memossy··on Essential shutting down after failing to launch ‘GEM’ smartphone
We are making that at Symmitree(.com) but for the refugee / aid market.

Rugged, 4 day battery, repairable, stripped down OS/app store for << $100

Kinda been enjoying using the prototype as a daily driver over my iPhone

memossy··on Dark Mode by Default – 95% of People Prefer Dark over Light Mode
Left shift + left alt + PrtSc = dark mode for word and all sorts via high contrast mode on Windows
memossy··on Ask HN: Where can I work as a software engineer to combat large global problems?
We have several projects tackling large global problems launching shortly with interesting backing.

These include fighting poverty with intelligent smartphones, fighting commodity volatility and fighting online hate and extremism.

All have a AI + human angle and interesting backing.

Mail me on semantic at gmail.com if of interest

At www.symmitree.com we will be giving 1m refugees free, decent quality, biometric smartphones and access to key apps/dapps next year with a plan of making these phones free for anyone who wants them a few years after. We will be announcing full details of the mechanisms behind this in June.

memossy··on Ask HN: What did you work on in 2017?
In my work I identified roughly 16 major drivers of ASD, but most of them tend to manifest as a GABA/Glutmate imbalance or GABA dysfunction.

Lots of people have been cured depending on if their ASD was caused by biological dysfunction - for example I know one who had biontidinase dysfunction so biotin supplementation cured all symptoms.

Hopefully you’ve identified the driver of your ASD and it will help you achieve your goals!

I learned to deal with my personal Aspergers but despite the social issues it caused earlier in my life deeply value the weird thinking processes it has given me.

memossy··on Ask HN: What did you work on in 2017?
Went back to being an Emerging Markets hedge fund manager after taking 5 years off to research ASD

Created www.ananas.org.uk to map the worlds belief systems using AI and data science incentivised by tax deductible crypto (closed ecosystem Veblen good model supported by ERC-721 sponsorship of scripture)

Worked on finalising specs for www.symmitree.com to give every refugee access to free android smartphones and data in the next two years using functional distributed ledgers combined with biometrics and lots of great partners. Blockchain bonds too based on the IFFIm program, the legal side has been really interesting, as has delving into self sovereign ID with zero knowledge proofs.

Has been a great year, hopefully 2018 will be an even better one.

memossy··on I realized my brain belongs to my phone
One good compromise is to get a Sony Z5 Compact and enable Ultra Stamina mode. Switches off most smartphone features, keeps 20 Mp camera, gets you a week of battery life etc in a compact, waterproof case.

Very cheap second hand now.

A lot of money for what's basically Pied Piper without middle-out.

Seriously though these coins won't be worth much given a competitor could either a) dominate mining or b) fork it.

memossy··on SEC Issues Report Concluding DAO Tokens, a Digital Asset, Were Securities
SEC clarifying some guidelines makes it easier to codify proper token sales like the upcoming filecoin one done by coinlist.

Scam tokens were never going to be the big driver of Ethereum success, official acknowledgement of it as a valid platform was.

This goes another step in that direction, particularly as it avoids clamping down on cryptocurrencies like Ethereum or Litecoin, which the IRS has deemed as property.

Initiatives like the Ethereum Enterprise Alliance are also contributing, so the more respectable it appears, the higher the price is likely to go due to higher expected future utility value.

memossy··on SEC Issues Report Concluding DAO Tokens, a Digital Asset, Were Securities
They defined profits broadly in the scope of the release. Secondary sales have different rules.
memossy··on SEC Issues Report Concluding DAO Tokens, a Digital Asset, Were Securities
The main reason they didn't come down hard on the DAO is because of the hard fork..
memossy··on SEC Issues Report Concluding DAO Tokens, a Digital Asset, Were Securities
As a hedge fund manager who just added a token to one of our projects (to help create a resource to combat extremism naturally), I wrote up my thoughts here:

https://medium.com/ananas-blog/sec-on-icos-securities-are-se...

A general rule of tokens is that if they promise a profit they are a scam and if they promise a share of profits a security.

