Hey! Greetings from the UK. I'm senior Python developer available for contract work. Looking for reliable Elixir dev? That's me too!

Viewpoints are my own and not the viewpoints of my employer (that's also me).

melx··on Google Chrome just rolled out a new way to track you and serve ads
Let's take the toaster out of context here and then if that's just a "product" and the brands/governments want you to purchase it frequently that's why.
melx··on A design system for the federal government
It's called GDS Transport[0] and it's custom version of New Transport (for digital use) that's based on the original Transport font designed in the 1950s.

melx··on Show HN: Pgs.sh – A zero-dependency static site hosting service for hackers
I would say before you get a takedown request such platform is infested with malware and e.g. Google blocks the website so any attempt to visit it results in big red warning.

Speaking from experience, I had similar idea for hosting static sites albeit without the ssh model around it.

melx··on Ask HN: Is GitHub Down?
Time to finish the day anyway! (it's 5:36pm UK time).
melx··on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman First Person to Get Indonesian Golden Visa
It has cheap(er) resources to be able to employ lots of people to work on tuning a large LLM.

Hypothetically thinking only.

melx··on HuggingFace Training Cluster as a Service
You end up paying more in the latter instance.
melx··on Becoming a contractor
Ugh. Terrible tactics. Good thing I removed my email/phone from CV upon uploading it to them.
melx··on Becoming a contractor
I'm currently looking for contract work around Python/Elixir web-based projects (hire me anyone?), so I thought I will give TopTal a try after reading the article.

I put good effort into the application process - e.g. by ensuring my answers are exactly what they're looking for (the questions weren't technical so far). I then uploaded my up-to-date CV among other things they asked, and I selected my availability to "full time".... only to learn that I was put on some sort of waitlist - "[..] we encourage you to reapply after March 2, 2024."

I think I'll pass on TopTal. The could tell me way before I applied their network has reached its capacity (if?). Or is that he "long selection process" the OP refers to in the article?

melx··on Things I wish I knew before moving 50K lines of code to React Server Components
You forgot to also say Rust is faster.. if all languages were very similar there's not much point in having those.
melx··on Elixir saves Pinterest $2M a year in server costs
And? Comparing apples and oranges?

I'm running seven Elixir/Phoenix apps (one of these is umbrella with 12 apps) on shared CPU cheap VPS with 1gb memory. I actually ran out of disk space recently than anything else so far.

melx··on We put half a million files in one Git repository (2022)
You commit the sqlite dump file(?) to git and have the history...

I dunno but there are folks who would put anything in git. I work with someone who manages to exceed disk space of company's Gitlab instance by git adding everything. The disk is full again once a month.

melx··on I cycled to all the villages in alphabetical order
Especially when they specified a radius in km(!).
melx··on Unicorn – A full-stack web framework for Django
There's Hypercorn too.
melx··on Unicorn – A full-stack web framework for Django
That's the exact reason I mostly stopped developing using Django and decided to learn Elixir. I hate JS and try to use as little as possible on my projects, and LiveView is a god send. Also, the neat integration with Tailwind CSS is out of the box in Phoenix.
melx··on Why Python Is Terrible
"there are only two kinds of languages: the ones people complain about and the ones nobody uses".

melx··on HMRC (UK Tax Authority) Persuing Uber for £386M (~$487M) Vat
Having dealt with HMRC myself in topics from auth letters to paying vat every quarter... I'm not sure they exist*

* They probably do exist, as I got hold of someone on their helpline after 4 weeks of trying. That I got something else than I enquired about is another matter.

melx··on HMRC (UK Tax Authority) Persuing Uber for £386M (~$487M) Vat
in 2021[1] a Supreme Court ruled that their drivers are employees (and not self-employed people), so I suspect the invoice shall be coming from the company. Perhaps that's also why HMRC is pursuing the VAT for the past year or two.

melx··on Transparent field level encryption for Django with pgcrypto PostgreSQL extension
The company behind this project no longer exists.

I know as I worked there a decade ago :-)

It's OSS - send a PR for "recent version of Django", someone may even merge into upstream.

melx··on Elixir for Ruby developers: the three most important differences
Nothing personal but I hate blog posts without a date of publication of said post.

melx··on The Guide to Sleeping in Airports
Nothing beats Englishman being woken up at 4am by a group of elderly German tourists singing their favourite worship songs.

Apart from that airports are good for overnight stay.

melx··on Books on Starting a Profitable SaaS Business
Oh cheers! I read The Lean Startup and due to my leaky memory I remember nothing! But it's as you say: 200 pages to tell "iterate more often on product updates". Hell yeah.

This must be the biggest-paddings-between-blocks website ever. At least for mobile.
melx··on Functional Python Programming
Improved code readability. The pipe operator was a game changer for me even after 20 years of programming (I know I was probably touching wrong things).
melx··on Functional Python Programming
Readability isn't the best. Also what you present here is method chaining and not functional pipes.
melx··on Show HN: CodeZen – A simple CLI tool to ask LLM questions about your codebase
Yes but while adding files to .gitignore will not send these to AI using your tool, it will break a project that uses your tool. Hence the idea of a separate ignore file to git, but with similar behaviour to gitignore.
