meow_mix··on Safe ways to do things in bash
Nobody doubts that pipes and languages like awk are great for one liners, but I think that's a little besides the point of this post, which is advocating for things like the use of bash arrays:

``` array=( a b ) array+=(c) if [ ${#array[@]} -gt 0 ]; then rm -- "${array[@]}" fi ```
``` array = [a, b] array << c array.map { |i| `rm #{i}` } if array.length > 0 ```

There's also nobody stopping you from using text processing tools like awk and sed, or bash one liners in ruby/python either, but I think we should leave the logic and arrays for scripting languages, no?

meow_mix··on Safe ways to do things in bash
Why ever resort to shell scripts when we have languages like ruby / python for anything more complex than installs?

Clarity is king people

meow_mix··on Facebook is launching a dating feature
look up matches on fb? dude that's creepy
meow_mix··on Things I Wish I'd Known About Bash
It's 2018 and we're still talking about writing non-trivial bash scripts?
meow_mix··on Bitcoin Will Probably Never Be Embraced by the U.S. Government
I need to block Forbes. The number of ads they put up is comparable, and quality of their content is comparable to buzzfeed nowadays
meow_mix··on A Cookbook for Machine Learning: Vol 1
Idk about you guys but this is not what I think of when I hear the word "cookboook"
meow_mix··on Show HN: Simple Deep Learning Tutorials using Microsoft Cognitive Toolkit
What the world really needs right now is another deep learning tutorial
meow_mix··on Dear Amazon, We Picked Your New Headquarters for You
Happy to see Columbus on the list, shame our tech growth isn't quite at the other state's levels right now (although I think it will be in the future!)
meow_mix··on Target is plotting a big move away from AWS as Amazon takes over retail
Amazon is a company that cares about credibility above all else, plus word travels fast in software engineering circles. Seems unlikely they would risk snooping
meow_mix··on Build a Serverless Web Applicaion
I'm a little confused as to what the point of cognito is. Wouldn't users typically be managed by the application and data regarding the users typically be stored in the db? Why do we need another service for this?
meow_mix··on WSJ Ends Google Users' Free Ride, Then Fades in Search Results
This "discrimination" is by design, they should quit crying
meow_mix··on Kill Google AMP before it kills the web
I'm honestly just too scared that Google would gain an even larger foothold in the web to consider implementing AMP on any sites, but the UX argument is valid as well
meow_mix··on Google I/O 2017
Great stuff for google home but I thought they already had almost all of this
meow_mix··on Switching to Sublime Text from Vim in 2017
> Ignoring the node modules directory

This is one of the most annoying things about being in a node js project, whether you're just grepping or searching for a specific file it's a real pain point if you've forgotten to ignore it

meow_mix··on Jeff Bezos’ Annual Letter
Depends on how ML is used. ML is much more than gaging customer satisfaction
meow_mix··on How I Learned to Take the SAT Like a Rich Kid
You're missing the point --the issue isn't just that you're supposed to study, you need to know what to study and when to study it. The kids in the article are studying very hard for preparatory SAT, which apparently gives them a valuable distinction (national merit scholar). Many high schoolers chose to sit this exam out, and weren't aware it was even important to study for it (myself included).

The article describes a studying process that is nearly athletic for an exam that isn't stressed as important to high schoolers in lower income areas, this is a huge information gap between social classes that needs corrected.

meow_mix··on Web Development in Go
How good are the ORMs options in Go? One of the reasons Rails is my go-to for web development is how easy Active Record it makes configuration and changing databases.
meow_mix··on Many famous scientists have something in common: they didn’t work long hours
If you pick cotton for 80/hr a week I promise you won't be picking cotton in the long run as long as the guy only doing it 20 hr/week (you will develop physical problems very quickly)
meow_mix··on Many famous scientists have something in common: they didn’t work long hours
Musk might run a successful company but that's not really a science
meow_mix··on Statistician Proves Gaussian Correlation Inequality
I love stories like this one. Reminds me of the the twin prime story from a little while ago. Well written article as well!
meow_mix··on Hackers Stole My Website
Crazy experience --very surprised the FBI was as helpful as you described. I definitely wouldn't have considered that move but I'm glad the author mentions it.
meow_mix··on Deep Learning enables hearing aid wearers to pick out a voice in a crowded room
Really happy to have this guy as our neural nets professor at ohio state :)
meow_mix··on Abacus use can boost math skills
Maria Montessori had a lot to say on the importance incorporating tactile elements in early education. This is why Montessori schools generally incorporate tools like the abacus (at least mine did). Not surprised we're re-learning some of her findings today
meow_mix··on Neural Net Side Project Makes $3500/mo Trading Stocks
"Proprietary" technical details? He doesn't even cite the kind of network he's using. This is an ad for him as a freelancer (I doubt the ad revenue hurts him either).
meow_mix··on Outrageously Large Neural Networks: The Sparsely-Gated Mixture-Of-Experts Layer
More parameters is very exciting! I wonder if anyone here has read about what the relationship between the number of parameters on the network and the size of the dataset used on the network? Wouldn't such a large number of parameters risk serious overfitting by giving the model the capacity to fit to exact samples?
meow_mix··on Ruby terminal apps toolkit
Ruby is a fantastic language for writing command line tools. String interpolation and regex are great on it, easy to use OO principles as well as functional principals, etc. Definitely going to be writing wrappers over some of my favorite unix commands with this!
meow_mix··on Ask HN: Is there really a market for deep learning skills without a Ph.D?
Thanks for so many positive responses everyone! Seems like the outlook on this question is brighter than I had anticipated.
meow_mix··on Top Developer Tools of 2016
Not sure how this was judged... Seems silly to list jQuery, React, and Javascript... If jQuery, React etc is on there obviously JS is too? They should really break down the numbers.

And what is meant by trending? I assumed this was judged by people hiring for the technology but they list Node as being a top-trend yet on their website Rails has more job openings than Node... Seems weird.

meow_mix··on Google Cloud is 50% cheaper than AWS
This is good news for GCS but they will need to compete on more than price if they want to gain market share.

Saving 500$ / month is minuscule compared to the time it will cost engineers to migrate from AWS to GCS and get used to the new service.

meow_mix··on Nvidia on new self-driving system: “basically 5 years ahead and coming in 2017”
This article seems to relate mostly to the computer vision problems associated with self-driving systems, but what about weather conditions? Is this a solved problem?