The closer they are to API keys the better in terms of non-securitability.

It is likely that the token usage will gradually bifurcate between those that are "property" and scarce digital assets like Bitcoin (or rarepepes) and those that are API keys.

For our charitable project we've tried to incorporate elements of both to create an interesting token economy to build a useful resource.

Hopefully there will be more of these attempts, both registered as securities and that fall outside of this classification.

memossy··on Autism detectable in brain long before symptoms appear
It's due to CYP2D6 ultrarapid metabolisation.

The anticholinergic effects of benadryl have wider implications.

memossy··on Autism detectable in brain long before symptoms appear
You can see Dr Ben Ari's work on the flip here: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0306452214...

I was intrigued when my son had paradoxical reactions to GABA analogues so dug more into this (also has paradoxical reactions to benadryl, which is a different can of worms).

I think ASD, ADHD etc are all linked in terms of neurotransmitters and ion channel imbalance that causes overload on various pathways.

On interesting element on auditory processing is the similarities between ASD auditory sensitivity and hypokalemic sensory overload. Anecdotally I have seen dosing potassium reducing auditory sensitivity short term for possibly this reason.

memossy··on Autism detectable in brain long before symptoms appear
Clonazepam in 'standard' doses has a very different effect to clonazepam in microdose, ie 1/50th of the clinical dose.

You can see this discussed by Dr Catterral here https://epiphanyasd.blogspot.co.uk/2015/08/low-dose-clonazep... based on the research he did supported by the excellent Simon's foundation (hedge fund manager behind Renaissance)

Above a 50mcg dose, the inhibitory effects disappear.

A nice explanation of why this happens can be found here: http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2009/01/treating_insomnia_wit..., really interesting readable read

memossy··on Autism detectable in brain long before symptoms appear
I quit a high flying job to research ASD when my son was diagnosed years ago and have read every single paper and website I could find.

My broad conclusion from this is that ASD is a condition caused by lots of different factors with common symptoms.

This makes treatments tough as ASD caused by oxidative stress would respond badly to treatments that work great on ASD caused by reductive stress for example (eg ASD symptoms that seem to get 'better' when taking paracetamol vs ASD made worse by it).

Thus when treatments are tried across the population you get odd results if you're not sub-dividing the groups into likely etiology, I've tried to look for statistically significant sets taking this into account.

The key dysfunctional system in most ASD seems to be the balance between the excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters GABA and Glutamate.

The two broad groups for this appear to reflect 'classical' autism, ie same from birth vs 'regressive' ASD, for example secondary to mitochondrial dysfunction where there is a sudden loss of ability.

For the former, a common cause appears to be GABA dysfunction, which the blog epiphanyasd.blogspot.com does a great job pulling together the research on.

In this case GABA doesn't flip to inhibitory from excitatory at birth and this could show up in brain scans for this subset of children with ASD..

The treatment options are interesting in this regard, but the 'safest' trial to check this dysfunction I've found is micro-dosage clonazepam (40mcg), which is already prescribed to children with anxiety (at 500-1000mcg doses). At this subclinical dosage, it should have no impact unless there is a dysfunction, but if it does (which it has in several families I know), then the research into other drugs that could treat this dysfunction becomes far more interesting (eg current trials in France by Ben Ari and Lemmonier on bumetanide).

memossy··on Ask HN: POTUS Donald Trump; What this means to Silicon Valley
I don't think there will be significant negative drag to Silicon Valley as anti-immigrant policies won't apply to skilled migrants.

Ultimately Trump is a chauvinist and economic with the truth sure, but that just makes him a New York businessman. He is no ideologue and as long as he doesn't kick off a trade war things should level out quite quickly as I note here:

https://governmentsandmarkets.com/trump-the-morning-after-th...

We can also actually expect more support for startups as these are acknowledged job creators. Where the danger comes is in enforcement of anti-monopoly statutes for larger companies, although healthcare monopolies are likely first on the plate.

memossy··on Sam Altman: “YC not going to fire someone over support of a candidate”
One could argue the success of most companies in SV are based in part on indifference.

