menmob··on Minecraft content creator Technoblade has died
Etika? Still miss him myself.
menmob··on Newegg has a bit of a scandal on its hands
And it’s bound to happen. The issue here is that Newegg is not careful, as well as not trying to help the customer once they sell them something broken. Amazon makes up for it by basically blindly trusting the customer.

menmob··on Do you ever avoid submitting something on HN so devs won't ruin it?
If you do legitimately have a workaround for this, I can put you in touch with those grabbing metadata for the return dislike extension. They’d love to see it. (If it’s the averageRating endpoint, then they’re aware, and it’s likely going to be removed anyway.)
menmob··on Do you ever avoid submitting something on HN so devs won't ruin it?
This is changing. YT has become more aware of archivists saving removed content in the past, and much more quickly lock things down nowadays. Pre-2017 unlisted videos were gone within days, and the community tab cut off within hours. Gone are the days of “removed” features sticking around in APIs for months. :(
menmob··on My Favorite Software Subreddits
Can confirm, after acquiring a 42U rack and a costly power bill.
menmob··on Benchmarking the Apple M1 Max
But that’s system memory. Not GPU memory. M1 shares that memory, so it’s addressable by both directly, but with ryzen (and almost every other consumer platform) the cpu and gpu memory are separate.
menmob··on Belgian ISP under 250 Gbps DDoS for days on end
That’s.. not what a Distributed Denial of Service does. They come from thousands of IPs.
menmob··on Why Monero
This is why I hate the cryptocurrency “community”.
menmob··on Mēris botnet, climbing to the record
Legitimate IPs, at that. These are networks that are not hostile 99% of the time.
menmob··on Show HN: Arxiv.org on IPFS
Makes sense. I’ve just been looking at creating a distributed YT archive on IPFS, but as you said, load times are absolutely terrible, especially for big files like video. I’ve been following sia since 2016-ish, and skynet looks awesome, just worried about maturity. I will try hosting my own files as you described, thanks!
menmob··on Show HN: Arxiv.org on IPFS
Are you able to “pin” files yourself like IPFS? Or are you required to pay hosts to store it?
menmob··on Facebook shouldn't be allowed to buy Giphy, says UK regulator
My only real experience with giphy was when I was assisting ArchiveTeam in saving some gifs thaf giphy was going to delete. They wouldn’t give us a list of gifs that would be deleted, despite saying they wanted to help us. So we hit their API to get what GIFs were needed after they gave us a go-ahead (I don’t entirely remember how much permission was given here- it’s been a while.). After maybe an hour of hitting them fast enough to get the information we needed to save the gifs before they were deleted (which really wasn’t that many IIRC. Maybe 50/sec?), the whole site went down.

Later that evening, the CEO then threatened ArchiveTeam and got some bad press for suing some volunteers just trying to save some funny cat videos.

It didn’t ever amount to much, and I think they reversed the decision to remove them anyway.

Totally unrelated to the topic, but whenever someone mentions Giphy, this is all I can think about..

menmob··on Tell HN: Crypto Wallets Trust Wallet and Ledger appear to be compromised
Has to be someone close to him who knew about both. I seriously doubt someone compromised ledger’s security and only stole $40k.
menmob··on Intel Core I7-11700K Review: Blasting Off with Rocket Lake
For 5600X/5800X, availability is fine now. They’ve been in stock at amazon for a few days continuously. 5900X and 5950X on the other hand.. good luck.
menmob··on The Edge of Emulation
In no way will TASBot ever be automated. It can require hours (and sometimes dozens of hours) to get a single game to sync on real hardware, and that’s if a cycle-accurate emulator was used. If not, it’s near impossible to playback a TAS.

Not to mention only a very small subset of SNES TASes are done on cycle-accurate emulators.
