They do this kind of publicity stunt all the time. Simulating a model of biological neural network doesn't mean much. We don't know how the brain works yet.
This article is misleadingly written...I am a scientist, and I disagree with the author's liberal use of language. Especially regarding the "low-probability events"...
And yet, I have high hopes in science. It is not the most efficient system, but it is the only system that is consistently working well to advance our knowledge.

Using calculus to predict the future is a special case of statistics where your uncertainty is zero. Statistics is absolutely necessary to do any science or prediction. It provides how confident you are with your prediction, and there's nothing special about having uncertainty in your beliefs (yes I am a Bayesian).