Disruption creates many losers as well as winners, not everything is a positive sum game.

Indifference towards second order impacts due to a focus on the primary goal (economy is really really bad about to explode etc) is pretty common.

I think Thiel does acknowledge some of the ugliness though looking at his speech, he's just focused on the necessity for immediate change versus status quo/gradual shifts & calls for him to be disavowed for doing so still don't ring quite true.

memossy··on Sam Altman: “YC not going to fire someone over support of a candidate”
Something missing in the hundreds (thousands?) of comments on this is why Thiel supports Trump.

The bottom line is that Thiel believes the 'positives' of a Trump presidency would outweigh the negatives.

The expected value is positive versus a status quo Clinton administration so he should support Trump.

He lays his priority set out quite clearly in his RNC speech: http://time.com/4417679/republican-convention-peter-thiel-tr... and if you agree with his central premises of a structurally broken economy, excessive foreign intervention etc then tbh Trump is the only viable candidate even after recent headlines, particularly if you believe in the strength of US institutions to curb any excesses.

If Thiel's position were based on hatred then I think it would be another story, but as it is, again given acceptance of the possibility of his central premises being correct and Trump being a 'viable' (as in could win vs Stein or Johnson) major party candidate his support is rational.

Across America Trump will win fifty million votes or more and while some of them may be deplorables voting for deplorable reasons, many will be voting based on implicit expected value metrics.

memossy··on Hard Tech Startups
Out of curiosity do the "hard software" startups at YC (a startup is whether there is doubt that the software can be built at all) share more DNA/commonalities with the "hard tech" startups or their fellow software startups?
memossy··on Research points to Google auto-complete favoring Clinton
Ordinarily wouldn't link to an article like this on Sputnik but the author and the academic work he does is solid (he also indicates he is a Hillary supporter). I noticed some of the trends myself when looking at trends.google.com last month, didn't realise could be policy.

Of particular interest are his experiments on the impact of curated content on decision making, something of increasing importance in our algorithmic lives given who controls the algorithms.

memossy··on Ask HN: How did you learn about stocks and the market?
I became a global multi-strategy hedge fund manager at 23 ($1bn fund) via a series of odd events so didn't have time to go through the classic CFA analyst => fund manager process.

I get asked this question a lot and usually recommend http://www.realvisiontv.com these days, particularly if you like videos.

Some variable quality, but some really excellent, unique viewpoints from value investors and macro managers there.

I would also recommend the Market Wizards series by Schwager and Inside the House of Money/the Invisible Hands by the Drobnys.

memossy··on The Tech Bust of 2015
This is a very good piece, particularly: "In a world of 0 percent interest rates, people become pretty focused on finding new sources for fixed income"

The amount of money coming to pay up for growth/quasi fixed-income is almost certain to increase as there are a lot of investors who need to hit 7-8% nominal returns in a 0% rate world: http://www.ecstrat.com/research/why-large-funds-are-piling-i...

memossy··on Bill Gurley: startups seeking funding are starting to lower their expectations
Yes, the returns are set due to actuarial liabilities to repay the pensioners. Only other option is to hugely increase premiums for current workers & most of these funds are already hugely underfunded.

As they follow Swensen's endowment approach risk theoretically diminishes as they "diversify".

memossy··on Bill Gurley: startups seeking funding are starting to lower their expectations
Low interest rates are forcing asset allocators who have high (7-8%) nominal return targets into PE/VC

I go over the logic of this here, many seem to miss it: https://medium.com/@emad/asset-allocation-not-share-prices-w...

(my background: hedge fund manager/strategist with clients like those mentioned in article)

memossy··on AngelList Announces $400M Early-Stage Fund
> What leads you to believe the syndicate leads are doing real due diligence?

Never said real due diligence, just most of the due diligence that is actually done

However, if one is investing in 1,000 startups then due diligence is actually of less importance as you approximate a normal distribution of returns..
