meric··on Tell HN: New Google finance sucks
Yahoo finance improved IMO.

I can’t use google finance, some stocks I’m interested in have a share price is < 1 cent, but google finance charts have a minimum increment of 1 cent.

meric··on US utilities have finally realized electric cars may save them
It's a reasonable idea if car batteries become easily swappable.
meric··on YouTube will add information from Wikipedia to videos about conspiracies
Soy products.
meric··on Ask HN: What brings you joy, without a relationship?
Continue your journey and walk the path of becoming the best person you can be. The further you're on it, the more people want to join you for a ride. It's not uncommon for men to start a family at 45, you have time; Face your emotions and wants head on & keep going!
meric··on Studying how the brain relinquishes childhood memories
I remember waking up in a cot and shaking the bells on my legs deliberately to get my mother’s attention. I had a picture in my mind of my mum responding to the shaking of my leg, I shook my leg and my mother responded in the exact way I thought she would.

I remember the first day I was at kindergarten, I remember distinctly talking with my classmates about our ages. I remember answering I was 2. (2 years 9 months)

meric··on Mother-daughter team joins YC to accelerate their drug discovery platform
Family businesses are pretty common. I think they can work as long as family ties are prioritised over the business.
meric··on Xray – An experimental next-generation Electron-based text editor
Sublime Text 3 is a commercial text editor. Atom is free; but I don't want to pay for Sublime Text 3, I had already paid for 2, and I don't like not using the latest...
meric··on Ask HN: What are the issues you think that a 'World Government' would solve?
I note in World War I the German, Russian and British monarchs were all cousins. I probably put a world government as the close to the next world war; win-win deals have all been exhausted and only win-lose deals remain, made by people, on a world government level, who have huge influence.
meric··on U.S. Has Been Watching Russia's Nuclear-Powered Cruise Missiles Crash and Burn
I agree with all your points and it makes the US obsession with Russian influence ridiculous IMO.
meric··on When Did Americans Stop Marrying Cousins? Ask the World’s Largest Family Tree
Why is it horrible? Their work was valuable at the time. It’s only horrible if we choose to not see the value they provided; IMO It’s not any more or less horrible than the husbands whose largest time sink was deep in the coal mines or on the streets sweeping horse manure. I don’t know about you, I’d be annoyed at someone feeling bad for me having to do my work. I’m grateful for our ancestors putting whatever effort necessary to keep society going.
meric··on Ask HN: Junior software developer wanting to go next level
That’s great you’ve had 3 years. Do you think you are writing good code? Or you still want to learn a bit more on the job? If you feel you are ready, 3 years is more than enough to start applying for non-junior roles. Good luck.
meric··on Why I Cloned My Dog
If It was human - you’d propagate their genes by having children with them. I guess she did the next best thing with her dog.
meric··on Governments have overestimated the economic returns of higher education
There’s white people in Asia, peach people in Asia, light brown people, dark people, black people in Asia.

But then you wouldn’t call a black Asian a black person, he’d just be South Asian.

Therefore since your use of colours is tied to the location of the person’s ancestors, Asia referring to the continent, oughtn’t it be capitalised?

meric··on Ask HN: I exercised my options on leaving a company – now told they're 'void'
The company ran out of latest round of funds without increasing its value, and took them best deal it can. In the years since it had diluted around that much, again.

This is a public company, not a tech startup.

meric··on Ask HN: I exercised my options on leaving a company – now told they're 'void'
I’ve had my shares diluted from $2000 to $50 a long time ago, but if it’s “void” after a dilution then I’d like to have the math explained to me...
meric··on What Happens to Us Does Not Happen to Most of You
How does putting the lede at the top leave you nowhere to go...?
meric··on Language Learning for the Dispassionate
Awesome work! I am learning a language and have been fantasising about a tool like this.

What about support of non-latin alphabet languages? I'm learning Dari at the moment. It uses Arabic alphabets, the words are a string of alphabets, there is tenses, verbs, nouns, adjectives. It's different to English only by the alphabet used, the vocabulary and the ordering of the verbs/nouns/subject.

Is it possible for it to be opened up to third parties to contribute new languages?

meric··on Ask HN: Small footprint vs. ambition
Don't let yourself confined by what's "supposed to be". Trust your emotional state derive from what's good or bad from first principles (i.e. from experience).

That said - it's good to do an exercise and imagine it's 10 years later, you've created a company startup for the sole purpose of making one billion dollars, think about what you can do with the one billion dollars, what opportunities you've sacrificed, what you've risked.

How do you feel about it? Was it worth it? Would you do it again?

The answer might be different for everyone.

You can repeat for any other number of ambitious goals - getting married to a very good person; spending two decades raising children; moving to a new country; or even getting divorced; travelling around the world; becoming the best at an activity; become world famous for something, etc.

For any one goal - think, what kind of person tend to achieve that goal easily, then the price of achieving that goal is to become that kind of person. Do you still want to achieve goal? If I didn't want to become the kind of person who'd marry my partner, it means to me I didn't actually want to marry her to begin with. Personally, to achieve X, is equivalent to, to become the person who achieves X easily.

It helps me re-focus on what actions to take.

meric··on Wounds taking weeks to heal on skin disappear in a week inside the mouth (2013)
Are dry wounds are less likely to be infected than wet wounds? A wet wound that gets infected can take more time to heal than dry wounds that doesn't?
meric··on 10,000 year clock gets lowered into Texan mountain
The human condition is as good as it can be at this point in time - To try to change it, damages it. E.g. A child feels loved when they're accepted as they are, rather than pushing onto it things the parents wished they had done or ideals the parents wished they lived by.

Sometimes, to yield to the current gives strength.

meric··on Our microbiome challenges our concept of self
I remember the time before I could walk or talk but can listen and communicate with body language... just FYI.
meric··on Ask HN: I'm not a good programmer, but I keep acing interviews
“Know how to do it better? Congratulations, you will be permanently dissatisfied.”

Try to be empathetic when you give advice. Take into account the company’s circumstances when the code was written. E.g. The code might be utterly horrible but was written by a non-programmer who studied 3 months of javascript at community college, but gets the job done, in that case, rather than be dissatisfied, see if you can convince yourself to be impressed instead. Keep in mind people are trying their best; otherwise you would not have joined them!

Instead of thinking about it as office politics - think of initiating yourself to be a member of a tribe, is it only a matter of how many deers you kill and how much grain you harvest, or are there other important qualities of a tribe member? There will always be a time to show off your abilities or improve the state of affairs but sometimes the time is “not now”.

In our minds we think we are rational but in our hearts we are and always will be a part of nature.

meric··on Ask HN: Is it possible that I can land a job as a Junior Web Designer?

It's OK to kill an animal and feel bad for it at the same time.
meric··on Can We Copy the Brain?
I wouldn't get into a deep coma to find out either!
meric··on Can We Copy the Brain?
I wonder if person died, and his clone waking up can be compared to a person getting into a deep coma from an accident and waking up a year later. In both cases a consciousness disintegrated and a consciousness was integrated?
meric··on Ask HN: What would you advise 18 year old who is starting a business in India?
Sell things for more than you buy them. Do it until it's big enough to get you into trouble for not having the appropriate licenses, brand registrations, business entities, (those are distractions and don't make money).
meric··on The Struggling Artist at 86
It is natural for one’s intuition to be in the middle of one’s perception of two extremes. :)
meric··on Coinbase Insolvent?
They would get into trouble if they tried to play market maker.
