melesian··on Two years of teaching high school CS
A teacher should know the difference between disinterested and uninterested.
melesian··on The EU suppressed a 300-page study that found piracy doesn’t harm sales (2017)
Not publishing is not suppressing. The EU's reputation is that of the greatest regulator on the planet. It acts in the collective interest of EU citizens not the libertarian (or progressive) fantasies of American capitalists.
melesian··on LVMH becomes the first European company to surpass $500B in market value
A deeply foolish comment, completely ignoring the fact that the US has capital markets dwarfing those of all European countries, a single national language, and, so far, a tradition of sucking up talent from the rest of the world, including from Europe.

And... as any girl should have told you by now: size isn't everything. In Europe we prefer to buy locally produced food in local pedestrian districts to driving to giant Walmarts -- and so on across the board.

We'll happily trade 6 weeks annual leave, parental leave, socialized healthcare and many other things (freedom from school shootings, lower child mortality, longer life expectancy, vastly lower inequality etc etc) for your size-based bragging rights.

As for innovation: we're doing fine. The web originated in Europe and so did a lot else, including the world's largest and best regulated market, something Americans can only dream of:

Just read Moneyland and Butler to the World by Oliver Bullough. Nothing to do with the Blair era -- watch the The Spider's Web on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYfnkLurLA8
melesian··on Banshees of Inisherin: The Game
Imagine describing a metaphor for the American civil war as being about mental illness.

No connection at all with the common antecedent: British imperialism; slavery in America's case and a colonial legacy of partition imposed at gun point in Ireland's.

melesian··on Were the Irish Druids from the Lost Island of Atlantis?
Keystone University?

:-)))))

Why don't you check in with real univsersities in Ireland and see if they've ever heard of it. You'll get some laughs. Here's a list

https://www.iua.ie/ouruniversities/

This is not a university. It's a website on a par with Trump University.

melesian··on Antigua and Barbuda may vote to remove King Charles III as its head of state
You seem to have entirely airbrushed from history the loss of 1/3 of the UK's land area scarcely 100 years ago.
melesian··on Antigua and Barbuda may vote to remove King Charles III as its head of state
In Ireland we have an elected President whose duties are largely ceremonial (laying wreaths, giving speeches, meeting dignitaries incl newly appointed diplomats etc) but include one v important constitutional duty: to sign legislation into law. It has happened that a President refused to sign without first referring controversial legislation to the Supreme Court.

In the UK the Crown has nominally comparable authority but is in fact nothing but a glove puppet, or at least that has been the case to date. See e.g., the Queen's acquiescence to the illegal prorogation of parliament. She did was she was told to do in her own name. Her son may not be so accommodating and this may lead to a constitutional crisis.

Some check on an overweening executive is always good.

melesian··on Linux 5.19
My experience, also using T and X series laptops matches yours. Some issues with resuming from sleep a long time ago and with firmware on a docking station once but otherwise only one gripe: I've never been entirely happy with the fan control. I found in the end with my T440s that leaving it to the OS worked well enough. Previously, with older X series machines, I had to both try to optimize and also ended up replacing fans.
melesian··on China is using mythology and sci-fi to sell its space program to the world
> China is playing the long game of soft power by providing this information and pushing their world view.

Change China to the USA to see the absurdity of this.

melesian··on XiangShan open-source 64-bit RISC-V processor to rival Arm Cortex-A76
The number of English speakers (in correct English).

Amount is for uncountable nouns, like butter, sugar etc.

melesian··on Brickit scans your pile of legos and shows you what you can make
The plural of lego is lego. Except in America apparently.
melesian··on Mystery as 5k homing pigeons vanish
I have only ever heard that expression in the US (most frequently in NYC), never in Europe, where pigeon keeping and racing is still popular. See https://www.daviddegner.com/photography/fancy-pigeons/ (cited here) for further evidence.

We all know what Americans did to the Passenger Pigeon. A lot more than 5k vanished.

melesian··on Update on Windows 11 minimum system requirements
I boycotted Windows 10 over Microsoft's unethical "upgrade" conduct with Windows 7 (I switched to Linux Mint and have never regretted it). However, on the day Windows 11 was announced I had to reinstall Windows 10 on a 2nd hand PC I bought (to upgrade a Garmin satnav) and I have to say my reaction on re-acquaintance was visceral dislike.

From being forced to have a Microsoft account to being automatically logged in to Skype -- which I last used over 10 years ago and have no desire ever to use again -- to the horrible rotating tiles UI, the whole thing was creepy.

I chuckled on reading about Windows 11 running Android apps. Android is like Windows 7 to me--the end of the line.

The Raspberry Pi V may soon be enough hardware to run enough OS for most people for most purposes.

I'm relieved to be free of Microsoft's treadmill and keen to get off Google's. Nothing I've read about Windows 11 inclines me in the slightest to consider going back to Windows. Seems I'll be switching more people to Linux Mint (friends and family switched already v happy with it).

melesian··on Irish police to be given powers over passwords
Ireland is not a British isle. Irish police are unarmed and the country is not a surveillance state. However, there have been some high profile cases of murders committed by drug gangs who have used encrypted phones to put their communications beyond scrutiny / use in evidence. Ireland is a democracy and the public is perfectly able and willing to change govt if it sees fit (and it does so regularly). I think you'll find that in Ireland the people wonder WTF is wrong with the US that it could elect a cretin like Donald Trump to its highest office, denies healthcare to its citizens, tolerates vote suppression, electoral gerrymandering, mass shootings, endless racially motivated police assassinations, unlimited corporate expenditure in political campaigns etc. Ireland is fully signed up to the EU's GDPR which puts citizen's data rights on a far firmer footing than those of Americans.
melesian··on French set to replace English as EU’s ‘working language’
I doubt it's as low as that!

Malta and the Netherlands are other countries where a large majority also speak English.

In some places in the EU the UK's union jack flag is being replaced with the Irish tricolour on bank ATM's display of language choices, which amuses the Irish.

melesian··on Fastmail accounts blocked in Russia, here's what we know
I've had my Fastmail account for over 20 years. It's an employee-owned company with first class ethics and a first class service. An absolute beacon of integrity. It's too bad these qualities aren't more in demand. Make sure you use a Yubikey. An honourable service provider isn't enough.
melesian··on G7: Rich nations back deal to tax multinationals
Evidently you know little or nothing about the EU. Taxation by member states of the EU is a sovereign national competence and the Irish have both a veto over change and a likely requirement to hold a national referendum over any change.

If you do some research you'll find that there is zero evidence of any EU countries shifting profits to Ireland. Almost all of the profit shifting which Ireland is blamed for facilitating is undertaken by a handful of US MNCs enriching their shareholders at the expense of US taxpayers via mechanisms enabled first and foremost by the US govt
