melloclello··on Plan to Send Probes to the Nearest Star
This is what I was wondering. Thanks!
melloclello··on Plan to Send Probes to the Nearest Star
I thought that was a pretty choice line. Relax, I think we both know what Charlie actually means.

Doesn't the interstellar medium effectively turn into alpha radiation at significant percentages of the speed of light?

melloclello··on AI’s Language Problem
I can't say anything about the feasibility of what you describe, but something about the idea of being a being composed of pure text, no ability to perceive or visualise the world around me except through the medium of text, utterly horrifies me
melloclello··on The Daredevil Camera
What app is that, Artlav?
melloclello··on Alan Kay has agreed to do an AMA today
Hi Alan, what do you think of the Unison project? [1]

On the surface it's a structured editor for a type safe language in which it's impossible to write an invalid program, but the author has some pretty lofty goals for it.

melloclello··on The simple things I want in a text editor
All I want, in any text editor, is multiple cursors [1]. It's a really powerful concept that renders a large number of otherwise tedious operations tractable without having to resort to macros or other nonintuitive abstractions.

I feel like it's such a useful feature that it should be baked into your operating system's text field widgets from the ground up. It's intuitive enough, too, that regular users could probably grasp it.

[1] As per Sublime Text: http://www.sublimetext.com

While I'm here I'd like to gripe that while there is a third party Atom package which adds support for multiple cursors [2], it has a number of bugs in it which seem to be irresolvable due to some deep architectural issue with Atom. ARGH.

[2] Sublime-Style-Column-Selection is the only package that attempts to do it "properly": https://atom.io/packages/sublime-style-column-selection

melloclello··on Adulterated Swift
Isn't Apple working on a new UI framework, UXKit? One could idly speculate that it might be written in Swift...
melloclello··on Ask HN: How do you use Amazon Echo?
I think perhaps I would be more comfortable with a Star Wars droid style name like 'AZ', tbh
melloclello··on The Facebook Papers, Part 1: The great unbundling
If Facebook was a physical object, it would be cigarettes.
melloclello··on World's Obese Population Hits 641M
Lolz
melloclello··on World's Obese Population Hits 641M
Isn't obesity a uh good problem to have?
melloclello··on Xi editor: A modern editor with a backend written in Rust
Drag and drop's pretty neat I reckon. Pretty nice when things tie into the native APIs in OS X so you can even drag snippets of text between applications. Pretty sure people would have shat their pants when they first saw that working in NextStep - it's nice not to break it.
melloclello··on Xi editor: A modern editor with a backend written in Rust
I love GUIs. Oh dear god, sometimes I just want to click and highlight and drag things around.
melloclello··on Smart Kids Should Skip High School
I wish I had skipped high school. At best it was a waste of time and at worst it was a highly traumatic experience for me. I guess I'm doing better now but the first few years I spent in the real world were spent desperately trying to unlearn everything I'd learned from that experience.
melloclello··on Regarding JavaScript trailing commas
I would imagine any version control system attempting to solve this problem would focus very closely on one particular language or development system. Any pragmatic solution would also have to be a highly opinionated one.

For a related idea, see Facebook's Haskell system, in which only type-safe code is allowed to be checked into the respository:

melloclello··on Regarding JavaScript trailing commas
I would argue that the trailing comma diff issue is an artefact of the fact that diff works at the text level, not at the syntax level (I can only hope this might be a thing someday)
melloclello··on HCL: a color model that actually matches our perceptions (2011)
Man I have used this thing so many times, thank you
melloclello··on Coffee wars: South Korea's cafe boom nears saturation point
This is, at best, a severely autistic view of the world.
melloclello··on Swift 2.2 Released
Yeah, but all the panels remain white.
melloclello··on Swift 2.2 Released
I agree, Xcode is definitely the best looking IDE by light years. Now if only it had a dark mode...
melloclello··on Swift 2.2 Released
Generic typealiases are coming, thank goodness: http://ericasadun.com/2016/03/08/generic-typealiases-are-a-t...
melloclello··on Show HN: English syntax highlighter using part-of-speech tagging
I think this is kind of neat for structured English as opposed to prose. Prose tends to look like vegetable soup, but I pasted a very regularly phrased and structured todo list in here and it looks great. Things like the standard Agile "as a user, I want X so I can Y" formalised story descriptions just make sense with this kind of syntax highlighting.
melloclello··on Frameworks Don't Make Much Sense
> My particular bugbear is working with people who refuse to learn SQL as if it's some arcane bit of weirdness on a par with machine code. They've only ever used ORMs and have no idea how to actually talk to their data. /rant

Lol this is me. People who write their SQL from scratch confuse me, I'm like, just use the ORM and then everything's consistent! :P

melloclello··on CocoaPods downloads max out five GitHub server CPUs
That was the smuggest use of emoji I've seen in a while
melloclello··on What is “the stack”?
This is great - I'm self taught and have been working for years with no idea what the stack is - I'd love one for this "heap" thing I keep hearing about, as well.
melloclello··on Ghost in the Shell remains our most challenging film about technology
I always thought SAC was a little like Law and Order: SVU but with cyborgs
melloclello··on Windows Now Showing Full-Screen Ads
Have you considered: you don't really need to play video games anyway
melloclello··on AI generated music to improve focus, relaxation and sleep
Cannot stop listening to that Gas album. Also Ryuichi Sakamoto has a golden touch. See Loscil, Lawrence English, Nest for more of this kind of music
melloclello··on Creating a Computer Voice That People Like
I always liked the original, Klatt-based synthetic voices that actually sounded like vocoders. I would think we could avoid the uncanny valley by creating synthetic voices that deliberately sound like synthetic voices.
