melissamiranda··on How we're scammed into eating phony food
This is true and well documented on the website Truth in Olive Oil, run by Tom Mueller who also wrote a well respected book debunking olive oil production.

There's a great guide to buy olive oil on the site here: http://www.truthinoliveoil.com/great-oil/how-to-buy-great-ol...

Sigona's Market at Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, CA has an olive oil bar. They offer the best, pure varieties harvested from different regions around the world including California. California oils are harvested and pressed in the fall, so I think they become available in spring-summer. In the fall and winter you can get southern hemisphere oils that are fresher. Sigona's keeps the olive oil in barrels and only bottles at the last minute so it's as fresh as possible.

The Olive Press at Jacuzzi Vineyards in Sonoma is the one place I know that is pressing their own oil and you can bottle it right when it's freshest. http://www.jacuzziwines.com/theolivepress

I got these two places from the Truth in Olive Oil, so for others in US you should be able to check on the site to see what places near you have high quality olive oil.

Pregnancy doesn't really affect your ability to work (except for complications that require bedrest, and even then you work from home). A newborn does require care from the mother, but many women are able to return to work full time after 6 weeks (and some as early as 3 weeks). She'll probably be on leave for a few weeks after baby arrives, but I'm sure she'll be able to keep an eye on things even while she's gone (this is why the night nurse was invented).

A baby and a career are not mutually exclusive, I just wish people would stop assuming that they are.

melissamiranda··on 6 Numbers from Facebook Insights That Actually Matter
Thanks for making Fb Insights clear, it's a mess in there. You also have to be sure Facebook is reporting the right numbers in the first place.
melissamiranda··on Future of Mobile: a case of HTML5 or iOS… really?
Another point to consider is that you can rarely get away with building a native mobile app alone. Unless you create a beautiful utility that is a standalone experience, you'll want to be able to re-engage users via email and perhaps spread the word via Facebook or Twitter, and that requires that you have a regular website for people to land on, and perhaps interact with your app a little bit to increase the chances that they'll download it.
melissamiranda··on Justifying 1 Billion Dollars for Instagram
This is a highly plausible scenario for how the price could have gone from a more sensible $300M to $1B if Instagram said no to a sale and raised a round instead.

Ha. Craig would probably do this, and then say "Hold on" while he plunks down his book on Tokyo Art Galleries: http://craigmod.com/journal/kickstartup/

What can I say? The man is prolific.

melissamiranda··on How to thrive as a solo non-technical founder
The look book was awesome, it brought all the invitations on the site to life. You could curl up on a couch and flip through beautiful stationery at your own leisure. It made it a pleasure rather than a chore by simple getting it off the computer. Tracy, where were you when I got married? I was impressed that Tracy had to learn pdf scripting to pull it off, she learns just about anything, and fast.

Glad to finally know the story!

Are you guys the reason why they locked the 500 offices permanently (so you can only get in with a iPhone app)? Did Dave finally tire of all the ramdom dudes pitching him?

Hilarious. It's pretty good for short, witty puns.

I like your edit, well put.

What we found in opening up Tiny Review to other login options was actually pretty civil. We haven't seen much offensive content at all, nor spam. It might be that we're still small yet, but I think I agree with you. Letting people refine their identity for a particular site usually frees up their expression and you get good results. While you're small, it's not a problem. Once you scale enough to have a large userbase, you normally have the time and resources for content moderation.

Any company offering a free service has to make money somehow, and since they know 5% of internet browsing is on the Fb newsfeed, it's actually not surprising.

I wonder, would you pay a $5 subscription so that Facebook doesn't show you ads and lets you own your data? Someone else suggested it.

Thanks, point more than proven.
melissamiranda··on I would rather drink piss like Bear Grylls than log in with Facebook
True. The flip side is the ability to craft and re-craft your identity everywhere you go, which lets people misbehave because no one can figure out who they are. Abuse, profanity, hate are all easier if you wear a mask.

Thanks for the links. Seeing 1 from '07, one from '08, and one from last year, seems that it's been building up for 5 years. Yeah, I see your point.

Smarty pants. This is a good way to think ahead.

Open ID tried and failed. What I see now is more developers creating their own registration auth. Even if they lose on signup conversions vs. 1-click Fb or Twitter, they avoid duplicate account mixups.

melissamiranda··on I would rather drink piss like Bear Grylls than log in with Facebook
Interesting. Anyone else out there have a second Fb account just to login?
melissamiranda··on I would rather drink piss like Bear Grylls than log in with Facebook
Super interesting. I wonder what would happen if Facebook would implement a subscription service that shows no ads and lets you own and control your data. It's not a bad idea- I'll see if a friend at Fb will ask Zuckerberg if they've ever considered this.
melissamiranda··on I would rather drink piss like Bear Grylls than log in with Facebook
Thanks for sharing this. I had no idea people felt this strongly about their data. In user testing, I picked up that people are afraid of apps publishing to their walls, or worse, friends' walls behind their back. I got that people don't trust developers with their Facebook credentials because of the abuses in the past, but what you're saying is that you don't trust Facebook itself. Thank you - now I know this going forward.
melissamiranda··on I would rather drink piss like Bear Grylls than log in with Facebook
Just curious, why don't you trust Facebook? Did you trust them at one point in time? What made you lose your trust?

I'm a designer so it's interesting to me what's behind all the Facebook hate.

Spotify and Facebook partnership pre-dated the ticker and timeline. I don't think that at the time they decided to work together, they knew how or if Timeline/Ticker posting would be perceived as spam (Facebook didn't even know that). Probably just seemed like a good opportunity to partner with Facebook to increase visibility and virality during their US launch.
melissamiranda··on I would rather drink piss like Bear Grylls than log in with Facebook
Off base. Facebook login was implement to prevent a Chatroulette problem (nudity and profanity). The Internet Fuckwad theory: normal person + anonymity + audience = total fuckwad (http://www.quora.com/What-is-the-Greater-Internet-Fuckwad-Th...) explains why anonymity allows bad behavior.

The decision had nothing to do with laziness, and everything to do with encouraging real identity on the app.

melissamiranda··on 500 Startups Co TinyReview new iPhone app released
We had to start with Facebook because getting people to use their real identity deters bad behavior. We'll add Twitter login in a few weeks. We're setting up community management and moderation now.

It's fundamentally different than Instagram: the focus on on the words, picture is secondary. Instagram is all about a beautiful photo, and then maybe you'll read the comments. Because you don't need a good picture in the first place, Tiny Review lends itself to different situations.

melissamiranda··on Facebook buys Gowalla
Foursquare always had a better design. Hear me out: Design is about 2 things: how it looks and how it works. Gowalla always had a prettier coat of paint, pretty interactions. But what mattered more was the design of the game - becoming mayor on Foursquare was easier to grasp and get addicted to than dropping the original Gowalla teddy bears.

Coat of paint and nice UI doesn't always win.

I think the reasoning is that a link in a blog is better because it's one link with lots of text. Links on Twitter are links next to lots of links. Google doesn't value pages full of links as much as content with a few links. (It feels so backward)

By the same reasoning, Hacker News front page doesn't help you with page rank, but it's great for exposure.
