why We Terminated Daily Stormer
The comment I replied to mentioned: "let's say a German business owner in the 1930s".
meric··on Why We Terminated Daily Stormer
I dispute your point - not everyone could have chosen to stop being nazis and live.

"Approximately 77,000 German citizens were killed for one or another form of resistance by Special Courts, courts-martial, People's Court and the civil justice system. "

"Almost every community in Germany had members taken away to concentration camps. As early as 1935 there were jingles warning: "Dear Lord God, keep me quiet, so that I don't end up in Dachau." (It almost rhymes in German: Lieber Herr Gott mach mich stumm / Daß ich nicht nach Dachau komm.)[17] "Dachau" refers to the Dachau concentration camp"

meric··on Why We Terminated Daily Stormer
In 2017 we have prisons and we don't starve anyone in there.
meric··on Why We Terminated Daily Stormer
The bottom line is: Am I going to let a man starve himself to death while I have a shop full of food? No.
meric··on Why We Terminated Daily Stormer
> It seems to me that such a business owner would seem in hindsight to have been acting virtuously,

No it wouldn't - There is a large percentage of population joining Nazi parties for convenience, for their career or even out of fear. Are you going to deny them the food you sell from your shop? If they are Nazi's, are they still not human beings deserving to access food in the market?

Does someone being a member of the Nazi party mean we can let them starve to death? Shoot them and push them into a trench even?

The moment you dehumanise vast swathes of the population, you've already lost and dropped to the level of "Nazi's". It's not wise to let your enemies turn you into them.

meric··on Ask HN: What mistakes in your experience does management keep making?
I think I'm 10x in some tasks and 0.1x in others, not sure about everyone else...
meric··on Ask HN: What is your side hustle? How much money does it make you?
Yes, if the purpose is to make money as opposed to learning or for fun, I agree it's better to ride the trend. :)

Economically? I think this or last year.

meric··on Ask HN: What is your side hustle? How much money does it make you?
I'd suggest getting an account and put in $500 you can afford to lose and start by googling for stock chart price and volume patterns and explanations and understand the idea behind them and evaluate whether the current crypto price and volume patterns match or not. And if so, what is your best guess for the next move? Have a read at Mr. Livermore's texts they are immensely useful.
