Hey! Greetings from the UK. I'm senior Python developer available for contract work. Looking for reliable Elixir dev? That's me too!

Viewpoints are my own and not the viewpoints of my employer (that's also me).

melx··on Show HN: CodeZen – A simple CLI tool to ask LLM questions about your codebase
> ...sends it to GPT with the entire codebase as context.

I never (so far) used LLM for "code assistance". However I would not want to use a route of sending everything in to OpenAI (or similar).

Maybe offer some sort of `.*ignore` that includes files to be excluded in the (API) request.

melx··on Self-hosting an AI (LLM) chatbot without going broke
Very informative - thanks for the write up!
melx··on Ask HN: How do you make money on the side?
Here you can find some historical figures https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&qu...
melx··on A better tool than jq for just extracting data, antonmedv's fx
Apples vs oranges.

`jq` is a CLI processor for JSON (you can filter values etc), while `fx` is a JSON viewer (with some `reducers` functionality).

melx··on Why SQLite is so great for the edge
Well, the post "about the edge" also links to some announcement post there they "tried" to talk about the edge in more edgy details. Yet, it's like paragraph 67 on that 3rd post they were mention something about "the edge".
melx··on Dynamic Forms with LiveView Streams
I read somewhere that it's good to learn new prog language every some time but there's not enough time in one's life (especially after having kid(s)). So I used Elixir (Phoenix/Ecto) on a new project some 18months ago and every project I start now is using that tech stack!

The best thing for someone like me (back-end dev) is no need to write JavaScript, care about zillions of build systems, having the Node/npm drama yet I can create nice and "progressive" web apps. In fact one of the projects I'm building is a powerful online forms builder.

melx··on Setris – Tetris with Sand Physics
Well.. it's a game!
melx··on Software bugs that cause real-world harm
Care to share what happened in 17th century in Sweden?
melx··on Kanboard: free and open source Kanban project management software
Well, my case is that I like this app's UI (not interested in self hosted RSS), so I wanted to create similarly aesthetic website for my own use, but could not find "the picture" I had in my mind.
melx··on BMW releases all-electric 5-series
No automatic blinkers either.
melx··on Kanboard: free and open source Kanban project management software
Unrelated, but I was looking a very long time to re-discover this app (someone else posted it here some time ago). It was impossible to search for, and I haven't bookmarked it. And now I have it. Thank you!
melx··on Kanboard: free and open source Kanban project management software
Yes, if I really want the software I will build a Docker image, but still I would prefer not to deal how to config/run Parcel/Webpack/Babel/Esbuild/Grunt/Whatever.
melx··on Kanboard: free and open source Kanban project management software
Maybe it's my age (after certain number one becomes super lazy..), but self host anything that requires me to install something is too much of an ask. Provide a binary that I can drop on my /remote/ machine and I may consider using it.
melx··on Show HN: Sortabase, a collaborative, visual database builder for communities
Yes, but English wasn't our first language back then (in ~2005).
melx··on Why KDE Plasma was chosen as the default desktop environment for Asahi Linux
I'm giving a KDE a go as I finally convinced the wifey (non-technical human) to use "the Linux" daily. I haven't used KDE myself for past decade so should be fun.
melx··on Show HN: Sortabase, a collaborative, visual database builder for communities
My mate used to say "git" to say something is fine/good (to him).
melx··on Show HN: Sortabase, a collaborative, visual database builder for communities
I would put everything in JSON(b) column since you're using Postgres anyway....
melx··on Tell HN: Putting mirrors around my desk improved my posture
I guess you mean road cycling.

I would advise to get bike fitting service, it's not that expensive and will save you a lot in long term.

melx··on How to sell Elixir again
Django ORM is nice but too simple for some advanced examples. Tried to solve some Postgres CTE in Django? Good luck.
melx··on Tesla cancels all right-hand drive Model S, Model X orders
No, if steering wheel is on the left then it's N/S (at least in the UK), otherwise O/S.

LHD or RHD can be confusing. Is it RHD if your car is Spanish car (is it LHD?) being driven in UK...?

melx··on Incident with Issues and Pull Requests
Thanks, I discovered "git instaweb" which is based on gitweb. It's nice and offers mostly what I'm after, but the 100% layout width is terrible (no opt to configure it).
melx··on Incident with Issues and Pull Requests
You right! I remember I stopped Go programming when they added this "feature". (I mostly left due to syntax "overflow" tho).
melx··on Commuter Cars Tango
A car's a car and that's that (doesn't rhyme though).
melx··on Incident with Issues and Pull Requests
Thanks! Gitolite doesn't offer any UI for what I see. Also to set it up is too complicated.

I just found about "git instaweb" (developed by Git authors, but it's extra OS package) - it works locally, probably what I was looking for (minus the 100% width page layout).

BTW There's Gitblit is someone's fancy hosting Java app.

melx··on Wind is main source of UK electricity for first time
"...we often have a few weeks with low wind..."

Plenty of wind up North + Scotland - just no means to transport it over where the most demand is (the South).

melx··on Incident with Issues and Pull Requests
Gitea requires a database which is unwanted feature for "git server" in my little world.

I'm just looking for "website" (read: interface) that list files over HTTPS, with the ability to show nice looking diffs. Some sort of ssh keys(?) to prevent unauthorized access etc.

melx··on Incident with Issues and Pull Requests
I'm going to self-host my git repos. Any recommendations?

The git+nginx would suffice but it does not offer GUI. I need one to see the changes proposed (aka PRs).

Gitea is nice, but a bit overkill for my needs. I don't need CI, files hosting, issues, team members, releases, wiki, forking/watching/staring, etc.

melx··on Incident with Issues and Pull Requests
Shout out to all devs that put the deps of their programs on GH...

Right now I can ignore that my PRs show 500 error, or old code best case scenario.

But... I cannot build and ship due to project's dependency depending on some stuff hosted on GH.

melx··on Ask HN: What productivity tools do you use?
Time blocking method.

My wife used it and I could see first-hand how productive she became very quickly.

Using pen and paper I plan a whole week ahead with this method.

I could not find a simple/nice template for time slots for the week so I made wee app[0] to make me some.

melx··on Marginalia: DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content
No, it's really means "404 nothing found" for your search query. I searched for my company name and got nothing as well. A bit surprising since it says "search the Internet" ;-)
